A 1967 law bans civilians from carrying guns on Capitol Hill, even if they have concealed carry licenses. But the law carves out an exception for lawmakers, who can keep firearms in their offices.

They apparently don't trust the little people.

Is it gauche to refer to the US constitution's amendments as a solution?

I mean the 14th. "No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress [...] , shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof" should remove a lot of them from office after the last coup.

Considering how often the U.S. Constitution is violated, at this point it should probably be viewed more as a suggestion than a solution.
