I'm torn between Sallet and Frog Mouth.

Sallet seems like the most practical with decent visibility level, not a ton but some neck protection.

Frog mouth just screams advanced night unkillable knight.

Inside of me there are two helms..

The aura from the great helm cannot be matched.

[-] Phunter@lemmy.zip 23 points 4 days ago

If someone in a Great Helm declared "None shall pass!" I must take it seriously.

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

The hounskull on the other hand...

[-] olafurp@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

If I had to choose for combat I'd pick frog-mouth. The angle of the armor really matters so the crossbow bolts bounce off or need to penetrate a more steel for same weight.

Can't beat the chad aura of the great helm though. Best helm for looksmaxxing when you have a chill garrison position.

[-] zikzak025@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I was about to come in here and say the same thing. The great helm is iconic, but the frogmouth is just both cool and practical.

[-] olafurp@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

I looked it up, frog-mouth sucks unless you're jousting. You can't see unless you're leaning forward, can't breathe properly etc. Turns out great helm is great.

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 29 points 4 days ago

Frog-mouth, both mysterious and otherworldly

[-] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 3 points 4 days ago

And unable to look down. Like, at all.

[-] Enkrod@feddit.org 7 points 4 days ago

It's a pure tournament helmet for jousting, the peculiar design is to direct splinters away from the tiny opening that juuuuust let's you see your opponent.

Thats what the squire is for

[-] Airfried@piefed.social 21 points 4 days ago

The Sallet is generally paired with the most badass armors but if we're only going by helmet looks, I'd go with the Frog-Mouth. It hits different.

[-] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

I’d go with the Frog-Mouth. It hits different.

It also gets hit different.

[-] Mpatch@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

Not gona lie seems awfully inconvenient in light rain shower.

"Oh my poor, poor valiant knight, tell me how did he parish. Like a lion fighting to his last breath? "

"Well you see my lady, there was this rain cloud. "

I have worn exactly half of these, and since I not that great at tournaments, I can say that KettleHat is the most fun for audience, you will definitely hear every bang like a church bell. The first is quite comfy (never heard of this name though). GreatHelm / Armet / Hounskull - damn bro, you can't see shit in those while having trouble breathing, and all that for the trade of security :/, no like, feels like you are just a target in the field. Your Bascinet here is extreemely open, it's a good helmet, but I would like to have some more face cover. Sallet, wore it once, many years ago, memories are fairly good.

Obviously Hounskull! Breathing room, full head and neck protection, plus you look like a mechahound!

[-] CommanderCloon@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago

The Sallet in this pic is great for breathability as well, there is open space between the helmet & the bevor (the jaw/neck protection)

[-] turtlesareneat@piefed.ca 3 points 4 days ago

Can fully smoke a J up there any you just look like a stylish incense burner

Frog mouth! Frog mouth!

[-] P1k1e@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

The Sallet just does it for me, not sure why

[-] Skyrmir@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

Because it's easier to breathe and more comfortable. It has less protection, but the majority of the time you're not being stabbed in the face.

Of course that one time you are being stabbed in the face, you're really going to have some regrets.

Is that Phoenician? This is in a museum in my town: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tumba_del_guerrero

They have entire grave of a Phoenician mercenary there.

Hounskull has you looking like Sam the Eagle

[-] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

Spangenhelm has that unmatched aura

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 days ago
[-] sangriaferret@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago

Looks downright evil. Sign me up.

How do you even see out of most of these? Doesn't an attacker just have to jauntily skip behind the helmet wearer and become effectively invisible?

[-] brad_troika@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Not very well but the closer a hole is to your eyes the more you can see out. ~~Breeding~~ Breathing holes on the mouth and nose can also help you see downwards. I think most medieval battles were fought in formations, your enemies were in front of you, if someone was allowed to "skip back behind you" something already went really wrong.

[-] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 9 points 4 days ago

Not very well if Kingdom Come Deliverance has taught me anything.

[-] ElReatonVaquer0@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

"Jesus Christ be praised!"

Me anytime I actually manage to hit my oponent

[-] fizzbang@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago
[-] Zizzy 9 points 4 days ago

Frogmouth. Its so goofy and cute

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 9 points 4 days ago

Spangenhelm.

[-] testaccount372920@piefed.zip 8 points 4 days ago

Great helm, it's a great helm, it's in the name, what more is there to say?

[-] TomasEkeli@programming.dev 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

If it's not the Sallet, what are you doing with your life? Get a grip.

Great Bascinet should have been an option, though. Solid choice.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 4 days ago

Kettle Hat, you can make soup in it if needed.

[-] Wrufieotnak@feddit.org 8 points 4 days ago

Always Great Helmet! Since I first saw it in Age of Empires 2 on the Teutonic knights.

But the variety makes them interesting.

[-] JargonWagon@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Lemme at em with the Hounskull, I'll peck put their eyes!

Nah but fr, Bascinet for me, I like to keep it casual.

[-] Zombie@feddit.uk 5 points 4 days ago

Only helms with facial hair are worthy.

[-] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 6 points 4 days ago

What are the pros and cons of each one of those?

The kettle hat will probably give the best compromise of safety and battlefield visibility. Id imagine it's what a normal foot soilder would wear.

I'd look cool af when I wear none of these in battle.

I'd die immediately of course, but everyone would agree I'm the flyest corpse.
