The decision by the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, this week to resign as head of the Liberal party has set in motion a leadership race against the backdrop of a looming general election, which will be held amid political turmoil triggered by Donald Trump’s “America first” economic nationalism. It has also given Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, an opportunity to inject himself into yet another country’s political turmoil.

Since Trudeau’s resignation on Monday, Musk has posted repeatedly about Canadian politics on X – the platform formerly known as Twitter he bought in 2022 for $44bn. He has praised clips of Pierre Poilievre, the leader of Canada’s Conservative party, while relishing in Trudeau’s downfall and engaging with rightwing Canadian influencers.

“Girl, you’re not the governor (sic) of Canada anymore, so doesn’t matter what you say,” Musk tweeted in response in the middle of the night on Tuesday.

Musk can legally vote for prime minster, therefore he is allowed to influence Canadian voters as equal as anybody else.

If you take his tweet at face value literally about "Girl, you ain't the govenor...", it proves that you're not catching on to the nuances and subtleties that he was referrencing. If you want try to spread hate and perversion about Elon, grasp what you speak on.

We don't vote for prime minister buddy.

[-] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

The irony of what they said is palpable.

Not surprised the account is only 5 days old.

If you want try to spread hate and perversion about Elon, grasp what you speak on.

Sure, here's an idea: Elon Musk is the world's richest man by a large margin, emotionally unstable, narcissistic, and insecure. Nothing good for society or the general public will come from giving him any position of power.

He has a lot to gain by influencing elections, and he has a proven record of supporting politicians and making them change their mind on policies in a way that benefits Elon's companies. His trans daughter hates him for being a terrible person, but he blames her liberal-leaning views for it, calling it "the woke mind virus" and platforming selfish, anti-liberal/anti-socialist nut jobs as a "fuck you" to the threat he believed took his "son" away from him.

He has a track record of lying about his achievements, promising the future "will be ready by the end of next year" every year and only delivering something half-baked. But, that's just his successes. He pays people to be good at things, then he claims the credit all for himself to seem cool and likeable. You know, like how he was claiming to be top 10 in Path of Exile 2, only to be caught obviously not knowing how to actually play the game he was supposedly world-class in.

Or if that's not sad enough for you, have you heard of Adrian Dittman? If you don't know who he is, let me tell you: he's Elon's alt account on Twitter... using a voice changer to pretend to be not-Elon... while acting as Elon's number one fan.

In conclusion, fuck Elon Musk. Somebody who is that insecure, pathetic, and self-centered shouldn't be allowed to buy his way into influencing politics.

Musk can legally vote for prime minster

I didn't realize that Musk was a member of Canada's Parliament.

[-] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 16 points 2 months ago

he is allowed to influence Canadian voters as equal as anybody else.

Do you believe he's influencing Canadian voters as equal as anybody else?

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

Oh, he's speaking in code, just like Donny.

Got it, chief.

Born in South Africa to a mother who was born in Canada. If Wikipedia is to be believed, he holds citizenship for South Africa, Canada, and USA.

[-] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 months ago

how does he have triple citizenship!? everyone else they make you renounce some of that once your 18, but this asshole is so rich he gets to just be part of a special class of one? i hate this guy

[-] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

In Westernized nations no one is forced to give up their citizenship in one nation to vote in another.

Dual citizenship guarantees one with all the benefits of both nations.

[-] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

The USA doesn't recognize dual cotizenship with all nations for example you can have Mexican citizenship or US citizenship you cannot have both but you can be a dual US/UK citizen. This is because America is still quite racist.

[-] Barbarian@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

Duel citizenships guarantee the right to satisfaction in the ring of honour.

[-] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 months ago

okay. just going off the united states. where he naturalized. where you have to renounce your prior nation of citizenship, and where people don't get to have more that two citizenships past 18. guess we're not westernized. and also the rules still don't apply to the world's richest dickhead

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

If you become a naturalized citizen they make you renounce other citizenships.

You have to have parents from 2 countries who have 2 separate citizenships to be a dual.

[-] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

The USA.gov website implies you are wrong, else why would they say this?

Whether you were born an American citizen or became one through naturalization, if you have dual citizenship

[-] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

U.S. law does not require a U.S. citizen to choose between U.S. citizenship and another (foreign) nationality (or nationalities).

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/travel-legal-considerations/Relinquishing-US-Nationality/Dual-Nationality.html

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago

Except he wouldn't have been able to keep 2 of them if he became american.

[-] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

You can have Canadaian andUS citizenship.

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

Yes, I didn't say you couldn't.

I said if you apply for a US citizenship, they make you renounce your other citizenships.

In Muskrats case that would be SA and Canada.

[-] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Except they don’t do this?

“US. law does not require a U.S. citizen to choose between U.S. citizenship and another (foreign) nationality (or nationalities). A U.S. citizen may naturalize in a foreign state without any risk to their U.S. citizenship”

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/travel-legal-considerations/Relinquishing-US-Nationality/Dual-Nationality.html

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

The US might not require that. The country you are joining might not have the same rules.

Edit: Also that is for becoming a citizen of a different country than the US. Which really doesn't contradict my statement.

[-] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

You claimed the USA requires people to gove up their citizenship and they do not.

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Edit: how does your comment and link back your statement when it's about Americans becoming a citizen of a different country?

[-] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

“I said if you apply for a US citizenship, they make you renounce your other citizenships.“

That’s what Im replying to. This claim you made is without question incorrect.

You are trying very hard to cling to an incorrect notion.

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago

And your link doesn't support your statement.

[-] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Yes, it does. You don’t lose other citizenships when you gain US citizenship.

You keep asserting otherwise, how about you back that claim up with proof?

[-] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Ted Cruz had dual citizenship and held office, so I'm unsure how you think it can't be done.

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Where did I say he couldn't hold office?

Edit:Ted cruz also has a canadian and american parent.

[-] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

In order to hold office you have to have citizenship. Cruz held office while (unknowingly) having dual citizenship ... until he found out and renounced his Canadian citizenship.

So you are demonstrably incorrect.

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You seem to be making up things that I have said.

Please quote me.

[-] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

If you become a naturalized citizen they make you renounce other citizenships.

As many of us have said this is demonstrably incorrect. America does NOT force anyone to give up a foreign citizenship to gain US citizenship.

[-] prole 3 points 2 months ago

He is a billionaire. He is a nation unto himself. What it says on his passport, at this point, is irrelevant.

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

Except he doesn't have an American citizenship, as he would have had to renounce the other 2.

[-] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

America recognizes dual citizenship with many nations just not Mexico which totally has nothing to do with racism /s

[-] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Yes, through his mother

[-] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago

Are you aware that you clearly don't understand how parliamentary systems work?

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 months ago

What are you talking about? None of that is relevant to the Canadian electoral system.

[-] Soulg@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 months ago

Calm down Elon you're a terrible liar
