I'm so sick of this

Is it 1984 yet

[-] RabbitBBQ@lemmy.world 22 points 9 hours ago

Remember just a few years ago, all the main tech companies and Government were gaslighting the shit out of everyone about the targeted advertising stuff? It's not listening to you! The ADs based on what you're talking about are just coincidental!

Maybe no one remembers this for some reason. Of course they just get away with all the lying

Fuck, is there something like a USB condom that allows image data only between usb-c monitors?

[-] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 56 minutes ago

The issue is, manufacturers are only going to get more and more insidious with this until they either have full unfettered control over what you are allowed to view on your own screen, or are stopped in a meaningful way by strong regulations.

HDMI and USB-C inputs can both potentially carry an Ethernet signal, bypassing a need for WiFi permissions.

Devices could look for and join hidden/ghost mesh networks from other complicit manufacturers devices without permission.

Device drivers could be bundled with software which will enable tracking through the connected machine.

Hell, we’re fast approaching the point that every TV could be equipped with a basic data SIM designed to directly phone home and act as a kill-switch once a device has been deemed EOL after its warranty expires.

I’m not saying that these are already in place just yet, but that we are well and truly oblivious, slowly simmering frogs.

The monitors arent pushing the software over USB. When Windows detects an LG monitor it installs the software. This is doesnt require the monitor to do anything other than identify itself as being LG.

[-] nevyn@slrpnk.net 5 points 14 hours ago

What if the tv can connect to public wifi? What if the tv has a sim in it? What if the tv has a microphone, and a camera in it, and what if they are on even when the tv is in standby? What if you walk into someone else's house, or into a business?

I think I remember one of the rabbit hole on went down was that one of the few ways to get a non smart TV that's still 65+ inches these days is if you bought a commercial TV for menus in drive through chains like McDonald's. So a lot of reaturants statistically you would be safe from the TV itself but you have that self order menu now which is way worse. Or just their security cameras feed into the same systems flock uses.

If its an average nonchain restaurant they probably use cheap smart TV ob the wall for sports. Even if they don't have any other bad survalience tech they'll probably have that.

Everytime I bring this up there is one person that reminds me there is a brand that does basic non smart TV I just don't remember the name or have ever looked into them.

I have an "ancient" 720p dumb TV and I refuse to get rid of it because of shit like this. My disabled eyes can't tell the difference between that and 4k anyways

[-] FoxAlive@lemmy.zip 3 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

When I'm at someone's house and the YouTube video kicks into 4k 60fps its noticeable.

Its almost too distracting when you're not used to it. When its gone I miss it for a day or two but ultimately wasn't the reason I enjoyed it.

I'll watch YouTube on my phone at 480p because I pretty much grew up on metered internet and it just feels wasteful. But I'm the type of guy to play at 1080p mid settings (uncapped distance and frames if possible tho) to give my PC a easy time. Even if have the media installed locally I'm going 720p tops because now storage is more important.

The only time I'll fully let myself enjoy high res high quality media is if its a physical form like a blue ray. Other than that in the back of my mind I'm always thinking about how ray tracing and crazy high rez is kind of a gimmick, and how I would rather have more frames or conserve my hardware.

Going to be so sad the day my 2014 TV dies. I guess I could just buy a big computer monitor? Hopefully not one of these ones though Jesus Christ. Do they make TV sized computer monitors? I don't even use the tv part of my tv anymore.

[-] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 4 points 9 hours ago

You don't have to connect your TV to the internet. I'm going to use my Steam Machine as a cable box, or if you're younger, a "Roku"

[-] Jimmycrackcrack@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 hours ago

That's true enough. I remember hearing something about some of them in some making even this difficult, like refusing to work with HDMI input without internet connection or looking for wifi networks it can connect to without your input either way but maybe I'm just being overly pessimistic about it. Been behind the times so long I'm not really sure what the state of things is. I'd heard stuff about buying commercial displays and then got a bit discouraged about the idea given their expense and relatively "worse" performance as a tv in general. I don't necessarily mind sticking with HD and nothing much better than the best 2014 had to offer but I'd feel a bit pissed at paying through the nose for it. It's also apparently near impossible to actually buy a commercial display as an individual consumer.

[-] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 1 points 38 minutes ago

Yeah, I'm currently rocking a hacked LG Web OS from 2019. But that bitch is about to be factory reset and have it's WiFi antenna removed. Trying to connect to random open access points sounds about right for shitty IoT devices...

I haven't heard of refusing an HDMI signal without WiFi. Sounds plausible for really low end TVs.

When I was shopping for a new monitor a while back I stayed away from "Smart" monitors with their own operation system. I'm connecting it to a computer, why would I spend an extra $600 when the exact same monitor without an operating system exists?

[-] Jimmycrackcrack@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 hours ago

I didn't know the smart disease had infected computer monitors too. Seems like a harder sell even for those unconcerned with privacy. What could it possibly do that the computer it's connected to wouldn't be used for? If it's a computer monitor it's usually physically installed in a space you set aside for computer related stuff so even if you wanted all the "smart" features of a smart tv you'd be unlikely to want them there .

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 2 points 10 hours ago

I thought dumb monitors cost more than smart TVs?

[-] 13igTyme@piefed.social 1 points 10 hours ago

Monitor and TVs are very different.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 hour ago

Yes. Usually TVs are cheaper because they record you and your usage habits and sell that data

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

Look! You can watch Netflix on this monitor!

Well, yes, there's a PC stuck on it, of course I can.

No, you can watch it without the PC!

Why would I want to use a monitor without a PC?

It's only half again as expensive! It's a steal!

[-] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 day ago

Tbf, you could probably actually stream Netflix at 4K on it since it gets limuted to something like 720p in the browser. But that's just because Netflix are bastards, not because of technical limits

[-] Iusedtobeanalien@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

Spherical bastards

Connecting your tv to the internet is a terrible idea and has been for years. If you have webos and must connect it for some reason root it, block all updates (they rarely include bug fixes, just make the UI more sluggish with increased advertising), and block all lg ad domains in your router.

||snu.lge.com^ ||su.lge.com^ ||su-ssl.lge.com^ ||snu-dev.lge.com^ ||su-dev.lge.com^ ||nsu.lge.com^

Are the domains to block, formatted for adguard.

Here's the Gamers Nexus report.

TechRadar is a shitty content mill that, in this case, basically just half-asses a summary of the GN video, embeds a few Reddit comments, and calls it ~~macaroni~~ journalism.
