Ah, Paradox. Your DLC policies always find new and interesting ways to disappoint.

Eh, I like their DLC policy. I'd rather pay a little every year or so and get a continually updated game than pay a lot every few years with no updates in the meantime. But that's only true for grand strategy games where a new release isn't likely to significantly change gameplay, just add flavor and whatnot.

The one change I'd make is making DLC free after a few years, so there's less to catch up on. That would reduce the barrier to entry for new players like subscriptions do, while still funding ongoing development by existing players who don't want to have a subscription.

I usually wait a year or so to get a discount, especially since it takes about that long for them to fix the bugs anyway.

Congratulations to Paradox for actively encouraging piracy of their games and DLCs. Very brave and bold move by them.

Yeah, clearly offering more ways to legitimately purchase their content is predatory… Stellaris is EIGHT years old at this point, it’s hard to find another single player game that’s still supported and updated as well. Every dlc also brings a free update, so all owners benefit.

This comment section is incredible.

The "DLC Subscription" is an ADDITIONAL OPTION, the ability to buy individual DLC as they come out is not changing.

Christ, some of you people have a hair trigger when it comes to calling for piracy and boycotts.

Horse armor, you have to speak up right away now.

You're being downvoted, but these are the same arguments people made back then. It starts small, and if it works, there's more and more of it.

That said, I'm subscribed to XBGP (for PC) because I've found that it's a fair bit cheaper for me than owning the games, and I rarely miss a game after I've played it. And if I do really want to play it later again, I buy it. Sometimes I wait for a big sale, and sometimes it's just a little sale.

I think $10/mo is ridiculous, considering XBGP for PC is the same price, but that's on them to figure that price point out.

I'm predicting this will be a dismal failure. I count about $200 in DLC currently, so if you bought them over time and played with them each individually (instead of being overwhelmed with them right away) you could probably have about the same spend over 2 years, but you'd own them.

And if you wait for a sale that subscription is horrible value.

There is no difference between the "Expansion Subscription" being offered now and "Season Passes" which have existed for more than a decade. Not sure where you got the idea that you're raising the alarm early, but you're a decade behind the curve.

Lmao most people here make sure that they don't let a single ounce of reason get in the way of their burning hatred for having to pay for things

[-] xhieron@lemmy.world 13 points 8 months ago

"Piracy is a service problem."

[-] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 8 points 8 months ago

Before people freak out this is just an option. You can still just buy the expansions.

Jesus fuck... They went from 70% as bad as EA to 250% as bad as EA. Welcome to my boycott list.

[-] Weslee@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

I wouldn't say they are as bad as EA but I also wouldn't say you shouldn't boycott them for their shitty ways either way

[-] DarkThoughts@fedia.io 2 points 8 months ago

Wait for EA to copy this for The Sims 5.

The fact that this Publisher is still floating around means they get enough revenue with their DLC policy.
