On FreeBSD, since v12 came out, it is now recommended to use zfs everywhere, including on virtual machines. I don't know about linux.

My local cell tower is connected to the same street cabinet that my wired internet connection is connected to, and the speed of both of them is about the same.

My setup is: The nextcloud server itself - 4GB - I'm using Nginx instead of Apache Postgres server - 2GB - I use this instead of MariaDB/MySQL Redis server - 2GB Storage server - 32GB - I use this for storing the actual files, not the virtual machine images or database stores. Elasticsearch server - 4GB - this is optional, and I'm probably going to decommission it

All are running FreeBSD.

Performance is reasonably OK.

I have a set of shell / powershell scripts that I run post-install to configure everything. They are hosted on a local webserver, so it is just a one-line command to run the appropriate one.

PiHole can be configured to use DoH, as can OpnSense and presumably other local DNS and router servers.

I have a 10gb switch and a gigabit router. Traffic between the two computers attached to the switch that actually support 10gbe is at 10gb, traffic from them to the one that is 2.5gb is 2.5gb, and traffic to the internet is about 55mb, because that is all my internet does.

I use Hyper-V on mine, and mostly run FreeBSD virtual machines + some Linux VMs. The actual Windows VMs I have are DNS controller, Exchange Server, and Remote Desktop. You are not going to be able to do any of those things on 1GB of RAM. My Exchange Server has 16GB RAM, DNS controller has 2GB, Remote Desktop has 32GB (could run on less depends what you want to do on it). There's 256GB of RAM in total on the computer.

Cis has been around long enough that the person who originally coined it is almost certainly no longer alive.
