Have I reached ā€œoldā€? I don’t understand any of this.

[-] abigscaryhobo@lemmy.world 49 points 1 month ago

The joke is it's "rags to riches" because she went from driving her mom's Porsche (a luxury sports car brand) to having her own special ordered Porsche. If they've got a Porsche the only rags they've seen are the ones they use so they don't have to touch poor people

[-] farmgineer@nord.pub 37 points 1 month ago

I appreciate it, but you re-explained the parts that I did understand. Who is this Jennie? Why does their parent have a porche? Who's the person commenting (in the event that it matters vs just some random internet person)./

[-] la508@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago

And what the fuck is "predebut"

[-] GEEXiES@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Since this seems to be about a singer (not that I knew, it's in the comments), I guess they refer to before their first album release or something like that.

[-] orenj@leminal.space 2 points 1 month ago

Ohhh... pre-debut. Not prede-but.

[-] bstix@feddit.dk 11 points 1 month ago

Jennie is a singer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jennie_(singer)

The person commenting is being sarcastic.

[-] abigscaryhobo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Honestly, it doesn't really matter, the joke works without knowing who it is. But it looks like this was the singer "Jennie" from a Korean Girl Group called Blackpink. A lot of these groups will swap out members to keep the fame and fans of the group but allow talent to move on/retire, looks like Jennie is a new member and she's doing so well because she was able to order her own Porsche. Yay for Jennie pulling herself up by her gold inlaid bootstraps.

[-] farmgineer@nord.pub 1 points 1 month ago

I was curious about the family connection. Was the mother already rich/famous? It implies the subject didn't buy her mom the first car, so I assume so. The wikipedia linked didn't have anything for a ctrl+f on 'mother'

[-] yopyop@sh.itjust.works 27 points 1 month ago

Building her Porsche ? Did she become a mechanic ?

[-] Obi@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 month ago

She means selecting the option package and the rims..

[-] 87Six@lemmy.zip 25 points 1 month ago

Ah yes "how do you do, fellow commoners"

[-] plutopos@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 month ago

Riches to riches

Jennie is deadass my BP bias but this fandom is a prison

[-] phar@lemmy.world 198 points 1 month ago

I...don't understand this sentence at all

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 102 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

"Jennie is my favorite member of BlackPink, but I dislike being a fan of this group because the fan culture is so toxic"

I did have to look up 'bias' to make sure I was using it right. Kpop fandom is... it's own little microcosm of slang and conceptual worldviews. Very weird phenomenon to look into, I highly recommend it.

[-] zewm@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago

Isn’t it just bronies that moved from Japan to Korea?

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 33 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Oh no, it's way bigger than the bronies ever were. BTS ARMY (the group name for the fans of the group BTS) (depending on source) either equals or exceeds the Swifties (taylor swift fans) in sheer numbers. It's nuts.

Edit: BTS alone is projected to be responsible for fully ~0.5% of SK's GDP

[-] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 10 points 1 month ago

It's much bigger and much more intense.

[-] Hoimo@ani.social 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

What do you think bronies are? That question makes so little sense to me, I don't even know where to start.

[-] zewm@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

4chan incels. You know the type. Anime, basements and body odor.

[-] Hoimo@ani.social 3 points 1 month ago

And they're bronies, you say? What were they doing in Japan?

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 month ago

Doing the dark lord's work šŸ«¶šŸ¼

I still have no idea what the fuck anyone is saying! I can't tell if something important is happening or if if this is just a conversation between 3 people who had massive strokes

[-] MadamLarp@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 month ago

Jennie (an Idol) is my Bias (Favourite Idol) from BP (the group names Blackpink), but this fandom (another word for fan base) is a prison (a place of holding prisoners, used here metaphorically)

[-] did_you_find_violets@lemmy.world 59 points 1 month ago

All the Blackpink members come from wealthy families. I don’t know why people keep trying to portray them as self-made🄓

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 27 points 1 month ago

Delusional fans who think their idols made it through sheer talent and work ethic. Sure, there are some who actually come from ordinary working-class families, but this particular group is far from it and one of the worst to use as an example.

[-] MadamLarp@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 month ago

ikrrrrr, and it’s not just BP, most k-pop stans wanna make their Biases look self made/like them, which is literally like so parasocial

[-] herrvogel@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

I thought I knew what the word bias meant but I'm not so sure anymore.

[-] Awesomematter@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

It’s just your fav member is your bias, not sure of the origin tho.

[-] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Trust me, I don't think @madamLarp@sh.itjust.works knows either.

[-] MadamLarp@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

it’s kpop stan ideology for your favourite idol of a group

[-] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 month ago
[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 29 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Translated:

"I agree wholeheartedly, and I'd further say that it's not a phenomenon limited to Blackpink; most of the superfans of any K-pop group will insist that they have a great deal in common with their favorite member of the group, and that said member got to their position of fame & fortune through hard work and talent alone [presumably without any unfair advantages like being born into wealth]. This results in an extremely one-sided relationship between performer and fans, where the fans feel a personal relationship with the performer where none could possibly exist"

[-] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 month ago
[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

... It's an information dense jargon.

[-] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 month ago

So much more efficient.

[-] MadamLarp@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

helpp I keep forgetting not everyone knows kpop stan terminology

[-] Starik@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

What is the main demographic of this fandom?

[-] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

I was gonna say, a porsche is crazy expensive in Asia

[-] Avicenna@programming.dev 8 points 1 month ago

Ah yes, such humble beginnings

[-] raptore39@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

Building? Does that refer to customizing the build?

[-] SharkWeek 3 points 1 month ago

I was going to say, neither looks like a classic Porsche, so the odds it was actually built are minimal
