Danke!

It works the same way in Germany. If you're playing music in essentially any venue, even just on the radio, you pay a royalties fee. For places that do it everyday there is usually a flat yearly fee. At least here, a good chunk of that money does indeed fund other cultural endeavors.

I still love my fairphone 3+. Had it for several years and have yet to need to do any repair or replacement. Pleasantly surprised and impressed! I also love that I can easily put a different OS on the phone (currently using e/os).

I have a who is a screen actor and they often work for very little pay. Even a recurring character on a hit TV show might not even be making enough to afford health insurance.

This friend recently landed a small but important role in a movie that gained somewhat of a "cult" status after its release. The money he makes from selfies and autographs at conventions is sometimes the only money he earns that month. I can see why it disappoints fans, but I can also understand these actors who are just trying to stay afloat. Especially the Trek actors who often don't seem to get much other work.

As much as I loved SDV when I played through it, I don't know if I could start another run despite the new content. Too much lol

Same with the resentment! Lots of people in the US don't want to hear how much better it is elsewhere. GrEaTesT NaTiOn oN eArTh!

As an American who has been abroad for many years, can confirm! I'm visiting the states at the moment and its crazy to hear a family member talking about trying to convince their boss that the employees should get five paid sick days a year instead of only three. Three! A year! Insane.

Ist da was kaputt?

In all honesty, I will probably just tip the minimum amount and try not to let it get to me. Its not like I'll be out eating by myself anyway, there will be plenty of social pressure to help me along :)

But imagine if all jobs worked this way. Oh, you wanted a good outcome for your surgery? Maybe you should have tipped your surgeon! Oh, you wanted your taxes done correctly? Should have tipped! Sorry boss, I would have gotten you that report on time, but you forgot to leave me a tip!

I also think its silly that tips are based on the price of your meal, as if that has anything to do with the service whatsoever. So the person who ordered a steak pays more in a tip than the person who ordered a salad? Why? It would make way more sense to tip based on time spent in the establishment. I would understand a standard 5$ tip per half-hour or something way more.

But isn't the the employer who is the asshole for not paying a living wage?

Hey Folks!

I've been living abroad for over half my life in a country where tipping is not the norm. At most you would round up. 19€ bill? Here's a 20, keep this change.

Going to the US soon to visit family and the whole idea of tipping makes me nervous. It seems there's a lot of discussion about getting rid of tipping, but I don't know how much has changed in this regard.

The system seems ridiculously unfair, and that extra expense in a country where everything is already so expensive really makes a difference.

So will AITA if I don't tip? Is it really my personal responsibility to make sure my server is paid enough?

I had been thinking about leaving Reddit for months before the API announcement came. I was tired of the toxic content, also tired of being drawn in by it.

I was never a power user, lurked a lot and only posted and commented in a few niche subs. I suppose I can still lurk, but so far I like it here at Lemmy.

My 3rd party app (RedReader) will apparently be allowed to stay for free (due to their high accesibility), but who knows how long that will last.

I deleted my account, didn't bother dealing with a comment deleting script. I just made my reasons very clear and hope they get the message.

Thanks to all who have been involved in creating these federated spaces!

I'm running Ubuntu Studio and Ardour on my aging HP laptop, and I'm considering getting something better.

When I bought the laptop I wasn't doing anything with audio production and was on a tight budget. Now that I do more with audio (and a bit with video) I'd like something more powerful.

I travel a lot for my job so a laptop is much preferred. Any tips for good, midrange machines or specs I should look out for?

The admin for my instance claims that 0.18 is very buggy, won't update the server until the next version is out and bugs are fixed. The new Jerboa still runs for me, but its a bit wonky... I might just downgrade back to the previous version until its sorted out.

Server Update? (feddit.de)
submitted 1 year ago by kilgore@feddit.de to c/main@feddit.de

I'm a professional instrumentalist and I've begun tinkering with digital audio production , hoping to start a side career composing digital music.

I've been working with Linux in general for over 15 years, and I'd like to stick with it, but I'm wondering if its actually viable in the professional world. It seems like most professionals are working with Ableton or other commercial software. I'm learning and working with Ardour, which seems great, but I wonder if I shouldn't be investing my time in software that will be more useful longterm.

Anyone here have thoughts/experience with this?

To be clear, I have no problem buying ebooks and do so quite often. But where I live its often hard to find ebooks in my preferred language without resorting to Am*zon, especially when it comes to the more obscure titles.

Now that Zlibrary is gone, where do people go for liberated ebooks?

My latest FO (feddit.de)

This darn blanket took me a whole year to knit! Not because it was so hard, or big, or that I knit so slowly. I have a small child myself and my knitting time is almost non existent! Most of this was done backstage at one music event or another (my job) .

The pattern is "Radiating Star Blanket" (free pattern!) by Alexis Layton. I don't remember what the yarn was because I bought it so long ago!

In the "about" section in the settings there is a link to donate to the development of Jerboa. The link just sends me to a page about donating to the Lemmy project in general. Where can I go to support Jerboa directly?

Hey folks! Instead of missing my niche communities on Reddit, I decided to try my hand at creating a community here on Lemmy.

I've been knitting for around 20 years and have even published a few of my original patterns. The first pattern I ever published got picked up by Knitty, which was quite a big deal for me back then. I published a few patterns afterwards, but my designing muse has been dormant for a while. I have several original designs which I've never published and I'm hoping to put them up on Ravelry one day.

But in general, I just wanted to start a knitting community here in the hopes that others will join and share their work, ask for advice, and just geek out about knitting in general.

If you don't have any current work to post, just introduce yourself. Lets start this community together!

I'm new to Lemmy, your typical Reddit refugee, and I'm missing some of the more niche subs I followed. I would like to start one or two of those here, but I'm a bit intimidated.

As I understand it, if I start a community I'm also the moderator. What kind of work does that entail?

Can I only create a community on the instance I joined, or can I also create a community elsewhere?

Is there a guide for creating new communities out there, especially for people who don't know much about the technical side of Lemmy?

Thanks!

Sounds like the same evidence-lacking claims that crop up once a year or so and lead precisely no where. Are we really calling this "news"?
