Welcome to Lemmy, I'm one of the devs and admins for this instance.

Being pro-piracy, and allowing torrent magnet links 🏴‍☠️ , is one of the original reasons I started working on lemmy ( even a lot of the better reddit alts refuse to allow magnet links, or be pirate-friendly).

One of the best ways to keep the stream alive, is by decentralizing the ways we find and access content. Torrents do this directly for data, but I hope that lemmy, as a federated reddit alternative, can eventually serve as a platform to aggregate, post, and comment on pirated data in a decentralized way.

More info about Lemmy including docs, how federation works, and a good onboarding site.

Welcome aboard!

Order of events...

  1. Looked up IP
  2. Connected to Tailscale, set exit node through Mullvad
  3. Looked up IP again, was different
  4. Started seeding in the background while working on other stuff
  5. At one point I saw Tailscale icon flicker
  6. Later I got an angry email from my ISP with a timestamp that lined up

Been seeding for years, and this was my first leak. Was for a recent popular film (Linux ISO) that I've been seeding for a year. I contacted Tailscale support to express my concern. This is what they said...

Though we have an open feature request for this (link), I don’t believe there are current plans to add a killswitch to the client for Mullvad.

If this is something that is important to you, the quickest solution to this would be to purchase a Mullvad subscription directly from them, since their client has a number of features more geared towards tightening users online privacy – including a killswitch.

So I suggest not using Tailscale with Mullvad for such purposes. I don't think this is a priority for them. For other uses it's been fine.

I imagine this could have been avoided with a restrictive torrent client configuration, as is typically recommended online. I've tried and failed to get that working in the past. I'll try again once I change out my VPN. If you've been putting that off, learn from my mistake and look into it!

Using this userscript I made : git.kaki87.net/KaKi87/userscripts/protonmailWithoutAnnoyances

ProtonMail allows scheduling and snoozing messages for free at preset times, e.g. tomorrow, next Monday, this weekend, etc., and always at 8, but makes people pay to choose a customized date and time.

I had a hunch that this restriction might only be implemented client-side, so I tried modifying the value in DevTools for the first time, and I couldn't believe it : that worked !

So, in order to automate this, I created a userscript that replaces the button press handler for the "custom" option, then lets you input whatever value you need, e.g. (next) Wednesday, (in) 30 minutes, (today at) 8 PM, Thursday at 7 (AM), etc.

Then, it lets the app believe that we're gonna schedule using the tomorrow preset, until it intercepts the request and swaps the time value with the user's choice.

Enjoy !

Hello people,

We (my SO and I) bought a Raspberry Pi 5 in the hopes of setting up like a HTPC on our living room TV, with the possibility of streaming torrents through it in 4K possibly. The problem is that I am an ~~incapable failure~~ absolute noob when it comes to everything internet streaming related, and so this got way too complicated way too fast and now I'm burned out and wanting to throw the fucking brick off the balcony, but that would be more than 150€ of our money lying on the cold, wet grass downstairs with nothing gained but a renewed sense of absolute failure on my part.

So can you help?

I installed LibreELEC and Kodi on it (and Mullvad VPN somehow, though the current setup uses OpenVPN which is getting removed in January 2026 so I'll have to migrate it to Wireguard eventually...) and then got Jacktook up and running. Eventually I realized I had to install and configure some other things too, so I decided to go with TorrServer. I also bought a 30-day subscription to Real-Debrid because apparently that is needed? I have no idea anymore, Kodi itself throws errors related to searches and shit, but I don't know how to access them on the machine, plus the UI/UX is way too clunky for my taste. I'd probably need to setup SSH to be able to access it easily from my desktop Arch Linux (btw), but last time I tried configuring even that was way too cumbersome and went way over my head. And the problem might even be the VPN that I set up, but I really don't know anymore and hate everything about not knowing.

Ever since RARBG shut down, finding scene releases for shows and movies has been arduous if not outright impossible. I usually frequent 1337x, limetorrents and sometimes tpb.party, but unless you're looking for something that was released in the past 6 months, chances are you're out of luck as far as scene releases are concerned due to torrents either not existing or having no seeders (which may as well be the same thing).

Curious to hear what the people in this community use to find scene releases. Torrents, usenet, vooodoo magick, I'll take anything at this point.

These stats capture 1 year of torrenting on a TrueNas scale machine I built as soon as fiber showed up on my street. It was my first ever proper rack mount server. I use this machine primarily for torrenting and jellyfin transcoding via an RTX 2080. The plan is to soon set it up for navidrome. Machine sits around 230 watts. Feel free to offer TrueNas scale tips.

Hi all I have a few TVs around the house and have previously used firestick and stremio setup. I do like stremio tbh but I am trying to decode/deamazon etc so I need an alternative option for the TVs. Not all are smart TVs and I like it that way so accept a small box attached is the cost.

I tend to basically use stremio and cinema HD at a push., and a VPN app. A few uk tv catchup apps. I don’t need recording or storage. I will likely move to some self hosting/serve in the next year.

I am trying to be conscious of my purchases and who I am buying, and also take steps to protect my privacy. I have a few to buy so budget needs to not be on the higher end.

Thanks in advance

since setting up a navidrome server, i've been working through our record collection trying to find online download codes to get digital copies of our music that we own (should have been done previously, but now is better than never)--and i've run into issues where the downloadable copies are no longer available screen shot of https://beggars.com/codes/ which show a patronizing message that says : "The Beggars Group vinyl download codes have been discontinued. It is possible that you have purchased a sealed copy of an old record with a download coupon inside, but due to a very low redemption rate, we stopped including the coupons years ago and we are no longer able to provide a download. Sorry about that" after seeing this i promptly sailed the high seas to acquire a flac copy of the album (and will continue to seed). similarly i've had records include codes to low quality mp3 downloads. i've also noticed a lot of albums purchased on bandcamp are no longer available for download.

i hope more people start moving to mp3 players or maaaybe selfhosting and that purchasing high quality music is a bit more normal in the coming years. but as i am still quite happy with bandcamp after being bought out, i don't have a lot of hope that it will be around forever as it had seen layoffs. fingers crossed though.

anyways, go to shows, support your local band, cancel your subscriptions, and if you can't buy (due to lack of funds, or availability) download and seed.

Still, the bandwidth is awful for the price. I can switch to a way faster plan with another provider (plus a VPN) for a smaller price. Which $10 VPN with open ports would you recommend?

Couldn't find any info on how long the sign-ups are open for, but it looks like they might've been open for a while now judging by the date of this Reddit post:

A decade and a half on from the Pirate Bay trial, the winds have begun to shift. On an unusually warm summer’s day, I sit with fellow film critics by the old city harbour, once a haven for merchants and, rumour has it, smugglers. Cold bigstrongs in hand (that’s what they call pints up here), they start venting about the “enshittification” of streaming – enshittification being the process by which platforms degrade their services and ultimately die in the pursuit of profit. Netflix now costs upwards of 199 SEK (£15), and you need more and more subscriptions to watch the same shows you used to find in one place. Most platforms now offer plans that, despite the fee, force advertisements on subscribers. Regional restrictions often compel users to use VPNs to access the full selection of available content. The average European household now spends close to €700 (£600) a year on three or more VOD subscriptions. People pay more and get less.

According to London‑based piracy monitoring and content‑protection firm MUSO, unlicensed streaming is the predominant source of TV and film piracy, accounting for 96% in 2023. Piracy reached a low in 2020, with 130bn website visits. But by 2024 that number had risen to 216bn. In Sweden, 25% of people surveyed reported pirating in 2024, a trend mostly driven by those aged 15 to 24. Piracy is back, just sailing under a different flag.

Now I don't know where to get music anymore.

Is torrent the only way to go now for books? Click to download was so easy.
