I'm sure there are perfectly valid reasons for them to take full control of our discord accounts and this won't be abused.

At this point why won’t they just create an AI that mimics me across multiple social media platforms? If they’re stealing my data they should at least do the honors of posting for me

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

i actually exported my discord messages last year to do this for myself locally but it was too much effort

[-] bluesheep@sh.itjust.works 0 points 3 hours ago

bake a cake

"we're so quirky guys!!!!1!1!!!1!!"

Same vibe

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

at least the cake isn't a lie this time

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Man...

When Discord tightens the screws, it is going to be pain in a lot of communities.

Like, technically these permissions make sense now, but some day they will bite users in the butt.

[-] dan1101@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago

I'm just disappointed that people are still on Discord after all their global age verification crap.

[-] Dearth@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

What age verification? I haven't needed to verify my age. I heard the news but it seems that's its optional.

[-] dev_null@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

They never asked me to verify, so it doesn't seem mandatory

They profiled you based on your activity and algorithmically decided you probably weren't a kid

[-] dev_null@lemmy.ml 0 points 6 hours ago

Yeah, so nothing changed for me.

[-] cosmos8188@leminal.space 3 points 4 hours ago

Same aura as: "I'm white so they wount do anything to me"

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 11 hours ago

Hasn't happened to me yet do i don't care

[-] bagelberger@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

It likely already has, IIRC they assume age based on message content and account history, even if you haven't explicitly given them a birthdate

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 5 hours ago

I did also use that command in the browser that claimed to autoverify you for the age check.

[-] Bluedragon012@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Internet 3 is growing hungry.

[-] lath@piefed.social 46 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Can you do all of those on a battle net account? I would, in good faith, presume the plan is for the battle net app to act as a pseudo discord app and let you control everything on your discord account through it.

PS: I searched very hard for that good faith.

Edit: Know what? Discord ain't exactly known for its ethical behaviour, so fuck em.

Right? This is Mussolini trying to get admin permissions on the third Reich. I don't have a dog in this one.

[-] Pika@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

The intent is almost strictly for WoW, discord is advertising that it's to allow for merging of WoW clan chat and discord messages, I would assume via the discord client which is why it asks for so many intents. Screw that regardless though.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 4 points 1 day ago

presume the plan is for the battle net app to act as a pseudo discord app and let you control everything on your discord account through it.

Yeah, to me that sounds like what's going on. They're trying to implement a Discord client within their game, and to really do that successfully, it needs permissions to do all the Discord things.

[-] Pika@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 day ago

Some of these permissions I didn't even think was a possibility for discord integrations, holy cow.

[-] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Damn, if they're going to get all that up into my account the least they could do is bake me a cake. The nerve.

[-] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago
[-] sudo@lemmy.today 3 points 5 hours ago

I actually really hate the bullshit fluff they add to the permissions request. It's not cute, permissions should be concise and clear.

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago

Listen, Valve promised me a cake, and it turned out to be a lie.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 0 points 18 hours ago

Maybe this time [no cake] is the lie. I'm willing to bet a cake on the outcome

[-] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

I really just wanted a cake, but I guess that's the one thing it can't do.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

I would do anything for battle dot net, but I won't do that

[-] hellothere@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

Til battle.net still exists and didn't die with wc3.

[-] fushuan 2 points 17 hours ago

It's... The base app for all blizzard games, ofc it exists. I hate blizzard as much as the next guy but wow, the Diablo ripoffs, hearthstone and all the other crap is in there.

[-] GottaHaveFaith@fedia.io 1 points 17 hours ago

honestly I see only reasonable requests (plus selling your data if you didn't check that off). These look all like needed features to interact with friends between battle net and discord, they're a lot because discord made them "granular"

[-] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 15 hours ago

Oh, yeah, permission to manage a person's friends list in Discord and even block them is a totally "reasonable request".

/s

[-] GottaHaveFaith@fedia.io 1 points 15 hours ago

Guess how they can allow you to do that from battle net

[-] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 14 hours ago

And with those permissions they can also do it themselves whenever they see fit from their systems without asking you about it or informing you about it.

Mind you, the really juicy stuff that can be used to make money from is all the information about anything and everything you might be doing in Discord which can be sold to, amongst others, advertisers, rather than the active management stuff.

Somebody in Blizzard activelly decided that merelly letting you post in and read posts from Discord via Battle.Net wasn't enough and it's pretty valid to wonder if the decision path was "let's do a full Discord client in Battle.Net to make it even better for our customers and for that we need permissions for just about everything in Discord" or "let's get access to information about just about everything our customers do in Discord and we need to make a full Discord client in Battle.net to justify that".

I know that the answer I would bet on 2 decades ago before the enshittification era isn't the same I would bet on now.

[-] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 1 points 17 hours ago

Discord malware needs fewer permissions than this /s

[-] Godnroc@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I mean, it's trying to integrate itself into Discord at a high level, so much so that you can see if a friend is online to send them an invite or message without needing to open the app.

The only odd thing is to join servers in your behalf, but if you wanted to join a server without opening Discord directly, wouldn't it need that permission?

This doesn't seem that egregious, and the long list is quite informative of exactly what it can do.

[-] Ava@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago

Join servers on your behalf would be required to do something like "Join the World of Warcraft community server" or "join your guild's Discord server" buttons. Theoretically permanent links could work here, but Discord has made permanent linking harder to do for legitimate reasons, and it wouldn't work for smaller servers.

Email and third-party connections seem questionable. Why should Blizzard need to know my Discord account's email?

[-] Interstellar_1 1 points 17 hours ago

email would be to associate the account with an email. most services do this.

[-] too_high_for_this@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

Yeah, why is this even mildly infuriating? If anything, it's good to see transparency like this.

It's not saying the program will do any of those things without your input. It's just letting you know that your input in one program is using another programs data.

Imagine continuing to play Blizzard games after all they’ve done. Some gamers really are cucks for nostalgia

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 2 points 1 day ago

mods help i'm being cyberbullied :(

[-] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

Youre getting downvoted but Blizzard really has gone into the shitter since... Uhh... Wrath of the Lich King? Maybe like 2 weeks into Overwatch?

[-] richardisaguy@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

What do you mean, this is to improve user experience!

I'm happy not using blizzard or other Microsoft products.

I bet they'll try to buy discord soon.

[-] pivot_root@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

Why are some of them duplicated?

[-] cosmos8188@leminal.space 1 points 4 hours ago

Gotta water down the TOS list to the point where reading it will take a year. /s

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 4 points 23 hours ago

the scrolling screenshot function on my phone is... imperfect

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

What are the third party connections? This could literally be anything.
