in 2018, Facebook told Vox that it doesn't use private messages for ad targeting. But a few months later, The New York Times, citing "hundreds of pages of Facebook documents," reported that Facebook "gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read Facebook users’ private messages."

Surprising? No. Appalling? Yes.

GOS: Steel City recently announced the launch of their 'Baphomet Bags' campaign to help their unhoused neighbours in the Pittsburgh area offering ways to donate money or through Amazon Lists. They have now announced the location of physical drop-off points should people want to donate pre-owned items.

These are (so far): Grim Wizard located at 1206 Arlington Ave and Studio 42 in Beaver Falls.

As per title really. I need a backup solution for backing up my home directory to an external USB drive that;

  1. I can schedule to run x times per week
  2. Encrypts the contents (into an encrypted zip file is fine)
  3. Puts the encrypted backup onto an external USB drive
  4. Keeps the last x amount of backups.

I've found loads that can do one or more of these things but not all of them. I really like LuckyBackup for example but it doesn't encrypt. I just want something I can set and forget.

System is LMDE 6 (Faye).

Satanically Curious? (self.globalorderofsatan)
submitted 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) by leraje to c/globalorderofsatan

I've got a few messages on Matrix recently that shows that our communication methods area bit confusing. Noted and I'll make things clearer on the main site but in the meantime;

We do most communicating via Discord. If you are a Satanist, or simply Satanically curious and want to participate then:

  1. GOS-wide Discord server - this is open to all GOS members, whatever country specific Order they belong to. It is also open to Satanists who might belong to other organisations or none as well as people who are not Satanists but curious or interested. Maybe you're thinking about applying but want to see what we're about first - this is a good way to do that. There is an application form as we want to screen for racists/transphobes/homophobes/misogynists/ableists etc. You are not applying for GOS Membership, just Discord access.

  2. GOS: Steel City is our US/North American specific Discord server. It's operated by GOS: Steel City, our US Order. This is for people who specifically want to join that Order. There is an application form. The form is for full membership.

  3. GOS Polska same as above, but for Polish full Members.

  4. GOS DE same as above but for all our German SPEAKING Orders - so Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Full Members only.

I hope that's a bit clearer.

I don't feel ashamed, but I often feel cold.

There was a news article a day or two ago about a pensioner vandalising a statue of Thatcher. I feel the same way about this act as I did that - good on the perpetrator.

Unless a work of art is housed somewhere meant to cause reflection on all the actions a person took in their full context which includes making clear the problematic acts of the subject, they shouldn't be somewhere clearly meant to commemorate them. And if they are, then they're fair game.

It's ridiculously expensive. It's not private if you have to link your searches to a paid account and none of those payment providers are private. They don't seem to have open sourced any of their key functionality, meaning you have to trust them to not be collecting your activity data.

I spent a long time getting rid of software and using services that I either no longer trusted or was unable to make an informed choice due to their lack of open source code and I'm not going to take a retrograde step now. And that's without the issue with their choice (a continued choice I believe) to use Brave results, a company I'm personally not prepared to support.

Markets are greedy and never satisfied. A fracturing of services has led to situation where it's impossible for the average person to be able to afford all the streaming services they need in order to watch their stuff. And even if they could, they now have to pay extra to exclude adverts - the lack of which was a major selling point for streaming services. Pay extra to watch in high quality and no matter what service you use and what content you've bought - music, TV, books, movies. games - it's all stuffed full of DRM that can literally remove the media from your devices. You don't even really own the stuff you've bought.

So yeah, I fully appreciate why some people pirate stuff.

Did you miss the part where you told him asking for context meant he was biased? And they're only assumptions if this was the first time this comedian had ever done a netflix special making trans people the butt of his jokes. Once someone has form for it, and we know he's done it again, they're no longer assumptions, they're a reasonable inference.

In my own personal experience, Nextcloud;

  • Needs constant attention to prevent falling over
  • Administration is a mess
  • Takes far too long to get used to its 'little ways'
  • Basics like E2EE don't work
  • Sync works when it feels like it
  • Updating feels like russian roulette

Only in an American advert could a character come back from a major coffee producing region and think the shit in that tub is real coffee.

Reddit was created as a Digg clone so there were no sub's and no comments, just links to up/down vote.

A lot of those links were scraped in an effort to make it seem popular. Both Aaron and Spez have admitted that.

Nothing is open source and my days of choosing to trust companies upfront are long gone.

The UK political cycle:

  1. Tories elected because they made people think Labour were bad with money
  2. Tories stay in power for a couple of decades
  3. Rich people get richer, public services get shitter, prices for everyone else get higher. They coast along on a tide of right-wing populism for awhile
  4. Eventually people catch on, Tories get voted out
  5. Labour need to spend a fortune getting things back on track. Might get two terms.
  6. Go to 1.

Is it possible to (at least temporarily):

  1. Turn off instance image hosting (disable pictrs)
  2. Disallow image and video posts across all communities
  3. As in Firefish, turn off caching of remote images from other instances.

whilst longer term solutions are sought? This would at least ensure poor mods aren't exposed to this shit and an instance could be more positive they're not inadvertently hosting CSAM.

I'm pretty new to this instance, having moved from .world recently. I haven't interacted with anyone from hexbear yet but I've seen some of their members behaviour on other instances and followed threads back to that instance.

They seem to have a self fulfilling persecution complex centred around their political opinions. I see them on their own instance saying things like 'any instance that doesn't believe the exact, very narrowly defined ideology that we do are stupid and they hate what we stand for', then they go onto the other instances and make even the most innocent posts that have nothing to do with politics into commentary on their ideology. It's like they can't see the world in any other way, or respect that others might. Then, when they get banned, they head back to their instance and say 'see? they're just intolerant boot lickers'. It often feels like they're trying to get banned, or their instance defederated simply so they can happily confirm to each other their belief that everyone is out to get them.

It can get pretty mentally exhausting seeing people say something utterly innocuous like 'I like chips' and then a bunch of hexbear users launch into a long winded political sub-thread on what a dick you are for liking NATO-loving, liberal, colonialist chips.

They are trans and lgbtq+ allies and that's a good thing. I'm just not sure that that one aspect of their makeup drowns out all the baggage that comes with it. I always feel it comes with conditions attached - we'll be your allies as long as we can flood your instance. I have no doubt that if this instance were to defed with them, their allyship would no longer extend to blahaj members.
