There's ways to get out of it. People who don't are either cowards or all in on the fascism.
Yes. Women are also required, but there is an alternative community service option available to them. Some minor ethnic groups are exempted from the requirement, but for the vast majority it is mandatory.
Its 2 years 8 months for men, 2 years for women. Having been in the IDF as an citizen from birth is a point about someone's circumstances rather than their character.
However that man was in the IDF for 5 years, so he did volunteer beyond the conscription requirement.
All this is according to wikipedia I am no expert.
Dodging usually cost some months of jail time. So it's the choice between that or engaging in ethnic cleansing
