Your life (and your GF's, who might use the old socket) is precious, better check it once in a while. You don't want that kind of spicy. Also, other sockets might be connected to the GFCI of this one. Testing is no big deal, there's just a loud click if it disconnects correctly. It usually takes a bit of force to reset it after the test to return to normal operation.
