Is this a reference to something? Totally out of the loop

Classic internet transphobe behavior was to say, "I sexually identify as an attack helicopter" to mock anyone with any sort of gender diverse presentation. It became an often posted copypasta, that was pretty much unavoidable on the internet a decade or so ago.

A trans author took that idea from the meme seriously. What if someone could be an attack helicopter, as their gender? They wrote a work of speculative fiction in which the military uses gender as a form of coercive control.

People on the internet assumed the author was a bigot, and bullied the author off the internet, and into detransitioning as I recall.

It meme isn't. This is a 4+ year old meme about former edgelords cracking into transfems. I'm as clueless as you

There is a anti trans joke that if you can identify as a different gender then I can identify as an attack helicopter and expect to be treated as such.

It's to bad about the anti trans aspect because I find the helicopter part hilarious.

Ah, sorry I was referring to the anime aspect. I've always been conflicted about the attack helicopter meme though, if it had been sincere I could've strongly related - when I was a kid, I wanted to grow up and be a firetruck. I still want to be a firetruck. How sick would that be?

Yeah the firetruck energy is how I want to engage with the meme.
