One of the coolest parts of The Expanse IMHO was that The Mormons commissioned a giant space ship, and it didn't feel forced or far-fetched.

You can also take a fairly selfish view and come to the same conclusion. Like, I don't want to see homeless encampments, or really sick and untreated people, or panhandlers, or (...) while I'm walking around in my city. I can solve this problem by 1) moving to a nice suburb, or 2) having my tax dollars go to fix a problem that affects me. 1) is off the table because I want to live in the city, and 2)

while it helps the greater good

also helps me directly. (2 can also be addressed in a draconian fashion, which is not what I'm advocating at all.)

I think one problem is looking at things as zero sum. It's not. If you are healthy and housed and fed then you're not

to be very crass

an eyesore, you're adding to the fabric of the city. I want street musicians who are playing for fun, not because they're trying to make enough to afford dinner.

Certain crops can benefit think from some shade throughout the day:

The study aggregates the effect of agrivoltaics on crop yields at different sites. Tomatoes saw up to double yield with agrivoltaics, while wheat, cucumbers, potatoes and lettuce showed significant negative impacts and corn and grapes showed minimal impact.

I assume that maximal crop output would happen if you just grow things in their optimal climate, but then you rely more heavily on transportation.

Yeah, I feel like the right has such a black-and-white/zero nuance view of things. So then the left goes and does the same thing!

My sense is that these A*AB movements are really trying to say, "the institution of X is fundamentally flawed," and that's something I agree with definitely. But it's worded provocatively, which is just...assinine. Like, the little old lady who would be priced out of her home if not for renting out a room to a college kid, below market value? Yeah total bastard...

Not every ISP! Where I live there's an awesome ISP, Sonic, which is pro-NN, and last I heard only offers "best effort" service

which means there's no throttling your link, no paid tiers; if the fiber and hardware can support 10Gbps symmetric, then that's what you get.

Sadly, they're not the norm. And sadly, not offered at my address.

According to the screenshot, it doesn't even call her a trans woman, it calls her a man. Presumably because man and woman are the only options on her little TERF world.

That's an unfair characterization.

It's not just the things they don't like that can't happen...it's also the things they do like that must happen! See, for instance, prayer in school. (Separation of Church and State only applies to satanic stuff or something, idk...)

Double-sided phone could be pretty neat.

Before criticizing the GOP for this, let's not forget the kind of degenerate that Salk was: not only did he not seek profit for the polio vaccine, but he also worked on AIDS vaccine research.

So I think the GOP should be lauded for their consistency here! Surely the work of someone who wanted healthcare for all (regardless of means) and who supported efforts towards a disease which was at the time synonymous with certain "lifestyle choices" cannot be trusted.

(Big fat /s, but I really hope that's obvious.)

Professor should know that it's etymologically Greek, not Latin, so octopi is generally considered to be wrong.

Octopuses, or octopodes if you're feeling badass, would be preferable afaik.

Maybe I'm naive but I kinda don't get it. People talk about defederating as if...what, all Meta IP addresses will be magically blocked from scraping your content? Any script kiddie can harvest Lemmy/Mastodon/whatever content.

Has Meta shown itself to be a bad actor? Yes. Should my email provider block all emails from Meta? Well...that's a bit much I think? If Facebook email still existed, should my email provider block that?

My point is yes, Meta bad, but all Thread users also bad? I thought

and apparently I'm very wrong here

that the Federation paradigm was kinda like email. And the only email I want blocked is a domain where every single user is malicious, not a domain run by a malicious entity which has normal people as users, who aren't necessarily very tech literate.

I don't actually care, but I just find it a little confusing tbh.

Cycling? Great, increased funding for infrastructure and increased general awareness. Amateur radio? Lower prices for rigs, innovation, and more contacts to be made.

If your interest in a hobby is based on its exclusivity, it may be that you're more interested in exclusivity than in the hobby itself...
