Camera and photo quality were lacking then compared to now. Gotta work with what ya got!

I wish I could get back into my old myspace account. I bet there's some treasures there haha

[-] troybot@piefed.social 20 points 1 month ago

I have some bad news for you. MySpace changed ownership several times and the current owners did a botched server migration with no backup.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 month ago

I wouldn’t really have expected them to keep all that shit anyway.

[-] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

the noughties

You know, I’ve never heard it called that. I don’t like it. I always say the “oughts” or “early 2000’s”

[-] troybot@piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago

I think that's because The Guardian is a British news organization so random words have a different meaning. Nought is zero and cookies are biscuits.

The one on the left is an album cover and that style was very popular in the 2000s. Especially in cheesy sci-fi shows (looking at you Stargate Atlantis…)

The one on the right though, that’s just what cell phone and cheap digital camera pictures looked like when you posted them on MySpace.

[-] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 39 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I think you're left/right ~~confused~~ good at. The left one is the cover of the Evanescence album Fallen from 2003. The one on the right is Boxxy.

I was there Gandalf.

Man, what happened to that girl? Hope she's doing okay, former internet stardom can be tough

[-] CallMeButtLove@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I seem to recall she hosted some web show for at least a while, but not as her boxxy persona. She seemed well adjusted.

Whats a bit amusing is that abpit 10 years seperated Evanacence at their peak and Boxxy. These really are not even from the same "era".

[-] BlackVenom@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago

That's Boxxy, and you don't use that adjective for Boxxy. That's prob 480p early YouTube.

[-] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

I recognized her, but for the record most cheap digital cameras in the 2000s up to and including the original iPhone were VGA standard resolution which is 640x480. So everything was 480p back then.

Yeah 1.2 megapixel cameras were the norm for a bit. The processing power to stabilize and focus fix all our slight movements people don't think about now with newer phones all came through.

[-] untorquer@quokk.au 9 points 1 month ago

Stabilization, focus 🤣

You held that shit still and lived with infinite DOF

In wich hand do you wear your watch?

[-] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

I’m dyslexic… hang on I’ll fix it…

No worries, I guessed it was funny mistake, nothing else

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago

You wear your watch in your hand?

The files are in the computer.

“Re… Re-L!”

[-] Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Gah I miss this era of anime

[-] DeLancre@piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

There a couple really promising animes this season - another adoptation of "Ghost in the shell" and "Yani Neko" - anime about obsessed with smoking cat-girl. Both visually tiers above what you would usually see. And recent "frieren beyond journey's end" also quite good. I really hope it's not a "fluke" and a general direction where anime is headed, cause all that slop with cheap 3d about yet another isekaed character_name, kinda started to bother people - no one wants it.

Also, season 3 of "One punch man" with it's moving-png meme kinda hit the nerves of some people in charge, could also affect things.

These youths don't realize that's just what digital cameras looked like at the time, insta filters didn't exist!

This picture (not me) is better than most of the pictures I could get with a camera back then

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Hey everyone look what lifeinmultiplechoice looked like

[-] negativenull@piefed.world 42 points 1 month ago
[-] Duranie@literature.cafe 36 points 1 month ago

I saw Evanescence last week! (With Spiritbox and Nova Twins).

The level of goth in the audience across the generations made me happy 😁.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Don't forget the MySpace angle.

... duck face was a mistake though, jfc.

[-] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Don’t forget the MySpace angle.

What, like from the side?

[-] Schadrach@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 1 month ago

High angle, close up. Shows the face, exaggerates the chest, doesn't show much if anything below the cleavage. Also used to get referred to as the "fat girl angle" sometimes.

This style still rules imo

[-] OR3X@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago

Boxxy!! I named my new vehicle after her!

[-] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 16 points 1 month ago

The old fag war has resumed?

[-] TwinTitans@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago

It’s hot.

[-] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 month ago

Simple and effective

[-] cravl@slrpnk.net 18 points 1 month ago

This would be contrast, not exposure, no? High exposure would boost the lows too. Very erm ackchyually, I know.

[-] nullspace@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Kinda makes the face more anime, downplaying features like the nose.

[-] whereitsat@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 month ago

the second is what a webcam would look like with normal lighting. all these popular streamers/youtubers nowadays have production crews.

also, using two examples to make a point, one being an album cover with a particular aesthetic that was popular and has nothing to do with the second image.

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 month ago

Listen here, on behalf of goths, kindly fuck off

[-] kibiz0r@midwest.social 13 points 1 month ago

turning the exposure up

Sure, by using the definitely-existent photo settings on your Razr to change the output of your 0.001 megapixel camera (that turns the battery into a cooktop when the camera stays on for more than 3 seconds).

Or by using Photoshop CS3 after paying $800 or downloading [-Photosh0p-].mp3 (2).exe.rar through Limewire.

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 3 points 1 month ago

Who downloaded software (other than viruses) through Limewire? It was all (allegedly) The Pirate Bay over here, baby!

The woman who took my senior photos did this to them. It took me a while to understand what she was going for but we ended up retaking them ourselves before I ever saw that album art

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 7 points 1 month ago

That’s still kinda the case now though, right? Filters play with the exposure to hide imperfections.

[-] untorquer@quokk.au 5 points 1 month ago

Yeah but now we start up a diesel turbine generator and drain fresh water reserves to do it. Much more sophisticated!

[-] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago

The 90s' "manic pixie" thing was real AF. 😅

[-] roserose56@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

Bro, like today, same back then people were. Don't fucking judge them!
