Congress gave Netanyahu 58 standing ovations in his 53 minute speech; more than one per minute. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LI8lTG7ht4

[-] dessalines@lemmy.ml 52 points 3 months ago

Apparently according to recent polls, over 70% of the US population wants a cease-fire in gaza. Considering less than a handful of congress-members agreed with them, that makes 99% of the US congress opposing the will of the people. Very democratic country, yes.

[-] pingveno@lemmy.ml 12 points 3 months ago

According to one recent poll, the number is 67%, and they didn't poll for a range of definitions of ceasefire to try to suss out exactly what that means. Like, many people would only accept a ceasefire that would more or less erase Hamas, but there is no sign of that happening. Instead, everything (including somewhat agree) was just lumped together to produce 67%.

I've seen elsewhere (I'll try to find the source but I've got a busy day ahead of me so it may be in a day or two) that like the Oscars, Congress was filling empty seats with people to give the illusion that it was widely supported.

Jeb Bush's wet dream

[-] PanArab@lemm.ee 41 points 3 months ago

Braver than the troops.

She is brave, period. There is a crackdown and violence towards anyone who dares protest the war crimes in Gaza, or even post against it on social media.

She is also in a super minority of 2% of Israelis who oppose the genocide.

[-] jsomae@lemmy.ml 10 points 3 months ago

Is it really as low as 2%?

[-] PanArab@lemm.ee 19 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Unless people are afraid to speak up, that’s what the polls say.

Pew Research has it at 4%

Israeli Arabs * ~~-[sic]-~~ are much more likely than Jews to say the country’s military response has gone too far (74% vs. 4%).

https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2024/05/30/israeli-views-of-the-israel-hamas-war/

* the term Israeli Arab is rejected by the majority of Palestinians living within the Green Line. The term purposefully erases Palestinian identity.

[-] jsomae@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Thank you for the citation. 4% is still incredibly low. After 9/11, more than 40% of Americans were against invading iraq. I am really surprised, but I could believe it. I didn't realize how polarised it was.

BTW your usage of [sic] here is astonishing. The asterisk alone would have sufficed. [sic] is for contexts where the reader might reasonably assume you made a transcription error when quoting them, not for errors in general.

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

as the other person said, there's threats to those who protest, but also decades of propaganda in schools dehumanizing Palestinians brainwash people from childhood to think this is normal and just.

[-] Omniraptor@lemm.ee 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

They're a very militarized society and have been surrounded by hostile governments and at war with "terrorists" basically since the state was founded. It's definitely not america mentality wise.

But additionally in recent years the propaganda has been exaggerated as a way to hold on to power, a favorite technique of the current government. I've been reading a book called "the netanyahu years" (it's on libgen) and it goes into some detail on his personal background and how he perfected these techniques.

[-] communism@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 months ago

Also not all "Israeli Arabs" are Palestinian. There are Arab Jews and there are Palestinian citizens of Israel who do not get treated the same at all.

[-] PanArab@lemm.ee 5 points 3 months ago

All Jews in Israel including those of an Arab background are included under Israeli Jews. Itamar Ben Gvier is an Iraqi Jew and he is the most anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab politician in Israel. Israeli Arabs means one thing only and that’s Palestinians with Israeli citizenship.

[-] communism@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 months ago

I would dispute that categorisation because that suggests that oppression of the Palestinians is because they are "Arab" rather than because they are the native Palestinian people. It's a Zionist obfuscation I've heard Palestinians oppose because it means non-Palestinian Arabs end up speaking on behalf of Palestinians. The Palestinians I've met are quite clear on a distinction between Arab people as a race and Palestinian people as a national identity. Not to mention there are Afro-Palestinians and quite white-looking Palestinians who arguably wouldn't normally be counted as Arab due to their race.

[-] PanArab@lemm.ee 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Zionists deny the existence of Palestinians. Zionists see Palestinians as generic Arabs with no history or attachment to Palestine. Zionists don’t see the Palestinians as indigenous.

The statements above aren’t what I think. Aren’t true either. They are what Zionists think. That’s why Palestinians are denied by the Israeli government and labeled Israeli Arabs.

White Palestinians, Afro Palestinians, etc… are all considered Israeli Arabs if they have Israeli citizenship. Arabs come in all shades across the Arab World and not just in Palestine.

The people who are downvoting this have no idea what they are talking about or what’s going on. It is wild but this is par the course with “Internet experts”. I am not wasting my time with people who can’t read and who don’t know the history of Zionism and Palestinian identity.

[-] dessalines@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 months ago

4 of your downvotes were from new, zero content accounts.

[-] PanArab@lemm.ee 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I wonder if it is Act-IL or another Zionist troll group.

[-] dessalines@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 months ago

It's possible, but there's no way of knowing unfortunately. There's also all those US PACs that are hard to keep track of, like correct the record, american bridge 21st century, and a bunch of republican ones too all devoted to defending the zionist agenda in social media spaces.

[-] PanArab@lemm.ee 4 points 3 months ago

They manipulate the web and then accuse us of being Russian or Chinese bots.

This one says 19% rather than 4%, which I'm much more inclined to believe.

[-] Railcar8095@lemm.ee 7 points 3 months ago

She is brave, period

A poor choice of words

[-] Serinus@lemmy.world 18 points 3 months ago

Okay, but if you're in Israel, why are you pointing the finger at the US?

[-] 3ntranced@lemmy.world 55 points 3 months ago

Cause we're the open wallet dumping cash into their munitions supply chain.

[-] Serinus@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

Seems like there's a cause closer to home.

[-] EisFrei@lemmy.world 18 points 3 months ago

I don't get this either or mentality.

It's possible to improve the status quo by doing multiple things.

When a curtain in your home catches fire, you don't go "I've already called the fire brigade, why should I bother getting the fire extinguisher in the hallway?"

[-] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Ahhh, guess they just shouldn't bother then. Right?

[-] Kashmir@midwest.social 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

The same way were dumping cash into the Taliban to fight the Russians. Yeah, that won't backfire someday.

[-] PanArab@lemm.ee 9 points 3 months ago

Israel does not control the US. The reality is the other way around, the US uses Israel to do the dirty work that would be too unpalatable for US voters, despite the theater.

[-] Serinus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

That makes sense. It's the US that has interest in Palestinian land, not Israel.

[-] 3ntranced@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Not so much interest in the land - no oil or natural gas- more so in pushing the "everything not governed by us is a shithole-watch us bomb it to submission" bootlicker mentality.

I'm all for anti-terrorism, but the longer a foreign entity is on their land, the more terrorists it ends up creating.

[-] Serinus@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

"us"? Who is bombing?

I do think the US could handle the situation a little better. We can protect Israel from Iran and company without directly providing them bombs for Gaza while still getting everything the US wants.

But the primary blame here absolutely lies with Israel. Bibi is making the decisions.

[-] 3ntranced@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

The thing is, when were talking "providing munitions and bombs" this is not like a US Senetor signing an invoice form. These deals are handled by private defense contractors who essentially are war stock brokers who either hop on government requisition contracts or middleman the logistics of shipping.

The "government's" only actual input is posting the RFIs and signing off on the contractors involvement. And these contractors are literally anyone. You and I could start a LLC right now and because of FAR requirements (laws that give small buisnesses advantage on some contracts) start bidding on these contracts with no prior experience whatsoever.

Bibi is on the consumer end of the deals so I don't doubt he has near full involvement. But the reason the US is to blame, is they allow the open market trade of Warfare.

[-] ImpressiveEssay@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago

I'm here defense...this is definitely how more and more of the world is seeing the states...

[-] UntitledQuitting@reddthat.com 10 points 3 months ago

Israeli’s against Israel

[-] Prandom_returns@lemm.ee 9 points 3 months ago

This is a cool way to protest.

Spraying "HAMAS is comin" wasn't.

[-] fox2263@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

Sorry, congress did what??

[-] Crikeste@lemm.ee 10 points 3 months ago

They gave Netanyahu a standing ovation. 58 times. In one hour.

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

to be fair, some people just love genocide.
