Trump is everything I dread of becoming when I get to his age: a mean-spirited, angry old man who tries to pull everybody back to the standards of his past instead of - if not understanding the present - accepting that the present doesn't belong to him anymore.
One of my biggest nightmares is becoming like that without realizing it, and ending up hated by everybody and not understanding why. It must be tiring to live a life of rage and spite.
Being honest here, I don't think this is something to be terribly concerned about. Age is clearly not a defining trait of heartless reactionary conservatism. It happens that a lot of our aging population has turned hard right, and our geriatric politicians show little to no humanity. But they didn't get that way because they got older.
Don't let the world harden you, and do your best to maintain quality relationships. I have multiple family members who have only gotten more liberal as they've gotten older, and have been some of the most accepting of me when I came out as trans, even though they're in their late 80s and living in rural Texas. Meanwhile, my stepdad was already a bigoted and cantankerous fuck by the time he was 45, living in a fairly liberal area.
Age has nothing to do with it. Allowing yourself to become isolated from others and feeling the world is out to get you seems to be what happens to most people. The speedrun tactic I see for this is retiring and spending 16 hours a day at home with Fox News on the TV.
