This isn't an unpaid debt, it's an illegal campaign contribution by city officials at their taxpayer's expense.

Every single one of them knew they would be providing free city services for Trump while charging the Biden then Harris campaign for the same.

The city can’t tell the Van Andel Arena they aren’t allowed to let Trump come in. And I’m sure they’re essentially obligated to provide a police presence and whatever else they’re charging his campaign for.

The city of Grand Rapids is pretty blue, and its government isn’t conservative. Huge swaths of West Michigan are conservative, and sure there are far more churches in GR than in most cities (it’s the central location for a few flavors of Reformed churches), but still. The city government aren’t exactly Trump supporters.

Cities can refuse to provide services to venues who refuse to pay for them in most places. The city officials in every city that Trump screwed should have been demanding payment up front - they knew he routinely screws over everyone he deals with because he still has debts from 2016 that are unpaid. Those who haven't been paid should have been making front page news by suing for what they are owed.

47% of the people in Kent County voted for the felon. Even if the Grand Rapids numbers are lower, it's not reasonable to suggest a significant percentage of those making city decisions aren't Trump supporters.

This just in: lying cheating cheap piece of literal human garbage does an awful thing that he has a demonstrated history of doing several times in recent history.

Water is wet news at 11. Trump doesn't pay his bills Grand Rapids was dumb to allow him to rally there.

[-] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 45 points 2 days ago

When a city holds a Trump rally and then he doesn't pay, that is the city government misappropriating tax revenue and directing it to their preferred candidate. It is not the city residents being dumb, it is the city government being corrupt.

[-] tabarnaski@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

And it's surely the way Trump himself understands this. As we learned today, he keeps tabs on who's on his side like the Mafia boss he is. The cities that dare ask him payment will be punished when he gets the occasion.

Grand Rapids isn’t a conservative city government. A lot of the surrounding area is, but GR itself isn’t. We just have the biggest arena around, so all the MAGAts come from all over West Michigan.

The city can’t stop him from campaigning here, they can’t go to the Van Andel arena and say, “No, you aren’t allowed to let Trump in.” They can just charge his campaign for any services provided, and then get shafted when he doesn’t pay.

Grand Rapids isn’t a conservative city government.

So can you explain why they aren't trying to take Trump to court over unpaid fees? Also, why couldn't they could have demanded an upfront payment? Go to the arena and say "he has to pay first or he isn't allowed in"

[-] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

He may have paid the arena upfront, or they got points on sales. The costs to the city are TBD until after the event. The arena booked him, city couldn't really say no.

I guess they could have tried to get him to hold some money in escrow, like they overcharge your credit card at a hotel to later refund part of it, but I've never heard of this model in this situation.

And take Trump to court? Yeah that's working out great. One woman he raped won and nobody is allowed to say he raped her now. Fantastic record there.

[-] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 35 points 2 days ago

Its so wierd the way if I don't pay bills I get into trouble but if trump doesn't he does not. Its almost like system is not treating everyone the same. Remind me again. All the school shooters got charged with terrorism yeah?

[-] tabarnaski@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 days ago

This is what happens when your government is transitioning from a democracy to a crime syndicate power structure. Corruption and privilege infiltrating all aspects of society at an accelerating rate.

cf. Russia in the 90s

[-] WatDabney@fedia.io 22 points 2 days ago

Are there actually people who didn't already know rhat Trump doesn't pay bills?

[-] mercphilby@discuss.online 3 points 1 day ago

Trump can’t afford 49k

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 14 points 2 days ago

Add it to the pile

[-] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 13 points 2 days ago

He also owes Albuquerque $500k

[-] Snowclone@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

If you don't wait for the check to clear in advance, you will never get money out of Trump.

[-] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

lol. MAGA, bitches. Or something.

[-] irotsoma@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Anyone who provides services to Trump prior to payment is stupid. If credit scores applied to people born wealthy, his would be 0. And they won't even go that low.

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 8 points 2 days ago

This is why you require 100% upfront payments with Trump.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

There's a very narrow range of people smart enough to do that, but dumb enough to do business with him at all.
