Do software synthesizers like fluidsynth count?

Yes! Physical synthesisers aren’t often cheap, and lots of people start out with soft synths.

Edit: Also, pretty much the only difference between a physical, digital synth and a software synth is the hardware it’s running on. Arturia released a software version of their new Minifreak synth, I picked it up on introductory special for $49 and it’s heaps of fun. I’m pretty sure if you have the hardware one, you can hook it up and get double the voices from it using the software one as well.
