Do gifs just not work? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)
submitted 8 months ago by TheCoolerMia to c/main

The uploaded image is just a test, its supposed to be my profile banner but with animated fire but when I try to upload it as my banner I get a timeout error (jerboa only shows a bit of that error and doesnt let me copy its text) and its always a broken image in previews

Also, the file is .gif but after uploading the link says .webm? Is that normal?

I've seen other people with animated banners and pfps but they were on other instances so I guess it might be an issue on this instance

I'm seeing it as a video which kind of sucks because I don't get a thumbnail/have to tap on it to "play" it.

Webm makes sense because it's a ton more efficient than gif but the UX is bizarre in this case. I'm browsing from the Infinity app.

[-] TheCoolerMia 3 points 8 months ago

huh yeah I just saw that it also looks like that for me when uploaded as a post :p

this is how it looks in a comment:

this is how it looks for me on desktop (Edge & Firefox) too

in some browsers u can right click > loop to automatically loop it how a gif is expected to work, but you still have to manually play it

It doesn't even seem to work on the webpage, in a browser. Probably because it's getting converted to a webm file?

At least on Liftoff I can see a link that opens the file. The web version doesn't even have that.

It works for me on voyager android

[-] neuracnu 4 points 8 months ago

Here’s what I see via Voyager on an iPhone 14 (using the lenmy.blahaj instance):

Not yet; v7.3.1 for this screenshot.

[-] aeharding@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

Ok it should be resolved when you upgrade!

[-] neuracnu 2 points 8 months ago

Confirmed, it works!

I see it as a video like the other commenter. I've had luck sharing gifs in threads by uploading to imgbb.com and then sharing the direct link using markdown, but I'm not sure if there's a way to do that with your profile banner.

You could have an animated gif in the bottom part of your profile, similar to how I have the snail pic on mine, but unfortunately that's not what you're looking for, right? You want the banner to be animated.

That's a really dope image, so I hope you can make it work.

[-] TheCoolerMia 1 points 8 months ago

the one that says "lento, pero avanzo."? it doesnt move for me :p

[-] LinkOpensChest_wav 2 points 8 months ago

No, but it would if it were an animated gif.

[-] TheCoolerMia 1 points 8 months ago

ohhh I think that doesnt work either, it's also broken there and in comments and stuff :< I showed that on a different comment on this post

[-] LinkOpensChest_wav 2 points 8 months ago

Ok look at my profile again. I couldn't use your file because, as you pointed out, it's been converted to a webm, which doesn't give you as much options. For example, if you try to reconvert the webm to gif, it will lose its transparency (because of some complicated reasons I can't explain since I'm not a graphics expert).

So I went and found a gif just to use as an example. You can upload your gif to imgbb.com and then get the direct image link. Then use the ![] (image-link-here.gif)

markdown without the space I added between the brackets and parentheses. That should make the gif immediately visible when someone visits your profile (although it wouldn't be "the banner" per se).

One thing to note is that if you're using Jerboa, gifs never start autoplaying, so they have to be clicked. Afaik there's no way around that yet, but you could put in a feature request. I actually had a request once to be able to zoom images more due to my bad eyesight, and the devs came through, so they do take requests seriously.

BTW I'm only going to leave that gif on my profile until you have a chance to look, so please let me know once you've seen it. The reason being I'm actually a cis man, and it wouldn't be right for me to pretend to be something else. I just grabbed that as an example.

[-] TheCoolerMia 3 points 8 months ago

Oh yup it works for me exactly like u said! but yeh I cant do that on my banner :< So yeah I guess the problem is that for some reason gifs r converted to webm in a way that breaks them

it wouldn't be right for me to pretend to be something else

hehe no problem X3 I think its fine as a supportive meme :3

[-] LinkOpensChest_wav 2 points 8 months ago

Looks like one of the admins is going to look into it for you, so if they're able to make the banner animated, then that will be great! If it's a Jerboa thing, then I could post a request, but it looks like people with other apps are having problems as well, so seems more like a Lemmy or instance level thing. I'll be looking forward to seeing if they can get it working, and then maybe I'll switch my banner to an animated gif as well.

hehe no problem X3 I think its fine as a supportive meme :3

You know what? You're right! I'll leave it up. I've never been too terribly attached to my gender in the first place :P

[-] TheCoolerMia 3 points 8 months ago

Yeah I hope the admins can figure it out, tyvm for the help! :3

You know what? You're right! I'll leave it up.

Hell yeah! :D

[-] LinkOpensChest_wav 2 points 8 months ago

Hold on, I'm gonna try something

[-] cowboycrustation 4 points 8 months ago

It's working as a gif should on my end. I'm using Voyager on an android.

[-] TheCoolerMia 2 points 8 months ago

huh thats interesting X3 maybe its just that Voyager fixes this issue itself?

[-] cowboycrustation 2 points 8 months ago

Somebody said they were using Voyager on IOS and it wasn't working. Could just be because I'm on android.
