The Blu Ray player is literally the only reason I use my PS5.

This is why I just bought a HTPC. And I run Linux on it. I can also play games and use it as media center/youtube/etc. No Playstation needed.
i tried this using PC as media center but my teevee remote did not work with it like it does with PS.
what are you using to control the HTPC? mouse and keyboard?
I use a very portable touchpad + keyboard combo device via Bluetooth, a very compact version. Great question btw. See attachment image. That is the I used in the past.
You also have other products like the Logitech K400 Plus Touchpad Keyboard. Or even a steam controller if you want to lol. It's up to you at the end.
However, I hate track pads. So I recently moved to a trackball! Much better. I advice to use a trackball as well (not for gaming).

That is also possible, but I like to keep my wireless keyboard always near me around the couch. So I don't need my phone. And connect via wifi or Bluetooth blabla.. Also typing on one of the above full-sized keyboards are sooo much better than a touch screen.

I remember being able to stream my media library from my pc to my Xbox 360 in 2007. Still can't do shit like that on Playstation in 2024. They couldn't even be bothered to give us themes for 2 gen's or folders for a long time.

Other than the damned BluRay/DVD controls. Even IF you have the dedicated remote there is still a ton of basic functionality it is lacking.
Yea I agree, also the stick drift issues and raising the prices of controllers. I wanted a ps5 for when gta6 came out, but with these prices, sticking with PC and waiting for the pc release.
A $379 PELADN HA-4 mini PC has 16GB DDR5 RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD a Ryzen 7 7840HS that easily beats a PS5 (it ties even a i9 11900K desktop in CPU benchmarks).
The APU on that thing runs most games on medium settings (like a PS5) at 60fps and the latest games as well as a non pro PS5. It's a lot faster than a steam deck.
Who on earth needs a console for twice the price that performs worse or slightly better? If you are a tinkerer you can even upgrade that thing with an eGPU.
Radeon 780M with fast DDR5 and 8 core unlocked 5.1GHz CPU only has problems maintaining 30fps in Black Myth Wukong.
It runs circles around the non Pro PS5 in everything else. I wonder how the chinese did get it that cheap. I got one and almost can't believe the value of that thing... The metal box is decent and temps are great. All that copper makes that thing quite heavy though.
800€ in Europe, that's a hard NO. Plus devs will still target the PS5 for optimising their games. This release was completely unnecessary.
The only reason why it exists is perhaps to try to normalise the higher prices for the PS 6.
That’s what I thought too. They test the waters for a much higher price point. I’m not buying it, if they price the PS6 above 500€ with a disc drive I say goodbye to console gaming.
Almost double the price for a bit nicer raytracing, 2TB and higher framerates in the very few games that don’t support at least 60fps is a very hefty asking price.
For 900€ you can get a pretty good gaming PC. If you buy some parts used, you can even get a really good rig for that price. You might just need to wait a few years until the latest sony exclusives make it to PC eventually.
I never thought the PS5 was underpowered. This is kind of a product without a need.
The point in their presentation was having graphics modes be an immovable 60FPS instead of 30FPS. Presumably, every game with a performance mode (that was previously 60FPS) will now run at 120FPS. That's effectively just doubling everything. It's certainly not a bad product, but it isn't for everyone.
I think lots of games would hit a cpu bottleneck before they reach 120 fps

The funniest part is my PS5 is collecting dust as it is. Played DeS remake, Ghost of Tsushima, and a Full Metal Panic PS4 game and haven't touched it since.
Oh, I played Silent Hill The Short Message, but that was so cringe I wish I hadn't played it at all. Soundtrack and monster design was good at least, but boy was the writing bad.
My PS4 last gen collected dust majority of the year and that had a way stronger library of actual exclusives games released for the system that weren't remasters. So PS5 and it's current library of exclusives ignoring that they get released to the PC has been sad. Not been an impressive generation.
Not even close. The PS3 launch price (For the base model mind you, not even a pro model) adjusted for inflation would be over $900 today.
That is a ridiculous price for a games console.

I see a lot of outrage about the price. But really, what's the alternative? Inflation has been nuts and most things are up. GPU alone would cost more than the console, if you're building a pc.
I will say though, no disc drive is a real shit move. Just a few years ago it was like, "here's the price, and here's the price if you don't want a disk drive." Now it's the opposite and that part is definitely annoying.
The alternatives is getting a PS4 and playing 98% of the PS5 games at 70-90% of the visual quality and 100% of the gameplay, plus all the PS4 games the PS5 doesn't have.
Or just get a switch. You should already have a PC you can cheaply upgrade.
Your comment is more a reflection on the choice of console rather than discussing the price. Pc upgrades are not always that cheap, either.
This. I never got a PS5 and it hasn’t impacted me at almost at all. Everything I’ve wanted to play has also come out of PS4 and plays just fine.

There's not many models that expensive. A comparable GPU to the PS5 Pro's is around half the cost
"comparable gpu" is kinda loaded. I have a pc and a ps5, so I'm not trying to take sides. What gpu are you getting for 350 usd that games at the fps, quality, and resolution that the ps5 does?
I was thinking between 7600 XT and 7700 XT or 4060 and 4060 TI.
7700XT and 4060ti aren't retailing for 350USD and you're not getting 4k 60fps at the fidelity the PS5 pro is doing.
The consoles are typically FSR2 upscaling from 1440p or lower. Plenty of games are down around 720p. Lets not pretend theyre doing 4k native on AAA titles. The pro isnt going to be native either, we need to see games and PSSR in action to see where it falls vs FSR, XESS, DLSS, and see what gpu is closest in performance. You can get a used RTX 3080 for 350-400 and i'll be pleasantly surprised if PS5 Pro beats that level of performance.
Let's suppose you are right for a moment, can the $350 buy a case, power supply, motherboard, CPU, RAM, hard disk that is on par with the PS5? GPU is only half the equation.

You're not wrong. It's far more powerful than any PC you can build for the same price. Everyone likes to complain on this platform, maybe more so than Reddit. Anything a company does to make money is down voted and called unreasonable.
