Summary

President Biden became the first sitting U.S. president to visit the Amazon rainforest, emphasizing the global urgency of combating climate change.

During his historic visit, he called protecting the environment “a fight for humanity, citing achievements such as rejoining the Paris Agreement, boosting climate financing to $11 billion annually, and advancing green energy through the Inflation Reduction Act

He announced new conservation efforts, including $50 million for the Amazon Fund, and declared Nov. 17 as International Conservation Day.

Biden urged leaders to prioritize both environmental protection and economic growth, leaving a climate-focused legacy amid concerns over President-elect Trump’s rollback plans.

This was so important to me that I decided to only do it a month before I'm leaving.

[-] Gointhefridge@lemm.ee 43 points 5 hours ago

Oh NOW history is watching! Hasn’t been watching for the last 4 years at all it seems but I guess history took a little break.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 81 points 7 hours ago

History will not judge him kindly. He oversaw a hiatus on his country's march to fascism but ultimately chose upholding the status quo over real change that would actually have stopped it

I’m not convinced that history will care given that we are headed towards extinction.

[-] Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 hours ago

If Earth is lucky. We’re unfortunately a very hardy species.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 14 points 6 hours ago

Nah, there will be a few million humans that eek out survival on the tropical Antarctic archipelago.

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 13 points 5 hours ago

Who will go to form a new civilization and have absolutely no clue as to who the hell we were because we so creatively and ignorantly destroyed everything about ourselves.

And those descendents will probably go on to just repeat all the mistakes we're making now.

[-] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 hours ago

Gonna be hard for them to repeat the exact mistakes now that we've blown through all the easy to access coal and oil. It might not be possible to get industrialization off the ground a second time

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 hours ago

England basically deforested their entire island to burn wood before the industrial revolution. Without easy to access coal or oil, I imagine those future generations will burn all the trees everywhere to maintain their development.

[-] UsernameHere@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

What status quo are you saying he chose to uphold?

[-] Fuzzy_Dunlop@lemm.ee 8 points 7 hours ago

I hope all those "vote blue no matter who" people are proud. It's such a relief that Biden brought a stop to Trump and turned the country around.

[-] cm0002@lemmy.world 1 points 18 minutes ago

Well if people had done that instead of whining about "bLueMaGa" we wouldn't be dealing with an upcoming Drump presidency.

In all likelihood, with yet another loss, MAGA would have fallen apart and Trump would be a fading memory rn.

But no, now there's a chance voting either won't exist or won't matter in 4 years and we'll have to hear about el orango damn near everyday. Good job.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 28 points 6 hours ago

I guess you're one of those people who think that once Trump has destroyed Western civilization, socialism will somehow magically emerge from the ashes. But that's not how these things work.

[-] cm0002@lemmy.world 1 points 15 minutes ago

socialism will somehow magically emerge from the ashes. But that's not how these things work.

I mean, it kinda does, the problem is that's probably the most difficult, painful, blood-filled path to it

[-] burgersc12@mander.xyz 45 points 7 hours ago

They're watching us do nothing when the planet burns. Wonder what they think of us, probably something like this

[-] xenomor@lemmy.world 31 points 7 hours ago

Yup, history is watching us completely drop the ball here. History is watching Joe Biden fail to rise to the occasion of addressing the onslaught of US fascism. The environment, peace, wealth, and our very freedoms are now in dire peril.

[-] UsernameHere@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

How did he fail to rise to the occasion?

[-] DBT@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

This is a fair question. The people voted for fascism. What’s he supposed to do, stage a coup to try and overturn the election results?

He wanted to, and thought he could rise to the occasion but old age got to him.

[-] UsernameHere@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

Right, almost any legislation he tried to pass was blocked by Congress because of Manchin and Sinema.

If we blame/punish politicians for trying then why would they keep trying?

[-] Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago

Oh you naive summer child.

[-] UsernameHere@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

Your non answer is telling

[-] Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 27 minutes ago* (last edited 25 minutes ago)

Biden fit nicely into the status quo Democrat role, which was never going to help anything against the Republican fucks who give more shits about their power than serving the country. Do let me know if I need to spell out any other obvious realities to you - and your daft upvoters.

[-] octopus_ink@lemmy.ml 27 points 7 hours ago

Is history watching how we handle Gaza and Israel too?

[-] whithom@discuss.online 4 points 4 hours ago

It’s watching how china handles Muslims too. Pretty poorly.

[-] ShittyBeatlesFCPres@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

History is gonna binge watch it later.

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

History is waiting for the discounted used DVD release

[-] metaStatic@kbin.earth 2 points 2 hours ago

Physical media is the only true way to appreciate these crimes against humanity. I hear they've censored the streaming version.

[-] metaStatic@kbin.earth 2 points 5 hours ago

I'm waiting for the 2nd half of the season to drop

[-] KingJalopy@lemm.ee 2 points 2 hours ago

Oh it'll drop

[-] SnotFlickerman 9 points 7 hours ago

Fuck you too, Joe.
