Working rotating shifts and seeing and being both in just the space of a few weeks is a new level of misery.

I get up at 0430 for work now, and people ask how I cope with the early start, but it's infinitely better than what I used to do!
Yeah fixed working hours are better, did a year of rotating between just 2 shifts and even that was better than rotating between 3 shits.
My circadian rhythm is a myth. Most people quit within few years due to some health related issues and those who have managed to handle it longer just become alcoholics to mask health issues.

Um no. In my experience, it's those who get up early that scare the crap out of zombies.
Fuck night shifts. I worked nights for 11 months. 2 weeks off wasn't enough time for me to readjust. There were a couple of weeks during winter where I didn't see sunlight at all.
But there's the issue. Don't readjust, embrace it, become the nightwalker. Sunlight is overated and burns us anyway, hisss

I’ve started going in to work early so I’m getting up at 4:30 every morning now. Last week I was texting a friend who hadn’t gone to bed yet while I was getting ready for work. He works a typical 9-5 office job from home so he probably wakes up pretty late by my standards, even still he was probably pretty tired that day at work. But that’s his norm, it’s crazy to me.

If they're anything like me, it would be heaven at first, then they'd slowly adjust back to normal. It's a circadian rhythm issue tied to sun levels
...no like live where you can match your circadian rhythm and work remotely in a place tha it lines up with. Most office/teaching jobs dont have a night shift.

I used to work a graveyard shift from 11pm to 6am. The first wave of morning workers were typically tradies in hi-viz, driving bright white vans. I used to think of them as a glowing army sent to scare off the walking dead clubbers who were still stumbling around.
I work 2300-0700. What is this seven hour shift you speak of?!
I used to work a shift that was 7pm-7am Thursday and Friday, then 11pm-7am Saturday and Sunday. I miss night shift.
When I switched from that job to one that was (IIRC) 7am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, it was a challenging week.
edit: actually I think it was 6am to 4pm. I don't exactly remember how the change went. I just remember developing a dependency on energy drinks and apologizing to my mentor for being sleepy.
It was more like 2230-0630 because of overlapping handover, but that's when I was officially on duty.

lol my first professional job had me on the overnight bus network (lovingly called the Vomit Comet) at 5 am. It was typically full of people who were drunk or high but they were tired so there was no trouble. Everyone minded their own business and we lived in peace.
I wish I could have said the same for the pre-game crowd when I was coming home from jobs that ended 9 pm or later.
It makes you feel so wasted being around sober people. Or maybe it's that being around other people who are wasted numbs you to it
I always felt that they are still wasted, just in another way. They're recently awake, on the way to work that for the vast majority isn't something they're excited about. They're drained and don't want to be there. I always thought I'd much rather choose my position in those moments than theirs. And I'm sure at least some see us (in this situation) and are envious.
Here's a question I thought of to ask people at parties: what is the time of night (or day I suppose) where you're just as likely to be staying up late as to be getting up early? In other words, sort of the midpoint between your latest bedtimes and earliest mornings. I think mine would be around 5 AM.

It was routinely lunchtime (if at all) back in my party days
5AM is spot on in my (foolish) experience when I was younger. I have many fun nights still barely going at 5AM and I also had jobs where I got up at 4:45AM to beat the traffic for a long commute.
IMO, it's between 4:00 and 4:30am is the cutoff between days.
The Witching Hour
About 5 pm for me. My shift is 10 pm till 6 am 5 days a week. And I try to stick to a 1 pm till 8 pm sleep schedule. But it is always interesting seeing people at 4-5 am and trying to guess whether they are knocking off or starting work.
My roommate works graveyard. I naturally wake up at 4am.
There's been many weird catch-up conversations in the kitchen when our paths cross lol

I’ve worked both shifts. Night is definitely less tightly wound, on average. Both are caffeinated, so that’s not it. Career night shift usually day sleep 8hrs so that’s not it either.
I don’t think this meme is talking about night shift, so much as partiers and such.
