I’ve been laid off 3 times since 2018. The first time was from my job of 6 years that I was pretty set in making my career. I was making money, I was getting promotions, it was looking like I’d have a nice long tenure there. Then came the corporate restructuring.

I got into a really weak job after a few months of unemployment cause the job market was rough. It gave me flexibility but the job itself was low pay and low responsibility.

Then Covid came and I got laid off again. Company stopped doing business in that field.

Found ANOTHER company that was similar but paid better and kept my flexibility. Was good for about 4 years then came corporate restructuring.

Now I’m back at the business from 2018 but under a new product lineup.

Point of all this is: I learned a valuable lesson in having less “successful” work. I learned how to actually value my time and the people who I provide for. At my career gig, I put in so many hours and really pushed myself, in the jobs after, I’ve been able to put my mental health first and take care of my family better. Sure it’s less money, but it’s more attention.

Money isn’t what kids need, they need you to be there for them first and foremost. Money just makes it easier to do things.

Good luck, and I hope your situation gets better.

I love the double standard. Trump can say "arrest all the radical left" and "LOCK HER UP" but if a democrat grows a backbone and says it back it's "THEY'RE BEING MEAN!!! YOU CAN'T SAY THAT!"

We can't even figure out how to not have half our society be rasict, how the hell are we gonna save a whole planet from our fuckery?

Easy: they like money. The entire ideology behind Trump is "he's rich and I can be rich like him too!" All the VC guys know they can manipulate him with very little money (for them) and get to keep/make more for themselves. He's only a true friend to the wealthy.

I received a notification last night that someone changed my shipping address on Macys.com and when I visited the website, there was an open order for a PS5 with delivery to a NJ address.

After logging into Macy's I got 43 emails at once to seven different services like "Excalidraw" and "Sportograf" trying to login using a magic link.

At this point was was pretty nervous so I checked my main email security. Sure enough, there have been repeated login attempts under my account going on every few minutes for weeks.

I also saw there was an attempted login to my cellphone or home internet company.

I use 2FA, authenticators, etc. Basically what else should I be doing? Is there any way to be more preventative? I really don't wanna chuck this email but it is possible that may be the safest recourse. I do use this email for almost 300 different accounts to various things though.

8/23 update

So I received this suspicious email as a “note to self” from Microsoft in my junk folder. It says it’s from my address but additionally says it’s an “unverified server.” I am leery of it being legit but it is oddly timed.

I’ve added the opening text of the email: “Hello pervert, I've sent this message from your Microsoft account.

I want to inform you about a very bad situation for you.

However, you can benefit from it, if you will act wisely.

Have you heard of Pegasus? This is a spyware program that installs on computers and smartphones and allows hackers to monitor the activity of device owners. It provides access to your webcam, messengers, emails, call records, etc. It works well on Android, iOS, macOS and Windows. I guess, you already figured out where I'm getting at.”

I’ve received these emails in the past and nothing, but I figure it bears mentioning here cause I was legitimately in a less than secure situation a few days ago.

I would love to see a visual representation of where US tax dollars are going based on address. Especially if it has pretty charts.

I used up play a ton of Doom mods years ago and a lot of the TCs were fun but lacked substance beyond the surface. Some of the new ones are cool but overly complex. (The Sonic cart game has an hour long tutorial before you start). I was a big fan of Simon’s Destiny, the Castlevania mod for Doom.

Basically I’m looking to see suggestions for free games or total conversions that are worth playing. Before I go spending money onSteam releases, I wanna check out what I might have missed the last few years.

I feel like that’s the point of using that picture though.

When I was kid, I could sit in front of TV for hours and sink a day or two away into a game and have no problem having to start the game over from the beginning. Time meant nothing to me and I wasted it like it was a near infinite resource.

Now I am a parent and ain't got time for some of the nonsense that's in games nowadays. I'm lucky if I have even an hour to play each night.

A good example: Forza Horizon 5 allows you to switch cars mid game without traveling back to a house. That to me is a huge time saver compared to the recent NFS games.

Contrarily, Forza Motorsport (2023) makes you do qualifications every round. While realistic, a big time sink.

That said, what are some of your favorite games that have respect for your limited time?

Also because there is less content its more meaningful. There's a lot of fluff and garbage on Reddit just so people can get karma.

I'm coming across this post after reading an article about how Netflix is bathing in money and now making their options worse for customers, how the most wheel of a Boeing 757 fell off, and a how a country has been so free of criticism for decades that they're able to commit genocide for over 3 months.

I'm having a hard time seeing hope in our future. Every company operates solely to extract as much profit as humanly possible (and not as Artificialally Intelligently as possible) without considering for a single moment how a decision they make may effect their relationship with customers or the quality of their product. I know companies are in it to make money, but they used to at least correct decisions in the face of public outcry. (Hell Microsoft did an about face on Xbox One features in 2013 after public outcry)

But things seem different now. Since the pandemic and the overall regard for human life went up, companies almost feel vindictive and emboldened to do even more to fuck customers over. Its almost like they're holding a grudge over consumers for considering anything in life over their spending habits from March 2020 - September 2021. After all, the biggest push to "return to normal" was to get the economy back on track. I'll never forget some asshole on a fox news segment saying "We gotta return to normal people. Yes some people will die, but grandma would sacrifice herself for the economy." That's when I lost all hope of things getting better.

We've had the chance many times to change the way we act as a species and potentially make the world better, but somehow we always fail to do so. We're just fucked.

This used to be true, but unfortunately, like USB-C the game has changed completely.

The downside to standardization is that if you keep the same physical form for multiple iterations, the internals can change. The specs of the source and receiving ends have gone through tons of changes since 2015 and old HDMI 1.4 Cables don't have the same standards to transmit high speed signals from things like PS5, Xbox, Apple TV etc.

Additionally because they require programming and HDCP (a verification handshake between the 2 devices it connects) when companies cheap out they may not properly program them.

That being said, you don't need spend an arm and a leg, but don't get shit either. Generally speaking, buy the cheapest version HDMI 2.1 from a reputable brand or vendor. Definitely not from Amazon anymore, a TON of products labeled 2.1 are actually 2.0 or worse, 1.4.

Man, capitalists will do literally anything to not pay people more money. You know people steal cause shit is expensive and they don't have a lot of disposable income to waste on stuff right? Why inconvenience everyone. Pay people more and hire more workers.

Also cause the propaganda to get people to "want" stuff is so effective they start stealing just to have it.

Great article. It's pretty obvious to me now that the Fediverse should have room to grow on it's own naturally. It's probably in the best interest to block any massive corporate entity from joining in and swallowing it whole.

It's interesting seeing how fast it's already growing due to mega corporate incompetence, and I think the sheer desire to escape that landscape is driving growth now and we should nurture that as long as possible.
