What do you give someone who's about to leave on an international flight?

GUNS!

Fucking brilliant.

[-] kopasz7@sh.itjust.works 28 points 5 days ago

According to Péter Magyar's fb post every head of state and head of government received this. Some even unsuspectingly took it with them on the plane.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 3 points 5 days ago

If you put it in your checked bag, it's fine

Authoritarianism, state capitalism, dismantling of democracy, religious pandering, and gun giveaways? Is Turkiye doing a US speedrun?

[-] Humanius@lemmy.world 25 points 5 days ago

Turkey has been at it longer than the US has with Trump. I'd argue the US is doing a Turkey speedrun

[-] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 33 points 5 days ago

I mean I wouldn’t turn my nose up at a free revolver, seems rude

[-] P00ptart@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

If you know anything about Turkish firearms you wouldn't even trust a revolver from there.

[-] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 15 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I didn’t say I was gonna use it! But it’d still be cool to have

Edit: plus gift horses and all that

[-] UnrepentantAlgebra@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago

It's like they say in Turkey: don't look a gift gun in the barrel.

[-] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 5 points 5 days ago

See you get it!

[-] P00ptart@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

That's fair.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I'd probably modify it to remove the firing pin, maybe weld the barrel shut, and hang it on a wall

[-] MyDogLovesMe@lemmy.world 33 points 5 days ago

IRC, Turkey actually has some very talented custom gunsmiths. He might have been highlighting this in his giveaway.

[-] SirEDCaLot@lemmy.today 12 points 5 days ago

This whole situation is hilarious.
Giving a weapon as a gift to a head of state is an old tradition that goes back to presenting a sword in medieval times. Now Turkiye does it and the first comment half of them have is to promise they are having it neutered.

What has gone so wrong with our society that the idea that a head of state, a person who could kill thousands or millions with policy or with a pen, must promise he isn't keeping a 6 shot revolver?

Just thank them for the gift and put it on display somewhere. Jeez.

i wonder of his lordship, keeper of the full diaper and guardian of the covfefe, will turn his over to gsa and the national archives, since it belongs to the government and not him.

[-] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 17 points 5 days ago

I'm okay with him keeping this one. The black helicopters will descend on me if I come up with too specific of a scenario so I'll say it's about creating opportunities and leave it at that.

It seems like it has a chromey mouthfeel.

Knowing Erdogan, this could easily be inturpretted as a "KYS" message.

[-] notsosure@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

More like KMA.

[-] BurnedDonutHole@ani.social 13 points 5 days ago

I mean the whole NATO meeting was about how they will develop the military industrial complex and increase military spending. For that sense it's a very fitting gift if you asked me.

[-] newton@feddit.online 9 points 5 days ago

Hidden mic. and tracker included .

[-] stagen@feddit.dk 7 points 5 days ago

Can't tell if it's a creepy hidden message or a cultural thing. Either way it falls into the category of "wtf"

[-] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

That is a pretty dope gun though

[-] RamRabbit@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Yeah, I would fucking love one.

[-] SharkWeek 3 points 5 days ago

Yup, a 6" Colt Python (which is what the thumbnail looks like) would be my second choice of any gun to have for it's own enjoyment.

First choice would be a Smith & Wesson 357 6" Masterpiece ... I've shit one if those and oh my dog it was satisfying!

[-] Zirconium@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Should have given it to their kids instead

[-] uriel238 3 points 5 days ago

This totally feels like a signal or an inside joke.

[-] Bahnd@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Is this an Elvis refference?
