If you watched the the show for Re zero you wouldn't see what I'm talking about but it extremely clear in the web novel that Subaru is just a trans woman.

I plan on making a detailed post about this later and even a youtube video but just as a small thing;

in the very first volume of the web novel Subaru rants about how he misses being a kid because of how feminine he was, his long hair made everyone treat him like a girl and he then explicitly says that this was before puberty ruined his life.

then later when we get his back story its explained that he started high school cross dressing felt like his "real self" for the first time and was happy until his voice outted him as cross dressing.

His tragic back story is literally male puberty.

Im saying this mostly because how Subaru is written becomes really sad when you read some of ther Q and A stuff the author is on record saying.

Tappie the author of re zero was be on record saying (and this is paraphrased "I wrote Emila to be naive and child like because to me childhood and innocence represents people being their true selves, after puberty people are forced to give up their true selves to fit into society and this goes doubly so for men its my to me the ultimate expression of being who you really are can only be experienced by women"

"Subaru cross dressing has nothing to do with them being gay, Cross dressing is a normal thing guys like doing Subaru is just really good at it, their wont be any lgbt relationships or characters in re zero"

Like I understand this might just be a thing where it sound way worse because this is not the original japanese but just the general idea is still crazy.

All this added with the fact that his two biggest projects are pretty on the nose representations of dysphoria especially VIVI and them writting only female protaganists outside of subaru who himself is constantly said to be more like his mom than his dad.

i dont know it just feels like so many japanese mangaka are have these half way to being trans characters

Even though I don’t disagree with this post’s content itself. The title made me think of this meme format:

That’s the girl who thinks XXX is a trans allegory

(freshly dug up from r/egg_irl)

I maybe should read the web novel. (But I still hate Subaru.)

But this probably says more about the author than Subaru.

There is a youtube series i watch called "the stickworld". That series uses text to represent speech

A character that first appeared like 6 years ago for a short time complaining that no one talks to her even though she has been in every single episode (she is completely invisible) has recently reappeared and became a more important character. When asked for a name, she couldnt give an answer because her parents didnt give her one because she was invisible and they couldnt figure out what gender she was. The person who asked for a name offered to give her one, then asking whether she wants a feminine, masculine, or neutral name. She said that she couldnt answer because she didnt know her gender and then spent the rest of the episode and the start of the next trying to figure out what her agab was. After she succeeded, the person offering a name said he would think about it and give her one later

After they defeated the evil alien monarch that trapped them on another planet and the person helping her came up with a name, she got kidnapped by the villain that helped them defeat the ruler

This had so many opportunities to be a story about a trans person

Ferris argyle is another good example from re: zero

Not sure if this counts, but I think Wayne's World would be even more awesome if Wayne was a butch lesbian instead of a dude.

when i was a kid I was a teenager i wondered why they didn't just make them a girl but remaru is pretty clearly ment to be non binery rep so its fine.

Or sexless. Slimes probably don’t have sexes. Rimuru seems to be quite content with being just a slime, the human is more performed for others. But Rimuru definitely is a fascinating reincarnation because of memory absorption and having the memories of multiple people

Luka from Stein's;Gate definitely fits the bill. She uses time travel to change her sex; the fact that the creators still don't consider her trans is genuinely upsetting.

[-] N0tTr0xy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 days ago

It is an old gay trope. It’s implied that Luka has a crush on the main character, but only explicitly said in the female timeline. The main character actually wondered if that was also the case for the Luka of his timeline, but never actually asked. It’s very likely that Luka only says that in order to be in a relationship with the main character. Like.. it’s a "if you could change one thing" question asked by the crush. Luka is undoubtedly obsesses with the main character. Wiki says that Luka always uses "Boku" (masculine I) even in the female timeline, but I played it only in English and don’t speak Japanese.

Now that you mention it. It reminds me of Ranma 1/2. Ranma is shown to be extremly happy being a woman multiple times during the story. while they dont show much joy being a guy they also dont show dislike towards it either.

Ranma could easily just been gender fluid but the author themselves has been on record saying they think a guy turning into a woman is gross and wrote ranma enjoying it in some scenes as comedy.

its a character who idenity its literally being rained in by the author's irl beliefs

guy turning into a woman is gross and wrote ranma enjoying it in some scenes as comedy.

In the new anime the dad says something similar to that. He made it clear that it’s horrific to watch the transformation. I only watched a few episodes, but the plot is unbearable to me. The only thing I liked in the first episodes was Akane (excluding reactions to Ranma)
