Very difficult to definitively categorise this one. Read the full review here.

Quote from TBMBMC: "The Appalachian Mountains are best known for its deep and rich folklore surrounding mythical creatures and ominous happenings throughout its magical rolling hills. But the true story of the region is much less fantastical and much more despairing. The region has a long and painful history of exploitation of natural resources, abuse of labor rights, genocide of indigenous peoples, addiction, and a plague of predatory evangelism. This 5-track demo seeks to address some of the pains of the place I call home."

A New Books/Reading Podcast (devilslibrary.org)
submitted 1 month ago by leraje to c/books@lemmy.world

Long term Lemmy user and books@ subscriber here! I just wanted to let this Community know that myself and a couple of my Satanist friends (we are Atheistic Satanists, I am independent of any org, they are both members of Global Order of Satan) have started 'The Devil's Library' - a podcast about books and reading where we choose then read a book and record an episode on what we thought. For the first episode (which launched two days ago) we chose Iain Reid's "I'm Thinking of Ending Things".

You can find us in the usual places - including on PeerTube - if you'd like to listen/subscribe.

(Yes, I did check with this Communities mod team that it was OK to post this).

Been awhile since I saw a thread like this and they're always good for at least one or two things I've never heard of before. Bonus points if the software is open source and cross platform. Extra bonus points if you link to where we can see it/get it.

My contribution: Destiny which is an anonymous, P2P, E2EE file sharing app - its basically a GUI for a Magic Wormhole implementation. Works on Linux (tarball or appimage), Win, Mac, Android (inc f-droid) and iOS. Only downside is it's not been updated for 2 years.

You had a choice OP

  1. Vote to maintain a bad status quo
  2. Vote to make things a billion times worse via fascism
  3. Start a revolution

Instead you chose secret option d. Make 'both sides equally bad' memes to justify the acceptance of fascism.

Always vote against the fascist. Or revolt.

More Updates From GOS (self.globalorderofsatan)
submitted 3 months ago by leraje to c/globalorderofsatan

So, first up - our Satan Not Hatin' campaign to tackle bigotry and fascism in alt music like metal, punk, electronica, goth, neofolk etc now has over 460 opt-in participants. The campaign recently launched our second compilation album called Mortem Tyrannis - available on Bandcamp or Ampwall - and was organised by House of Heretics who are our Seattle/Washington State based Order and features 25 North American bands/artists with all money going to the ACLU.

One of our other US Orders GOS: Resurgens/Free Society Satanists who are based in Atlanta, Georgia have now added their podcast (The Ave Satanas Podcast) to the main GOS YouTube account too so you can now get twice the amount of Satanism in your ears on YT via their podcast as well as the GOS UK podcast, GOSPod that already exists there. And speaking of GOSPod, they have recently started introducing 'minisodes' which are shorter episodes that run alongside the longer full episodes - these are much more light hearted and discuss a whole range of things (so far, mainly myself and my sibling, Ligeia discussing our love of horror books!).

Speaking of our UK Order, we will be branching out to attend new flea markets across the UK. Next month we will be attending North Wales Macabre Market (Instagram link, sorry) on Saturday 3rd May at Rhyl Town Hall and the very next day Sunday 4th May will see us at The Devils Fayre - Beltane Market at Voodoo in Belfast. If you're interested in coming along you can buy some merch or just have a chat :)

Our UK Order also has a new campaign in the initial planning stages, regarding recent news that not only is the pseudoscience of conversion 'therapy' still in use in the UK, some people are also using religious abuse as 'treatments' - including ritual prayer and exorcism. We have things to say about that, so watch this space.

In the meantime, hail yourselves, hail Satan!

Hi :)

I’m a user on this instance and also mod of a community on this instance about atheistic/nonthesitic Satanism. We are not CoS, nor TST, we are called Global Order of Satan (link is in my profile). Many of our members across the world are lgbtqia+ , possibly even a majority but we don’t really keep formalised records so its hard to say for sure.

Our UK Order (of whom I am a member) are looking into starting a campaign into the religion based abuse of conversion therapy. Obviously we knew it happened but we weren’t aware things like exorcism were used and this clearly falls within our, uh, areas of interest!

This is a delicate subject and I have no wish to trigger anyone but if anyone wanted to share (anonymised) experiences they may have had with religion-based conversion ‘therapy’ (I keep using scarequotes as its clearly pseudoscience) via DM with me, they would be very helpful in giving us some background. If you are not happy with DMing then I am also on Matrix (links also in bio) or you can mail me leraje gosatan com - you can get free anonymous email forwarding here

Edit: Anonymous cryptpad form here - Markdown keeps killing the link. you'll need to copy/paste this: https://cryptpad.fr/form/#/2/form/view/SqtKYw8b2pa%20a4u2EU0OFN9-6l5E3qGVSt9r6-U%20XQo/

I guess I might be the only person on the face of the planet dependent on PhotoGIMP so this might be useful for no-one but just on the offchance...

After updating Gimp to 3 and updating photogimp too, it was for me totally and utterly broken. I don't know enough to say why, but it was. It loaded the new splash screen but when fully loaded the whole interface was the standard Gimp one and all interface tools, layouts etc were also (as far as I could tell) standard Gimp. I searched for answers but couldn't find any. Maybe this is a 'me' issue or maybe the updates are too new or maybe photogimp doesn't have enough of a userbase to notice.

So, I've ended up rolling back to gimp 2.10 and the 2020.1 version of photogimp. However, this is not a straightforward process. Here's what I had to do (assuming flatpak).

Remove all photogimp bits and pieces from $HOME/.var, $HOME/.local and most especially $HOME/.config

DO NOT uninstall Gimp itself.

Then revert gimp 3.02 to 2.10 like so:

First you need the commit id of previous versions of Gimp.

flatpak remote-info --log flathub org.gimp.GIMP

For 2.10 its 83b335255cc239e223ada842f99107d1d6ce51b511a8ae2a278005c2e2809242

So this is technically an update even though we're reverting not upgrading, so Gimp itself still needs to be installed. Might need to sudo the next command.

flatpak update --commit=83b335255cc239e223ada842f99107d1d6ce51b511a8ae2a278005c2e2809242 org.gimp.GIMP

Let it do its thing. When its ready, you can (optionally but I did) tell flatpak to ignore updates like so:

flatpak mask org.gimp.GIMP

When that's all done, open and run gimp and you should now have 2.10

Close Gimp.

Now download photogimp 2022.1 from the releases page, then extract the relevant files into $HOME/.var and $HOME/.local respectively.

Double check $HOME/.config/GIMP is definitely gone.

Open Gimp again and you should have photogimp back to its pre-gimp3 self.

There’s a reason that cookies and privacy policies (in the EU at least) have become such an online nuisance. These assurances of your safety and privacy are nothing more than a pretext to get consent. Your “anonymised” data is sold to an infinite regress of third parties, analysed, correlated and de-anonymised again. Any smart device you use, your browsing habits, banking transactions, your GPS position are all used to deduce fine grain information about you. Then weaponised against you for as much profit as possible.

"My initial reaction to this, because our president is a lot of talk, was like 'I'll believe it when I see it' … and today I saw it on my new passport," Schafer said."

The disconnect between what American's thought Trump would do and what he and his team repeatedly and unambiguously said he was going to do is genuinely dismaying.

I'm not sure this is quite at a face-eating leopard level of denial of the obvious, but its approaching it.

Trouble is Andy, we now know what you privately think and all the follow up statements in the world can't put that genie back in the bottle.

Proton is an org that exists in an industry whose customers do not trust easily. Publicly aligning with someone utterly untrustable, either as an individual or as a board, has tainted Proton and adversely affected peoples ability to trust. How can we ever know when Proton will find it acceptable again to respond positively to a Trumpian decision or how it might affect our privacy?

[-] leraje 141 points 1 year ago

If you decide to not use StickerMule again, as the org I'm part of now has, I'd suggest that rather than simply not using them to login to your SM account, then contact them via their Support interface and ask them to remove your account and all data associated with it or direct them to tell you how you can do it yourself and end by telling them exactly why.

Maybe pay teachers enough that they don't have to do this if they don't want to?

And if they do want to, how does it affect their efficacy as a teacher?

[-] leraje 98 points 2 years ago

Clearly incorrect as no one would be sad.

It's amazing how many snowflake comedians start crying about being cancelled and then go on to have numerous netflix specials about it. Almost like they were never actually cancelled in the first place but they learnt that if they said they were enough times, the terminally dim people who enjoy their material will pay money to see their bully fantasies played out on stage by an old rich guy.

It is different. I had cause to go back a week or two ago to look for an old post of mine and I did have a bit of a poke about in my old subs too. It was like a war zone. Blatant no fucks given racism, incel level women hating, transphobia and ableism of the most vitriolic kind. And these weren't just the massive general subs, some of them were niche interest subs where I felt I belonged at the time. Has it changed to become like that since June or was I just so used to it before that that I'd never noticed how toxic it was? Did I just used to shrug and say to myself 'well, that's just reddit'. Literally everyone seemed angry and hateful.

I'm not claiming the fediverse is perfect or free from that sort of shit but either through the practicalities of federation, or better moderation or a smaller userbase or a more mature userbase or a mix of one or more of those things it doesn't feel exclusionary to me. I often see on posts like this some people calling Lemmy a left-wing echo chamber and whilst I do agree there's more people of a left-wing bent on here I think echo chamber is a bit much and is a phrase maybe used by those who live in a country without a functioning left-wing political party. I've not encountered a communist or tankie since Hexbear fucked off back to their kindergarten.

As for the Guardian article, they've fallen into the same trap as I'm concerned the fediverse might fall into by federating with Meta - assuming high numbers equal success or victory. If you have corporate/economics based mindset I can see how that works, but to me success equals a popular, useful community site entirely free from algorithms and other forms of manipulative control. One that isn't gathering data via ads and tracking on its userbase to sell on (lets remember that reddit weren't upset that AI were scraping reddit, they were upset that the company weren't seeing any money from that). A community that grows organically, with all that that implies - sometimes growth might be very slow, it might stop entirely for awhile, maybe even reverse - but the emphasis should be on the people making the community better.

Reddit forgot somewhere along the way that it was the users who made reddit what it was. Look at the stats for r/askreddit - in particular the posts per day and comments per day - look at the trend since 2020. There may well be the same amount of users on reddit, but we all know a certain percentage of them are bots and even if they weren't, just looking at those two graphs tells you everything about people's level of interest in participating on reddit.

The only thing high user numbers guarantee sites like reddit is ad revenue. Nothing else.

Just a reminder to my American friends that everyone was absolutely positive there was no way Trump would get elected in 2016. You sleptwalked into a near dictatorship because everyone agreed the idea that he could win was a big joke. There's very real possibility that a refusal to believe he can do it again will mean he does do it again. And if he does, I don't think it'll be a near dictatorship you have to live in.
