To be clear, some really great community members have these names, but they're everywhere now. And with the right characters you can create some really annoying overlaps: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3790

Enough of them floating around now that I'll probably do a PR for my favorite client to filter them out.

You leave my display name alone.

[-] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 34 points 2 years ago

Hah, as I've said in other replies, your contributions greatly outweigh my annoyance. But it's still annoying (to me) 😉

Luckily I can contribute to my client to add a feature to hide display names, so I'll just do that.

Those are "display names". Some Lemmy clients have a setting to use the actual usernames instead of display names.

Agreed, the animated ones are also annoying IMO. Generally I block those users.

[-] lemann@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 2 years ago

TIL users could have animated usernames 😳 haven't seen one myself yet

Don't think I've seen animated, what client are you on?

Animated? I haven't seen anything like that. How on earth does that work?

[-] BananaOnionJuice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 years ago

You just update the display name very fast.

There are users I've blocked only due to having username like that. If you're that desperate to stand out I'll make sure it has the exact opposite effect.

[-] lemann@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 2 years ago

If you're that desperate to stand out

Very interesting take IMO.

I however see it as no different to setting a profile picture, a forum signature, or attaching an image inside a comment. It's there to be customized

If they get you annoyed to the extent that you're blocking users... have you considered switching to a Lemmy client that doesn't show display names?

[-] Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 14 points 2 years ago

I only use the browser version of the site which luckily allows me to hide profile pictures. Signatures aren't a thing here anyway. On forums it's a bit different I feel, as having a profile photo/signature is the norm rather than exception so users with those don't really stand out.

I don't mind blocking people for petty reasons. My blocklist has somewhere from 300 to 500 users I'd guess and I add few news ones every day. Same for communities. I got over the FOMO ages ago and though I'm sure I'll miss things I would've liked to see, the truth is I'm going to miss much of it anyway, so it doesn't matter. Especially since I don't even know what I'm missing out on. My reasoning behind this is that the only way to make social media tolerable is by heavily curating it.

I also have word filters for posts about Elon, Twitter, Trump, Sailor Moon etc. All this greatly increases the signal to noise ratio. Sometimes when I see a blocked user comment something I might log out to check what they said and more often than not my conclusion is that nothing of a value was lost.

I usually see Kolanki everywhere but not in this thread. Coincidence? 👀

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 15 points 2 years ago

It only now appeared on my feed.

I call shenanigans. I don't get 2 positive votes for Anything I write! It's all fart jokes and spelling corrections.

I don't see the issue. I don't mean I personally don't mind the names (which I don't), but even after reading your explanation I can't understand what the problem is.

Maybe I'm tired.

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 12 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Some characters that are permitted in the Display Name field can totally mangle the layout of the page on a website or even on an app. Like those letters that have a bunch of random noise attached to them that people like to use to symbolize glitchiness or Eldritch corruption.

I would hope that something like mine, which is just standard emojis, wouldn't do that since modern layouts account for those. I kind of agree that there should be some limit, just due to the fact some non-standard characters can totally break the site.

Oh good, I'm not the only one being annoyed

[-] Mothra@mander.xyz 11 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Yes I used to see lots when I used Jerboa, but not one since switching to Boost. It wasn't something that annoyed me at all, but I see your point, it's something that could be exploited I guess

Unpopular Opinion

Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
