Hello from Taiwan, everyone! I haven't lived here for all that long but it's really a fantastic country. It has it's problems for sure but it's a great place to visit. Here are some other random things about Taiwan:

I recently had a medical issue that required 5 doctors visits, a blood test, an ultrasound and two weeks worth of medication. In total this cost me around $30 USD.

All citizens here can vote.

Taiwan was the first country in Asia to legalise same sex marriage.

People can and do regularly criticise their government, even on TV. Oh we can access the internet freely as well! CEOs also don't randomly disappear after speaking critically about the countries leadership.

Back when China shot a bunch of missiles into the sea around the country (fuck you, btw), the news was interviewing people asking them if they were worried and it was great. There was a fisherman they talked to and he just waved his and and said "whatever, we just don't fish there today".

It's a pretty strange and cool feeling to be able to "buy local" when purchasing laptops and electronics at least for me who lived in a country without much manufacturing beforehand.

So anyway, I don't really know what I'm trying to say except that Taiwan is an awesome country. Hopefully the geopolitical situation can improve for us one day. Hope you're all doing awesome wherever you are.

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

why be friendly to people who hate you

[-] fedfedfedd@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 year ago

Im sorry, I didnt knew you were the victim all along. I thought you were the one who is starting all the drama. My mistake. How can I make you feel better?

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

Nice of you to put words in my mouth, nowhere did I say I'm a victim. I just pointed out I don't have to be nice to you. Really gotta work on your troll game.

[-] TheMightyCanuck@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 year ago

"People hate me"

"I'm not a victim"

People tend to dislike boot lickers... even ones who can't see their visible victim complex 🤡

Good point. Why even engage you?

You have made clear your disdain for all Americans.

I'm not even looking for you but you're everywhere just provoking people while acting like you're persuasive. And your persuasive ability is to anger potential allies.

Is this the type of stuff you have to comment to be allowed access through the Great Firewall? Like what do you personally have to gain by your government forcibly taking over some territory?

Just part of the dance. We’ll sell Taiwan another couple billion dollars of weaponry on schedule as always.

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Of course, Americans would love to turn Taiwan into another Ukraine, but I doubt you'll get your ghoulish wish in the end.

[-] MrSpArkle@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 year ago

Taiwan doesn’t want China to invade, so they buy weapons from the US and other countries, and also have developed domestic missiles to strike at Chinese cities in case of invasion.

Don’t know what to tell you.

If anything Ukraine has hardened the Taiwanese stance, and showed them what an ounce of prevention is worth. I expect the next order of weapons to be even larger, because nobody actually wants another Ukraine.

If you think Taiwan has any chance of doing anything in a war scenario you are out high with copium in the stratosphere and you are becoming delirious, it would be one of the shortest wars of all time. Simply proposing this scenario is a clear indication of how deep rooted the industrial military complex propaganda of the US has invaded people in the first world. Hope the collapse of your empire doesn't hurt too much on your privileged ego.

[-] MrSpArkle@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago

Taiwan has at least 1 anti ship missile for every Chinese vessel and 1 anti air missile for every Chinese aircraft, and this just from US-supplied weaponry(I encourage you to read the Wikipedia article above). Taiwan also has hundreds of domestic missiles that can hit as far as Wuhan, and at least 50(and more coming) that can hit Beijing.

You say Taiwan can't do anything in a war, but this certainly seems like a lot of something. Propaganda or no, things tend to explode when you shoot missiles at them.

That said, certainly China would eventually succeed in invading Taiwan(barring foreign intervention), however China knows the cost of invasion and is not willing to pay it, so Taiwan keeps buying more weapons to ensure the price remains high for China.

Were it not the case, China would have invaded by now.

So instead China is doing slow diplomacy and hoping sentiment in the Taiwanese govt and people trend towards unification.

We'll just wait and see what happens in the next election in Taiwan won't we. DPP isn't exactly popular last I checked, and once US loses its puppet regime then the whole gig is up.

[-] mancy@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 year ago

once US loses its puppet regime then the whole gig is up

Were you born yesterday or something? DPP and KMT alternate the presidency like musical chairs, similar to the republicans vs democrats in the US. At least people in Taiwan can vote lol. That’s more than I can say about their angry neighbour. Sorry to be thriving I guess, I hope one day you’ll get the help you need and finally get over the fact that most Taiwanese people prefer freedom ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[-] gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

>Company owns the same 2 brands of shit flavoured soda
>You can choose between donkey's diarrhea and cow's bloody fecal matter

>Freedom

Being able to choose between two parties that represent the same group of people is not freedom, is just theatrics so that incredulous people like you can whine when people decide they don't want to do things as white western people told them to.

[-] mancy@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

You are so wise.

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

I see you haven't been following recent developments in politics in Taiwan. I recommend catching up.

[-] MrSpArkle@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

I like how you refer to the fact most Taiwanese people want to either retain the current situation or gain further independence as a "gig". Strong tankie vibes.

[-] macgyver@federation.red 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I mean, just go look at everyone of his posts, comments, and profile pic. Definite tankie

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

I like you pretend to speak for Taiwanese people without having a clue about internal politics of Taiwan and the effect of influence US there via things like NED. 🤡

[-] MrSpArkle@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

I’m just telling you what polls of the Taiwanese population are indicating, however you don’t seem at all interested in that, because you’d rather send in the tanks.

Turn Taiwan into another Ukraine as if it's the fault of the US that Russia invaded them (and by extension would be the fault of the US if China invaded Taiwan)? What a strange position to have...

I'm sure that Taiwanese people all want to be under CCP's rule instead, right? After imperialist Japanese colonisation, KMT dictatorship, and the fight for democracy, surely the majority would want to give that all up in exchange for dictatorship. That makes so much sense!

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

KMT started dialog officially repatriating in 2014 when US decided to run the sunflower movement that put DPP in place. DPP is currently crashing in the polls, and everybody expects KMT to get back in power at which point dialog will restart. KMT politicians have already flown to the mainland ahead of that. If you think people in Taiwan are stupid enough to let the west turn Taiwan into another Ukraine, then what else is there to tell you.

Meanwhile, not sure what this dictatorship you're yapping about is. Given that you don't even know what political system China has, your opinions on the subject of Taiwan can be safely discarded.

[-] falkerie71@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Lol. I guess being Taiwanese and reading first hand news and social media posts straight from China makes me less educated than you on the subject. There are multiple YouTube channels by Chinese people who had fled from China talking about their experiences with life under the CCP. Few also even have Chinese police force pressure their families back home to threaten them to come back to China. So I am very well aware of what China is and what they impose on their people. Safe to say that your opinion on Chinese politics can be disregarded.

And I don't even know where you got your poll data, cause KMT isn't even looking remotely good in the polls. This is a news site generally regarded as having a more Chinese bias, and even they were reporting that the DPP is winning in polls, not to mention it's also KMT's SECOND time nominating a mayor who is still in term to run for presidency. The last one lost against DPP and had his mayor title recalled by vote mind you. This time around it's Ko who is in better position to compete with the DPP. You know who also got invited and flew to China? Ko's team. So you saying everyone expects KMT to have a comeback is just talking out of your ass.
