Shit. I'm not even looking for a two bedroom. I want a studio for less than $1400.

[-] SnotFlickerman 28 points 10 months ago

They don't talk about one bedrooms in these statistics because it's all based on assuming you're going to fuck and make babies for God Economy.

[-] any_memes_necessary@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

the statistic for one bedrooms is almost as bad. In 93% of US counties, you can't afford a one bedroom on a minimum wage salary

[-] SnotFlickerman 6 points 10 months ago

Oh, I'm aware, it just always sticks in my craw as a person without kids how the subject is represented.

Find a way to move out of major city centers

[-] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 16 points 10 months ago

Outside of city centers in my state it's almost 20% less per hour. Sure, the housing is cheaper, but other goods cost the same. That's 20% less money to spend on groceries, cell phone bill, gas, car payment, etc. Also, moving out of the city, I would have to get a car again to get anywhere, instead of using the bus. It doesn't always make sense to just drop everything and move to the burbs.

[-] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 months ago

Yeah, it always depends on your field, there's also big cities that are cheaper than others, where I'm at housing in the fifth city by population is at least 50% cheaper than in the first city and salaries aren't that different.

[-] any_memes_necessary@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

this isn't about cities. there's not a single US state where you can afford a two bedroom on a full time minimum wage salary. And for 93% of US counties, you can't afford a one bedroom

[-] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

Money, services, and better job quality are all found in cities. Rural is physical labor and bad pay. It usually also smells like either a farm or chemicals for those rural jobs too.

Cities are where civilization grows.

[-] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

Spoken like someone who never got out of the city they live in.

You realise that there's many steps between major city centers and bum fuck nowhere, right?

In a town of around 10k you'll have everything you need to spend your whole life there if you want.

People like you act so smug towards the people who bring food to your table, extract the minerals necessary for you to have access to the internet, cut the wood used to build the furniture you've got... Cities don't exist without rural areas, rural areas continue sustaining themselves without cities.

[-] orrk@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

spoken like someone who never left the town of 10k

people like you act so smug to the people who make the tools or services you use. rural areas without cities are Bronze Age sustenance farming towns that die the second there is a bad harvest.

[-] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

I come from a city of over a million.

You clearly never went to a small town to say that their tools come from major city centers. They try to do everything by themselves without relying on the big cities to the point where it can be frustrating to see them work with a local welder or machinist instead of simply buying the premade tool they actually need.

How does a city of millions provide rural areas with food when there's a bad harvest exactly? Name one city of 100k or more that is self sustaining in food and doesn't do any long distance import for it.

I'll wait.

[-] orrk@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

and I grew up in about the middle of nowhere in a region that was agr and tourism (and was not in a family that works in "hospitality"), ad honestly, the place was dead as far as actually having possibility outside these two sectors, or anything to do but drink after work is done.

No food is produced by mega farmers relying on tools that they certainly aren't producing themselves, you have this strange fairy tale idea of what a farmer is and does.

lastly, and fittingly, you are also ignorant of how modern production works, no place is self-sufficient, don't delude yourself into this bullshit, all the fucking society is extremely interconnected, hell you don't even need a bad harvest, if that farming town runs out of diesel they aren't producing shit anymore

[-] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

What's funny about that is that I've got people close to me in the farming industry and let me tell you, I would put my faith in them before anyone from the city to be self sufficient.

Not all farms are mega farms and even the people working on mega farms have more than enough knowledge to grow food without all the tech they currently use. The reason they need it is to... Feed cities! If you only have hundreds of even thousands to feed you don't need fields that's are tens of thousands of acres.

Hell, look at poor countries, there's tons of self sufficient communities out there, none of them are urban. Why? Because food doesn't grow on concrete.

[-] orrk@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

yes, the "self suficent" communities that still rely on outside society to live at anything less than a Midevil standard of living

[-] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

Again, find me an example of a city that is self sufficient.

May the capitalists never gain access to the multiverse.

If anyone can find a way to hoard and separate infinite resources from infinite people, it's them.

Honestly that's why I'm rooting against successful space colonization. The rest of the universe doesn't need our greed disease to spread.

A violent revolution is unthinkable until the hour it is inevitable.

[-] Venat0r@lemmy.world 29 points 10 months ago

I think you misspelled studio apartment without any flat mates...

[-] any_memes_necessary@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago

that's just the statistic, but yeah. Can't afford that either. But people will tell you to "just move somewhere affordable" when the point is there isn't a single place in the US where you can afford a two-bed apartment on minimum wage – which should be a wage you can live on

[-] uriel238 4 points 10 months ago

Yes someplace affordable is what was called a Hoover house about a century ago, that is a cardboard house or stacks of used paint cans and dreams of a communist revolution.

Hoover and his industrialist buddies were livid over FDR's New Deal, not realizing it was a stopgap to let capitalism get its shit together.
