So they are intentionally spending more to design a second version without user replaceable batteries, that really is hostile design.

Fuck Nintendo.

Agreed.

But it also proves that you need government intervention for companies to make the best products for consumers.

Product > profit

That's Nintendo in a nutshell tbh.

Eh depends how many factories or even just lines in the factory they’re using to produce them. Cheaper to retool some of the lines than all of them.

Should they have made them all with replaceable batteries in the first place? Yeah.

I doubt they were blindsided by these regulations. Maybe they were hoping to somehow get an exemption?

Either way, fuck them and everyone else making devices with non-replaceable batteries.

I assume there are contracts to build the old design. Changing or breaking the contract will probably make it even more expensive for Nintendo. Also there are lot of in stock presumably. I wouldn't rule out a future version of the Switch 2 in other regions, with replaceable batteries. Maybe for a future Switch 2 OLED and Mini.

I know, I give Nintendo too much of benefit of doubt... bad habbit of me. I don't even like Nintendo (anymore).

Even if we ignore the manufacturing and material costs, changing over the entire production infrastructure (from injection molding to electronics and final assembly) is insanely expensive and would effectively shut down production until all of the verification runs are done. This way they can continue production for the unaffected regions.

I'm not covering for Nintendo (they can burn in a fire for all I care), but I have worked in an electronics factory and knew some of the process engineers: any kind of change is a massive pain in the ass downstream.

Evem then, hardware revisions were always a thing. Doing something they're forced to rather than what they'd themselves want is surely a bigger pain in the ass, but clearly a hardware revision in and of itself isn't that big of a pain to be a shit hits the fan-only move.

It's a regular part of manufacturing.

On one hand I agree but on the other hand this EU version will probably have less battery capacity or even processing power as a trade-off. It has to fit in the same case and with the same components after all.

[-] dewritoninja@pawb.social 13 points 4 days ago

But you can always carry a second battery and be at 100 percent instantly like the old days (2012)

[-] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I‘m not sure if replaceable means that. In fact I am very doubtful replaceable means you can replace it like older laptop batteries or Gameboy batteries. It‘s more like replacing a 3DS battery I imagine. So no, very much not be at 100 percent just like in the old days unless you regularly replaces your 3DS batteries. Not sure why you would.

[-] dewritoninja@pawb.social 1 points 3 days ago

Well if the backplate is screwed in like the 3ds I'm pretty sure someone would make a 3dprinted design that uses magnets and is easier to replace. If I ever get an European switch I'm going to model that if no one else does

[-] BlackVenom@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Real gamers skip the batteries and have their GBA on AC... Hoping mom doesn't step on the cord and yank it out again.

[-] Dotcom@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 days ago

When I was a kid I played Crisis Core on the psp but didn't have a memory card so I just had to leave it plugged in and running for a week. I was terrified that it would be unplugfed to vacuum or something while I was at school.
