Carrots being orange by default is thanks to the Dutch. Fucking bastards.

[-] bryophile@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 month ago

Leave it to the Dutch to standardise your food until everything is mediocre

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Those God damn dastardly Dutch

[-] davel@lemmy.ml 49 points 1 month ago

Carrots (and corn) have come in a variety of colors since time immemorial.

[-] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 41 points 1 month ago

Carrots used to be purple originally.

[-] anothermember@feddit.uk 31 points 1 month ago

I just had purple carrots yesterday. Is there some controversy about them I don't know about?

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 27 points 1 month ago

Yes please I want my food looking like its grown in fae soil. My wife makes these purple potatoes that are magical.

[-] MeowerMisfit817@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

... really? I'm bad at getting sarcasm.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 23 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Purple potatoes are very real.

They're extra cool to make mashed potatoes, fries, or chips with.

[-] Admetus@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 month ago

More antioxidants and slower increase in blood sugar than ordinary potatoes.

[-] benjirenji@slrpnk.net 18 points 1 month ago

You never thought having the same standardized food throughout the year everywhere on the continent is actually weirder?

[-] TheMadCodger@piefed.social 15 points 1 month ago

Yeah, I already buy the tri-colored carrots, and the purple are my favs.

[-] howrar@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 month ago

Same price or cheaper? Then sure. Variety is good.

[-] Screen_Shatter@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

Purple is the old carrot. Orange is newer.

[-] syklemil@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 month ago

Yeah, my mom grows carrots in a variety of colours, not just the new orange one that's become so common. Also grows blue potatoes, purple beans and whatnot, because she has more fun with more colourful food.

Dark heirloom tomatoes are pretty neat too.

[-] mineralman@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 month ago

I have and they are delicious

[-] luthis@lemmy.nz 8 points 1 month ago

Fuck yeah. Multicoloured food is amazing

[-] Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org 8 points 1 month ago

Yeah, my daughter loves purple color. So making mashed potatoes and adding in purple carrots would be kinda nice.

[-] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 5 points 1 month ago

You could use purple potatoes. Or Aussie sweet potatoes, which are orange.

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@anarchist.nexus 8 points 1 month ago

Imagine actually shopping for carrots 🤣

This post was brought to you by Texture Issues Gang 💪

[-] purplemonkeymad@programming.dev 5 points 1 month ago

Which way? For me cooked carrots are horrific just like mushrooms. Good raws are super nice and crunchy.

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@anarchist.nexus 2 points 1 month ago

The texture issue is with cooked carrots. However, I also don't like how carrots taste. Fresh fruits and vegetables in general, actually. Literally the fresher they are, the more they taste like themselves, so I'm one of the only people alive who prefers vegetables from fast food places 🙃

mushrooms

I feel you on the mushroom texture, but still, cooked mushrooms are my favorite """vegetable""" by a country mile. Like the texture sucks, but it's a savory vegetable. It's the cool vegetable. The rest "taste like veggies" to me. 🤮 Like I really owe mushrooms an apology for not eating them for the first half of my life.

[-] purplemonkeymad@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago

Wow yea that is a frustrating position to be in. When you have a taste that is physically unpleasant, it really makes it inedible. Worse if others can't taste it, as I feel half don't believe it could taste different.

[-] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I can imagine boiling carrots in a stew or in the beans. Or thoroughly steamed. Or roasted with potatoes

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@anarchist.nexus 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah, I like carrots in my soup.

[-] Nemo@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 month ago

Yes, I've eaten them many times.

[-] LordCrom@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

I grow carrots of multiple colors all year round. They honestly all taste the same.

[-] Infrapink@thebrainbin.org 6 points 1 month ago

I already did. The place I buy vegetables had purple carrots for a while, which cost more than orange carrots. I still bought them.

[-] 1Malayali@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago
[-] Sirius006@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago
[-] Infrapink@thebrainbin.org 4 points 1 month ago

Nice. They taste like orange carrots, but with a peppery kick.

[-] scott@lem.free.as 6 points 1 month ago
[-] SaraTonin@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

There’s a purple carrot in my fridge right now…

[-] lowleveldata@programming.dev 5 points 1 month ago

Why not? Always try new things. It's not like the grocer will recommend poisons anyway.

[-] original_reader@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago

Bless your heart.

[-] Carighan@piefed.world 5 points 1 month ago

I mean, green ketchup tastes exactly the same as red one, so I'm used to colour being somewhat meaningless. Same with clear cola.

I have grown orange, yellow, and purple carrots. They are all yummy.

Sure. I'll also accept purple and red sweet potatoes.

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 3 points 1 month ago

Purple carrot tastes great, has hints of parsley and lovage and also paints everything purple.

I used it mostly for chicken soup and it was great, also works good in other dishes.

[-] Contramuffin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Purple carrots have a better taste, in my opinion. Not perfectly interchangeable with the standard orange ones, so having the option for both would be nice

[-] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago

if i'm trying purple carrots its because the acid kicked in already so i wouldn't mind

[-] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 2 points 1 month ago
[-] MeowerMisfit817@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

What is down, doctor? ****

  • BugsBunny after purple carrots
[-] dsilverz@catodon.rocks 2 points 1 month ago

Oh, I remember that question from a questionnaire I answered not too long ago. Because of the lack of choices (these kinds of questionnaires are often too narrow when it comes down to the amount of choices one can make), and because I can see the situation being less about a literal, eatable carrot and more about "receptivity to unexpected, novel things", I picked the "I'll try the purple ones" option back when I answered it.

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I've had them. Well. We bought some and the very next day they were already limp and wet and grody. So maybe next batch will be better?

[-] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Are there any unsolved murders circling this grocer?

[-] fckreddit@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

You cannot fool me. There are no purple carrots. /s
