It's "affected". "Effected" means "caused to happen" or "put into practice".

I'm pretty good with the obscure English rules, but this one trips me up almost every time

Mainly because the two things you just mentioned are almost identical imo

[-] Gladaed@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Still makes sense in this sentence to be fair, but our Madam probably meant affected.

I.e. anti LGBT protests had an effect on those people and they are being shouted out.

Why be pointlessly pedantic?

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 8 points 1 week ago

Because language is communication, and improperly used language is bad communication, so it's not pointless.

People misspell shit on this site all the time.

Do you call them out equally?

[-] NoSpotOfGround@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I do, yes. But not to "call them out", but to help them correct and improve. There was no malice in my correction.

[-] velma 2 points 1 week ago

Just a complete side-stepping of OP’s actual message to nitpick about one word.

Thanks for the support this month.

[-] NoSpotOfGround@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

If you see someone you support try to spread a message but their presentation is disheveled, do you just pretend you didn't see anything and let them embarrass themselves? Try to see past your anger. I'm not speaking with anger to you right now.

If your goal is to reduce embarrassment why not DM me? Multiple people saw your comment.

[-] NoSpotOfGround@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Because I've never DMed anyone here, and a comment is not as embarrassing as a title... I was expecting an "Ok, fixed, thx", and that would have been the end of it, as has happened in other threads. Instead we're getting this public trial that's awkward for everyone.

[-] velma 2 points 1 week ago

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

You don’t particularly like being called out publicly, do you?

[-] NoSpotOfGround@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

My initial comment was not an accusation or a "calling out". It was a friendly tap on the shoulder.

But you keep trying to steer this discussion onto an aggressive/accusatory tack, almost as if you want to perceive everything as some kind of a battle. That's not how I like to view things, and you're right, I don't like it.

[-] velma 2 points 1 week ago

You keep attributing aggressiveness and anger to my comments when I’m just being blunt.

You did publicly call out OP and didn’t have enough grace to actually contribute to the discussion at hand.

Now you know that if you’re actually trying to save someone public embarrassment, there are DMs you can utilize.

[-] velma 2 points 1 week ago

I think it’s more embarrassing to miss an opportunity to spread support in favor of correcting someone publicly.

It’s possible to do both, but you and others here chose not to.

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 1 points 1 week ago

Hmm, there's a difference between a simple misspellign and using the wrong word. Generally, a mispeling doesn't lead to confusion, the intended meaning is still clear because there's no collision with the meaning of another word.

[-] velma 2 points 1 week ago

Do you really think people are confused about what the post means?

Really?

[-] Gladaed@feddit.org 5 points 1 week ago

They're also peeps who are bothered by misuse of similar sound pronouns. E.g. using he instead of she really do bother some people. You might even be one of them!

Also it's quite the fun fact. Weirdly effects also can mean personal possession.

[-] velma 1 points 1 week ago

Respecting people’s personal choice for pronouns is in a bit of a different category than a misspelled word.

[-] Gladaed@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago

Is joke. I tried to be absurd for comedic effect.

[-] velma 1 points 1 week ago

Transphobes routinely cry about how mean people are to them when they misgender others. Just a heads up since I don’t think you are in that camp.

[-] Gladaed@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago

The joke in my head was about misgendering a transphobe/cis

"During the darkest days of the AIDS crisis, we buried our friends in the morning, we protested in the afternoon and we danced all night. The dance kept us in the fight because it was the dance we were fighting for. It didn't look like we were going to win then and we did. It doesn't feel like we're going to win now but we could. Keep fighting, keep dancing."

Happy pride! Keep dancing 💕

I love this thanks for sharing ❤️

Dan Savage is one of my favorite activists for the LGBT+ community. He writes a sex advice column in Seattle and I can’t recommend his writing enough!

Those who have been displaced...

[-] GraniteM@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I once saw someone post online "No one ever advanced the cause while in the closet" and I had a real hard time not making a whole thing about it

I SUPPORT LGBTQ+ RIGHTS! AND LGBTQ+ WRONGS!

[-] chattre 2 points 1 week ago

fuck yeah to the first. family is who you make it to be. ✌️🏳️‍⚧️❤️

*affected. Affect is the verb, effect is the noun. Pedantry aside, lovely sentiment.
