I did put in the time to voice train and can no longer do a masc voice. I malefailed before starting estrogen because I voice trained first, so you are correct about voice making a huge difference. However, I've reached the point where I couldn't pass as a dude even if I kept my mouth shut

Do you have any particular resources for voice training that you’d recommend? I feel like I need to find a teacher, but I can only imagine that would be pretty expensive

There are various YouTubers who have good videos on all the techniques you'll need to do a femme voice. YukkoEX and Trans Voice Lessons have some good videos, but I've also learned a lot from one off videos by creators explaining how they personally learned. There are a lot of different approaches, so if you watch a wide variety you're bound to find some wisdom that makes it click for you.

However, the biggest factor that no amount of professional coaches can help with is practice. Just like with learning to play an instrument, you need to regularly put in time. Whether that looks like practicing at a set time every day for months on end, or going full time as soon as you understand the technique, you need to be consistent. This is what I believe trips most people up, and it's what I struggled with for a long time as well.

More on what worked for me:I was able to learn by making it fun, convenient, and safe; basically singing along to songs in the car on my daily commute, but in a femme voice. A lot of the techniques used for singing or projecting your voice apply to voice training as well, especially when it comes to not pushing your voice too far. It was really helpful to have a private space where you can speak free of anyone's judgement but your own. On top of that, I needed to drive every day anyways, so I didn't need to cut into my relaxation time.

While that approach really helped, at a certain point I hit a wall where I needed to hear what I actually sounded like. You can't tell what you actually sound like without external help, and a program that can play your voice back to you can help you get outside of your head. I found Voice Tools to be a great app for my needs, but any halfway decent audio mixing program like Audacity can work if you just keep rerecording over the same clip (I don't actually recommend Audacity, that was just an example of the type of program you can use). It will be unpleasant hearing you own voice, but it certainly beats having someone else critique it for you.

Thankfully, all the practice I did before allowed me to get through that phase in only a couple weeks. From there, I moved on to using my voice full time, which was more of a mental challenge than a technical one. I found that I often slipped back into a masc voice whenever I wasn't actively concentrating, as my brain defaulted to it whenever I was in front of people. That took another few weeks of being very mindful to not use any other voice, regardless of the context.

Eventually, my femme voice became the default, which is why I malefailed before starting HRT. I needed to travel through deeply conservative areas at the time, and I figured I would be safer if I boymoded. However, after a month of using a femme voice full time, I could no longer use my masc voice in front of others. Combined with my long hair and very sparse facial hair, multiple people gendered me as female despite my best efforts. At that point, I gave up on ever boymoding again.

While I do kinda miss being able to do a masc voice, especially for singing, the dysphoria keeps me from learning to do both. I don't even know for certain what I used to sound like.

Amazing, thank you so much! Especially the tip about practicing in the car, I have a long commute rn, and it’s harder for me to make the time when I’m at home, so I’m definitely going to give that a try
