Incoming mandatory closed source government ID software for the tracking device you carry in your pocket.

[-] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 19 points 1 week ago

They literally already mooted that in the UK.

[-] TWeaK@lemmy.today 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Thankfully.

For now..

We'll see how Palantir turns out.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

"Mooted" means nearly the opposite in British English of what it does in American English. @DakRalter@thelemmy.club is saying they already started discussing it, which is a bad thing.

[-] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 8 points 1 week ago

Those two standards don't make sense, I'll create a third one to fix all shortcomings!

[-] grue@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Careful, if you continue that thought to its conclusion you're gonna end up with Esparanto or something.

[-] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

There's worse. There's better as well though.

[-] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 3 points 1 week ago

Yes, just to clarify, that's what I meant! It's on the table.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

"Tabling" means the opposite in American English too, BTW. To "table a motion" in the US means to take it off the table, LOL!

[-] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 2 points 1 week ago

I know, I did that on purpose ;)

[-] Trampampoline@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Cool, the fed can pay for it. Expect me to only turn it on when asked.

[-] TWeaK@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago

Turning it on only when you're using it doesn't stop it harvesting all your Bluetooth interaction data (like covid contact tracing). That's what Android Auto does with Ford cars - the car isn't just tracking you when you drive it and reporting back to Ford, it's tracking where you go with your phone based on all the Bluetooth devices you ping.

The best solution is to just not have it. Or, if you have to have it, have it on a spare device.

That's whats awesome about the Steam Deck in comparison to something like the Switch. I have taken my Deck completely apart (because my screen broke), and all i needed were some standard tools. You can put whatever OS you want on it, you can play whatever you want with it, you can replace parts as you see fit - mine is currently waiting for the moment i have to open it up the next time, i got myself a completely transparent body for it.

That makes me think: is there a LED controller somewhere in the Steam Deck?

[-] DeLancre@piefed.social 19 points 1 week ago

It especially cool that steam deck basically set the rules upon arrival:

  • Being cheap (not anymore tho) — it was two to three times cheaper than competitives
  • Providing best user experience with SteamOS — showing that UI matters on such devices
  • Being serviceable — you can easily fix or at least replace components

It's not like they was first company to present x86 handheld, but they was first one who was able to take off. I bought asus rog ally year ago (with z1extreme) and I already swapped os, nvme and sticks in it, battery will be next, cause in this model it abysmally small. And I can bet if not for stream deck, even if asus would release rog ally, it would cost x2 and repairability would basically none existent. And chance are it would have problems with linux (like their rog ally xbox version)

[-] Sabata11792@ani.social 3 points 1 week ago

I replaced the battery on mine already. Only problem was that damn glue you got to melt.

[-] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 8 points 1 week ago

Yeah, i got myself the iFixit toolkit for the screen replacement, which comes with this nice heating pad you can warm up in the microwave to loosen the glue from both the screen and the battery. Still have it, it's now in my general toolkit, because there's always something glued down nowadays.

[-] Sabata11792@ani.social 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I used a heat gun, I was still afraid to over do it and blow up the battery. Other than that, easy fix with a knock off battery as the official ones were sold out.

[-] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 2 points 5 days ago

Yeah that's also the thing i like about the heating pad - it's really hard to overdo it, even if it takes a while for the heat to penetrate down to the glue. I experienced thermal runaway in a damaged LiIon battery once on my old phone (thought i could use leverage to remove the battery, but it shorted internally) - i was just fast enough to throw it in a bucket and place it on our tiled terrace and watched the fireworks.

I don't own my pets :(

Also, are my kids even mine?

[-] wizardfrag@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

You can definitely open them. Closing them again would be harder…

[-] nibbler@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 1 week ago

not that difficult, but some functionality might be lost.

Not to mention the now voided warranty.

my girlfriend who loves me more than anyone in the world, turned my cat into a sandwich

[-] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 week ago

At least she owns the cat now.

[-] bumblefumble@mander.xyz 7 points 1 week ago

Well you don't own your kids, they own themselves.

[-] Goodeye8@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago

Unless you're in favor of slavery you don't own your kids.

[-] not_IO 3 points 1 week ago

yea they have rights :/

[-] Abyssian@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

For sure. I'll discharge my firearm device wherever I want and pointed in whatever direction I choose. I'll run as much power as I choose through whatever antenna I want. I'll play the first 3 seconds of audio from a million tiktok videos back to back at full volume in public. I'll use my pervert glasses to record videos of little kids playing outside in public, then have Grok edit the videos so they look naked.

...hmm... wait. Idk, maybe sometimes rules ain't bad. But fuck Google trying to block installing shit.

[-] bamboo 20 points 1 week ago

Poor comparison. Each one of those actions directly affects other people unwillingly.

[-] Abyssian@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Comparison to what? The post literally says "my device, my rules" and includes government regulations in the things they disagree with. Most of those regulations exist entirely because without them people would use devices in ways that would directly impact others.

[-] bamboo 8 points 1 week ago

can't speak for the intent of the person who posted it in the screenshot, but based the listed entities, this seems focused on the push to control what software can be installed on a device and who can access content on those devices. Government regulations implies the Chat Control regulations in the EU
