In c/unpopularopinion, people just upvote the opinions the like, making them popular. There are barely any unpopular opinions there.

Rap music is the least aesthetically appealing music genre in general. I simply can't stand rap songs with a lot of swear words in lyrics, supporting street chaos and sex activity in lyrics, fast and high pitched vocals. Just not my style at all.

We need less beauty pageants and drag races.

Drag queens and Trans people are a way of life, and some of the talented, quirky and elegant individuals I've ever seen

RuPaul is a diva

People who use doordash and food delivery apps extensively, without a disability, are some lazy ass people, who deserve the shitty experience and high price it costs. Just go fucking get it yourself if you want it hot and fresh and not thrown on the ground.

Epstein didn’t kill himself.

There is a conspiracy. The fact that he was taken off suicide watch, nobody was watching him, and he was given the tools to kill himself was 100% deliberate. That’s the conspiracy.

I think most conspiracies are stupid, people stepping over $20 to pick up a dime. There are background actions driving events that they ignore but instead people look for UFOs, assassinations, or “second shooters” like they’ve got it all figured out.

It's not like it's hard to have someone approach him and say "if you don't do it yourself we'll do it but we'll make it hurt" or to threaten someone else with violence. Provided he actually cares if someone else gets hurt.

Are you ready for a super unpopular opinion? No holds barred? You asked for it:

Dogs suck. I don't like them. Glad if you do, please enjoy. But they slobber, shed, smell and are generally mostly a nuisence. They can be fun for brief periods, but they're way more work and hassle than they're worth. My brother is thinking of getting a big dog and I hope he doesn't because it would make me reluctant to spend a weekend at his place. I can't believe the number of people who seriously admit to loving their dogs more than their kids. I can't believe people consider themselves their pet's "parent". I can't believe how forcefully the online community backlashes to the idea of kids or judgemental of "ill-mannered" and neurodiverse kids, yet will happily say "it is never a dog's" fault, no matter how "bad" the dog is.

Cats can sometimes be ok, if they're not noisy and don't shed too much. But generally having animals in the house isn't great at all.

Thank you for your attention. Future Lemmings will look back at my comment history from unrelated threads and judge me for this, even though I've posted in the context of the current thread.

We need to bring back testing to vote. No, not the intentionally obtuse Jim Crow kind. Basic civics knowledge like what year it is, what are the branches of government, etc...

It's good in spirit, but "who won the 2020 election" would be the types of questions finding their way on there.

I enjoy cleaning the gross hair and gunk out from the shower drain, especially after I've moved into a new place. I am easily grossed out, so I find it stomach turning, but it feels so cathartic. The grossness is a part of that, I think. And then you have the immediate satisfaction of things draining much better.

I recently spent a year crashing in a friend's spare room, and I found myself weirdly satisfied that, being a household of 3, the shower drain would need cleaning much more often than when I lived alone. The fact that it's a gross chore that's rarely thought about until it starts getting quite bad means that I liked being able to handle this chore. Who else would be weird enough to enjoy the task, even as they're trying not to puke?

Human euthanasia should be legalized and normalized, both medically assisted suicide and euthanasia when the person is suffering but unable to make decisions for themselves. If it's an act of mercy to euthanize a pet who is suffering, then we should be able to have the same compassion for our fellow humans.

Ah, the natural fate of unpopular opinion communities.

The Þ dude is alright and Lemmy users have an irrational hatred for slightly-special characters. I wonder how many people are using automation to downvote every comment of his that contains a Þ, it's way too consistent accross instances and communities to be entirely organic.

The US should have compulsory military service, once the Dem Socialists are in charge.

No buying your way out, no exemptions unless you're in a vegetative state.

Everyone has to do it for 2 years.

It will build more generational solidarity than anyone realizes.

If the rich kid has to serve alongside the poor kids, maybe he'll get a sense of what real life is like, especially if he's the dude taking care of the toilets, or recycling milk containers.

That and making congress like jury duty, one 4 year term for everyone

[-] RBWells@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I agree with service for 2 years (after high school before college) but public service in general not just military.

We should try a worldwide intermediary period of 25 years where men would be barred from participating in politics. No mandates, no votes.

I feel like deep down we all know this:

The Devil’s fiddle solo in “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” was actually better than Johnny’s.

Edit, thanks to these responses I’m gaining a whole new appreciation for the musical and spiritual symbolism in this song.

There's a sweet spot. Unpopular opinions that get upvoted need to be trivial enough to not make anybody uncomfortable or angry.

Something like "Toilet paper orientation doesn't matter" is far more likely to be upvoted by somebody who disagrees with it than "Everything bad that happens to your children is your fault because you knew it was a possibility and had them anyway".

[-] Dicska@lemmy.world 40 points 5 days ago

Creating ANY kind of smoke should be banned in public. By public I don't mean just bus stops and trains and shit. Literally anywhere but maybe your house. And smoking indoors is even more disgusting. Smoking in your garden? Is there anyone living within ~20 feet? Forbidden. Smoke machines on concerts may have an exemption.

I also fucking had enough of people making fires every fucking time the weather gets too hot for me to keep my windows closed. Then my bedroom smells like the great fire of London and good luck having a good night's sleep like that.

Here's an unpopular opinion for people to upvote because we're supposed to upvote the opinion we think is unpopular:

Linux sucks more than the users want to admit and it's fans are the worst.

If you have to learn to program stuff to fix something in your OS, then it's not a good OS. This isn't the case for most modern Linux, but there's many examples of just having to learn all sorts of crap just to make it functional. With the other two mainstream OS they are plug and play. Lately they have done shitty choices with AI and everything so that's not as much of the case, but at least there you don't have to go in and fix the code to make something functional.

If Linux was that great, you wouldn't have to do any of that. I find it's a weird parallel to owning a crown vic, where you have to pile sandbags in the back so it'll drive in literally any snow, and then when you talk about it people say it's a skill issue because they are hardcore fans of a dumb cop car. If you have to do something special to make something functional, that's not a feature, that's a bug.

And then, ye gods, the Linux fans. I know of someone who was berated for almost an hour over not using Linux. The person getting yelled at was like, 7. They are the smug Internet atheists of the tech world. They won't shut up about Linux. Their solution to anyone looking up how to fix something with their computer is to uninstall everything and switch to Linux, even if it's unrelated. If someone has a criticism for Linux they have a meltdown. They feel smug and superior in their choice of OS, euphoric and enlightened with their own intelligence.

That being said I'm probably going to switch to Linux anyway. Because fuck the changes windows made.

Every conversation about the high incidence of SA experienced by women in our society devolves into whataboutism and scenarios where men were victims of false accusations or a bad divorce with accusations and the women being honest or discussing women’s trauma gets downvoted. I thought lemmy would be better but it’s really not

Many Lemmy users' (understandable) hatred of AI seems to have stunted their abilities to keep up with AI advancements. Some of them even sound like they're at least a year behind.

This is probably fine for most of them (sometimes I envy that, tbh), but some of them might be setting themselves to be blindsided.

BTW, for people who absolutely hate the idea of learning AI, but might have to: I get it. I did too. Maybe I can offer a weird perspective after being forced to cross over to the "dark side"...

Weird perspective from the other side

(This might not apply to most people, so I tucked it away here to take less space.)

Do you find it really satisfying to "dial in" something? Anything. Maybe dialing in your home espresso shots, calibrating a 3D printer you built or modded, setting up a guitar to get the action and intonation right, getting an old motorcycle's carburetors in sync, iteratively tweaking a recipe to perfection – whatever might scratch that itch for you.

If you're way into that kind of thing (and maybe pretty tech-oriented), you might actually enjoy building AI agent "skills" (basically instruction files for specific tasks). On the first run of a skill, it might get some things wrong. But as you run it through each round of evaluations and improvements, it gets better and better.

LLMs' results are probabilistic, not deterministic. So to build something on AI that actually works well, it needs to be "dialed in". It scratches that kind of itch, for me.

(BTW, if that ever starts to feel too easy: Try doing it with a small model running on your consumer-grade hardware 😈. That's hard mode)

Pedofiles, those that think and do not act, deserve more compassion by society. They can’t help the way they feel. Acting on it is obviously extremely harmful but they can’t even talk about it, even to therapists, for fear of persecution. The current methods of suppression are harmful and akin to conversion therapy for lgbt folks. We need to allow them to have a voice and access to non harmful animated CP with all consenting adult voice actors or AI. In out current society they are akin to trans people in the 1950s

they should eliminate the way jurors are selected, mostly because its poisoned fruit from the tree. because people are inconvenienced the moment they get the summons(ripping away from your jobs, and your income).

they should have a jury hiring selection instead, paid an actual wage of that state to be a juror, but have alot of them to prevent biases and its volunteering not "conscripted" by rotating between groups, because alot of retired people, or people who want to be on jurors never get CHOSEN. at the moment most jurors are biased asf in most cases, of the types they choose.

i also liked another countries method of jurors, having judges to determine the case and decide like a juror would instrad, because they know a layperson is going to be more biased regardless of how they are chosen in a juror pool.

People take the "extrovert" and "introvert" way to far. Instead of being an observation of behavior, they take it to extremes, try turning it into a "quirky" personality and then role-play it everywhere. All due to social media. They talk about it like people who believe in astrology talk about astrology. And then they pretend they're super happy, when they're actually miserable and depressed but refuse to think their "introvert" persona is the issue.
