Finished Red Dead Redemption 2. The game finally caught my interest in the last 20-25%. Started to care about the story and some of the characters. It was also nice to play the epilogues, it connects the game with Red Dead Redemption 1. There are also some very cinematic moments in the game, enjoyed those too.

Overall, not a bad game, just not for me. I recall loving the first game when I played it on PS3, so maybe it's just me who has changed.

Didn't play too much of Splatoon Raiders, but I think I am nearing the end. Most of the may have been revealed, so there shouldn't be too much of the game left. Also, changed my main tank from Speed to Power. It has the better combination of gadgets that I want.

Played some more Final Fantasy XII - The Zodiac Age. I am finally in mid game. Got access to second license board, and spent over an hour agonizing over which combination of classes to go with, and that's when you can reset them (almost) anytime, imagine how long it would take me decide if the choices were permanent.

Happy with most of the combinations. One characters has Melee + Melee combination, most of the others are Melee + Magic, and 2 are Magic + Magic. So both set of parties have one pure mage, and two melee users with magic for healing or certain cases where it is required.

Currently at a boss which applies tons of debuff for my whole team, and I don't have any magic to dispel that. The last shopkeeper was selling Esuna (magic to remove all debuffs from a character) but I was tight on money and hadn't had a need for that yet, so didn't' buy it, will probably have to go back and get it. The boss isn't too difficult but when your characters can't even hit it, or do any damage, or case any spell, you can't really do anything no matter how easy the boss is otherwise.

Started Hogwarts Legacy on PS5. Objectively, the game is probably not as good as RDR2 (they are so different that we shouldn't even compare) but going from a slow game like that I instantly fell in love with character movement of Hogwarts Legacy and how fast everything is in the game. The game isn't bad, but I think I wouldn't have liked it as much I did if I hadn't played it right after RDR2. Not to mention as a Harry Potter fan it's great to see a modern game in Hogwarts and the wizarding world.

The game has it's bugs though. Around 4-5 hours in, it refused to start the next main mission, and turned out it's a known bug, you have to start this mission right after finishing the previous one, without doing anything else in-between, otherwise it has a chance of getting stuck. Only solutions are loading a previous save or restarting the game from start. I almost gave up then, cause while you can get to that mission in around an hour and half if you only do the main missions, I had spent hours exploring, solving puzzles and collecting stuff. Didn't want to do all that again.

Eventually decided to load a previous save from couple of hours ago and play again. Hope there isn't anything like that further in the game, I am saving before and after every main mission just to be safe though.

What about all of you? What have you been playing and/or plan to play?

Making slow progress in Splatoon Raiders. I only manage a 20 minute session or so at a time. Just upgraded up my base to level 2 and got a bunch of new upgrades to obtain. Wish the game opened up more missions though! The missions I have are exceeding my level meaning I have to replay some again, rather than pushing further in.

I’ve spent most of my time playing Terraria this week (on PC) though as I started a new playthrough. I started with an expert world before finding it too difficult and going back to normal.

I did also buy the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 upgrade pack on a whim. I’m in the middle of a new playthrough with that too but progress is going very slow. It’s getting the least of my playtime atm.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I didn't repeat any missions, but don't recall any major difference in level requirements. Level difference of 1-2 levels don't matter btw. Though as I am writing this, I do recall failing certain missions. It was mainly because of time running out, not dying, but you fail it either way. And since they let you keep the experience, I may have gotten a level or two that way.

It was only in the start though, one of the initial bosses. Haven't had to worry about time in quite a while.

[-] Harrk@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah I’m about 2 levels under what they’re giving me. I did try one but got stomped haha. But in fairness it was a pretty difficult one even at the right level.

It’s not really a complaint though. I’m enjoying it! I’d just love to have more optional side paths I guess.

I need to finish Mina the Hollower - I'm at the final boss (I think), and I'm gradually whittling away the boss' health bar but I'm guessing there'll be multiple phases...

I've also been playing through Botany Manor. From what I can tell, I don't have much left of the game. But that's not a bad thing - it's been charming throughout and sometimes a short but sweet experience is exactly what you're after.

FFXII has been on my Steam wishlist for a while - I should give that a go sometime. The battle system sounds fascinating!

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

How are you liking Mina the Hollower?

FFXII is pretty good, do give it a try!

[-] OmegaMouse@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago

Mina is great! Excellent combat and movement mechanics, great chiptune soundtrack as always from Yacht Club. I have found it more frustrating than Shovel Knight (by the same devs). I think partially because of the Dark Souls-esque loss of currency when you die. Dying feels like it has more of an impact in this compared to SK, and it's more of a time sink too (having to traverse back to a certain area and pick up items again).

That said, it's very satisfying when you do finally beat a boss. (I made some progress on that front yesterday, still a bit more to go though).

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I have played Shovel Knight and loved the game. Mina didn't attract me when I first saw it but with the praise it has been getting, plan to get it some day.

[-] OmegaMouse@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago

One thing I really loved about Shovel Knight was the DLC in which you played as different characters with abilities that completely changed the feel of the game. I hope they do something similar for Mina!

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, they released most of those characters after I had played the game so didn't play them, but have been meaning to go back and try them for some time now.

The company isn't in that great shape from what I can gather, so not sure if they can afford to do that this time around. Will be cool if they do it though.

[-] OmegaMouse@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago

Something about exploring the same areas with a fresh take on it really appealed to me. Plague Knight was my favourite!

I hadn't heard that about the company. I hope they've done well from Mina, because they're a really talented bunch of devs.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

I hadn’t heard that about the company. I hope they’ve done well from Mina, because they’re a really talented bunch of devs.

I am not sure of the current status but things had reached the point where Mina was their do or die game. Hopefully it was successful enough to help them stay afloat.

Still playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but I'm starting to slow down a bit. Replaying them, I think I prefer the first game, as I'm finding 2 a bit lacking.

I also restarted Tales of Arise (not on Switch tho as I already had it on PC) and I'm enjoying it quite bit. I remember trying it a couple of years ago and hating it, but returning to it now I'm realising I was completely misunderstanding how combat is supposed to work.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I would love to hear what you think of Tales of Arise as you progress in the game. Some of my friends (not big JRPG fans) had issues with pacing in the second half of the game, and ended up dropping the game.

[-] _Lory98_@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 20 hours ago

Your friends were right. The writing isn't great from the start and gets worse as it goes on, but towards the end the pacing gets unbearable. There's a few hours of uninteresting lore dumps, often for stuff you could have figured out on your own, occasionally interrupted by really annoying fights. I didn't have particularly high hopes for the story, but at some point it starts getting in the way.

I've reached the final dungeon and decided to give up. As @Phelpssan@lemmy.world mentioned, it's incredibly tedious, to the point where I tried lowering the difficulty to rush through it, but it still takes ages.

Overall I wouldn't recommend it. I was hoping the gameplay would redeem it, but it never really evolves, often getting worse when some enemies (including all bosses) disable the main mechanic. As I mentioned in my other comment, the party AI only makes it worse.

I've only played Vesperia out of other Tales games (I've played most of it, but dropped it close to the end). Compared to that, I found the skits in Arise to be really boring, as a lot of the times instead of characterizing the cast, they'll just repeat something from the last story cutscene adding nothing. Again, comparing to Vesperia, I found the characters to be either dull or unlikable due to this and how some things are handled in the story.

Speaking of the setting: without going into too much detail, I don't think the themes are handled well. Also the world feels weirdly small, most maps are just corridors and not particularly creative.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

I was hoping for the opposite reaction, so that I could tell them how they don't know what good games are 😀

Thanks for the review though. I still have a few Tales games to play before Arise, so will decide whether to play it or not then.

[-] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

I still have a few Tales games to play before Aris

My usual recommendation for Tales games is Graces F. Story is standard "power of friendship", but has the best battle gameplay in the series and a great cast with hilarious interactions (in particular in the "Lineage & Legacies" extended epilogue).

I also have to include some praise for Berseria, the gameplay is not as good (very "button mashy") but the cast is amazing, honestly one of the all-time best "band of misfits" teams in gaming.

[-] _Lory98_@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Could you go into more detail on the combat in Graces F? It looks similar to Vesperia which I mostly liked towards the end, after unlocking most stuff, although TP sometimes felt too limiting. I see Graces F has an artes gauge like Berseria and Arise.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Tales of Graces F was probably the first Tales game I played. It has been quite a while since I played it on PS3, but I don't think I played the Lineage & Legacies prologue, as I don't have the trophy for it. According to trophy guide: "After the main story, you will want to start Chapter 9: Lineage & Legacies from the Extras menu to complete the entire story." I apparently didn't do that.

I don't remember the story, just the main protagonist and some gameplay bits, so it won't be an issue to replay the game, but with so many games yet to play I doubt I'll go back to it anytime soon.

[-] _Lory98_@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 days ago

Sure I'll keep you updated. I think I just passed the midpoint and I'm stating to see some writing issues. The 4th area had a rather nonsensical scene which I feel was there just to prolong the chapter.

On the gameplay side, it's mostly enjoyable, although I've been using only Alphen and it might be getting a bit stale. I'm trying to switch to other characters but they feel a bit clunky. One thing I'm not enjoying at all are the boss fights. They play pretty differently from normal encounters, since you basically lose some mechanics and the party ai is really annoying as you can't set per-member strategies.

[-] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Some of my friends (not big JRPG fans) had issues with pacing in the second half of the game, and ended up dropping the game.

I'm a both a JRPG fan and and huge Tales fanboy (played all games, even the ones that never got officially localized) and I agree 100%. Game starts great but loses a lot of steam midway, plus it has the fairly common Tales issue of a rushed final act where you see obvious cuts due to time or budget constraints.

Also has one of the most boring final dungeons in recent JRPG history with a ton of incredibly annoying damage sponge enemies.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Thanks. I'll go in with proper expectations. Still have tons of other Tales games to play though, starting with Xillia.

[-] sdcSpade@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I finished Chapter 10 in Yoshi's Never-Ending Story, which brings us to the big question: Is there more? And the answer is...

...kinda. There are two more chapters but there's not really any new content (new enemies to research). Chapter 11 is basically about comparing several enemies in terms of size, speed and such. I haven't played Chapter 12 yet, but it's described as extra challenges. I don't know what that could possibly mean in a game where you can't die, but it's not been very interesting so far.

My big hope (when I was still clamoring for a single bonus level as a completion reward) was a final level that is basically Bowser Jr.'s room, so you can research him by basically playing with him. Oh, well, I got plenty to do instead!

In Fallout 3, Jimothy is back on track (and back on Earth) to continue the story. The finale of Mothership Zeta was kinda cool, but overall the novelty wore of fast.

And then I did what any reasonable person would do when they don't have as much gaming time as they would like: I started playing Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. I've been wanting to play this game for years, but there's always been another game in the franchise that was more important. But having finished Wilds and not being interested in the Expansion next year, now was the time to pull the trigger! And because recording Wilds messed up the rhythm I usually play Monster Hunter in, I decided to stream it live this time, which I have never done before. It gives me an excuse to just grind away as much as I want!

I've been using the Switch Axe for years, but I've known for a long time that I would try out the Charge Blade for this game because the Energy Blade skill is just so cool. It's been weird. When I looked up a tutorial video after my first session, I ended up with two pages of notes. There's just so much to this weapon that it felt like I was studying for an exam!

Going back to Old World Monster Hunter isn't easy, I need to get used to gathering spots being very random again. I can deal with the loss of many QoL changes but the equipment menus in particular are going to be the end of me! As an armor collector, not having the equipment pieces sorted by set is going to be just awful! I think I'll end up looking at armor mostly though my database app!

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Ah, so there are more! You were right.

Good look with MH GU. I think that was my first MH. No, wait, this is the 3DS one? I played the PSP one.

[-] sdcSpade@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Monster Hunter Generations was on the 3DS, Ultimate is on the Switch. It's the final 'old world' game.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Thanks for the info!

[-] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

so maybe it’s just me who has changed.

Always possible, but a lot of friends of mine said similar things about RDR2.

Playing Octopath Traveler II!

Played a lot of this game and the main conclusion is that I absolutely love the exploration and combat, but don't care much about the story.

I spent most of the week going around the world, opening new paths, killing monsters, unlocking jobs and robbing people of their belongings. Only started moving with the plot again yesterday and I'm massively overleveled (30-40 when the current story quests are 15-18), which helps make these parts go fast.

Also did my first few "Crossed Paths" chapters, and they're quite good, but it's sad they only cover 4 "pairs" of characters. Would definitely enjoy seeing more combinations in future games.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Always possible, but a lot of friends of mine said similar things about RDR2.

Yeah, maybe I just didn't care about game news / community much back then, cause I only heard massive praise for RDR2.

OT 2 sounds interesting. Still not sure if it's for me, maybe I'll just have to pick it up on sale some day and give it a try.

[-] emb@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

I've already mentioned it in other comments, but I just played back through Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Sometimes you just gotta fire up an old favorite. Had a file already at Tower of Hera, so just picked it up from there. Thought I'd finish in two or three sessions, but decided to 100%, and took a couple more searching to cleanup the last few items. (My memory is rusty!)

I've normally just done dungeon by dungeon. But wanted go out of the way to do the sequence weird this time.

Mistakenly thought I could get around doing Dark Palace first. But after you get the hammer, the game's pretty open. Ended up going 1 > 4 > 6 > 3 > 5 > 2 > 7.

Finally figured out how to do the Ice Palace bomb jump, so it was fun to see that dungeon just become nothing. Next playthrough I'll try to learn the setup for the hammer bomb jump maybe. And I'd like to eventually try casual speedruns (maybe just up to Dark World at first.) And and and I kinda want to take randomizer for a spin at some point.

Other games to play and things to do, but that's what I had fun revisiting this week, anyway.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Interesting. I have only finished it once, and I think I used some help from a guide, mainly where to go for the next dungeon.

Other games to play and things to do, but that’s what I had fun revisiting this week, anyway.

Sometimes it nice to revisit something you love, instead of trying something new.

[-] CaptnKarisma@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 days ago

Three Kingdoms Total War, harder to time to game but I tend to be able to buy at a discount as I might play a game years after release.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I have never played any Total War, should fix that some day.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I remember hearing great things about it. Would love to hear how you are liking it.

[-] bowsertattoo@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

I played the whole thing last week. It was incredible. I love the native perspective on the Western genre. the multiculturalism gives it a bit of a Game-of-Thrones esque fantasy vibe. The combat reminds me a little of FTL, and the minimalist aesthetic was very Hyperlight Drifter. Those are two of my favorite games so that's high praise.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago
[-] bowsertattoo@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The free demo has a lot of content if you just wanna check out the combat and see the beginning of the story to see if it vibes with you. and it saves your game so anything you do in the demo transfers to the game if you end up buying it

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Other than some exceptions, I am a very patient gamer. Its on my list, will eventually play it one day.

[-] PDFuego@aussie.zone 2 points 4 days ago

I've restarted Pokémon Legends Z-A, which I haven't played since completing my shiny dex 6 months ago. I spent the first 8 hours looking for a shiny Pancham to be my starter (luckily it appears in an area that's really easy to cheese) and now I have a full Dark type team.

While I liked the character customisation the first time as a girl, it's a lot harder to scrape a good looking outfit together as a boy. Here I am with Gristle

I never use the same species more than once, at least not as part of a new team (I'll recreate old "characters" in each game to add to a roster to mix up the endgame), so since that takes about 200 species off the table that makes building them a fun challenge, especially for single-type or gimmick teams. This one's Pangoro, Krookodile, Sableye, Sharpedo, Malamar & eventually Yveltal.

I'm also replaying Batman Arkham Asylum, possibly for the first time since Knight came out. I was devastated to learn even that one's already over a decade old. These games are masterpieces. The plan is to get 100% in all 4 of them over the next year or so, and I might go for all achievements while I'm at it because I'm missing a bunch of the challenge room stuff.

Then I've recently gotten into games like Quarantine Zone (decent) and That's Not My Neighbor (fantastic), that are all about attention to detail and thoroughness. QZ you're checking for symptoms of infection to let people into an evacuation camp during a zombie apocalypse and TNMN you're making sure doppelgangers don't get into an apartment building.

After beating both of those 100% I was waiting for Security 51 which came out a couple of days ago but I've been working too much to play it. It's like Papers Please but you're guarding an alien lab. My girlfriend can't believe I come home from my job as a security guard just to play security guard games. Contraband Police is on sale so I picked that up today too, it's more of the same but it scratches an itch.

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I never use the same species more than once, at least not as part of a new team

That's an interesting way to play, I guess that keeps the game fresh too. And I think you just made me realise my issue with these games, I usually stick with same "monsters", so should try to change that.

Arkham Asylum was probably my favourite Arkham game. City was good, but I liked Asylum better. Good luck with 100% though, some of those challenges can be annoying.

Never heard of Quarantine Zone / That's Not My Neighbor, but they look similar to Papers, Please in concept, loved that game, don't recall I ever finished it though. There are a few in my wishlist in the similar genre (one in fantasy setting, one was in sci-fi IIRC), will have to look them up. Another one that was released a few days ago on PS5, 1998: The Toll Keeper story. Do let me know of any good ones you find.
