Homie wants to talk cool while we all watched him launch missiles at school busses. Let's not act like US Presidents haven't been war criminals for over a decade.

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 26 points 2 weeks ago

Since I was ten or so every president has crossed that line.

I wonder if everyone who calls Obama a war criminal also calls bin Laden a freedom fighter.

[-] arrow74@lemmy.zip 24 points 2 weeks ago

Man your mind is going to be absolutely blown when you learn two people can simultaneously be bad.

[-] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Or even that individuals can do good and bad things.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

No. Obama is war criminal and Ben Laden is a terrorist

Did Obama use military Ops that killed innocent people? Yes.

Is Obama still infinitely better as a president and human versus the Cheeto Chimp? Yes.

[-] Blibly@lemmy.world 47 points 2 weeks ago

Competence and responsibility mean nothing to republicans. Words mean nothing to them. They have no consistent beliefs and their lives are controlled by their erratic emotions and bigoted preconceptions.

Society cannot function while people like that have any control over anything, and in the USA they are disproportionately represented in our government.

[-] Objection@lemmy.ml 35 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It is honestly pretty funny, because Obama's Iran deal was too complicated a topic for the average American to understand or form an independent opinion on, so Trump came in and criticized it, painting it in oversimplified terms, and it worked because Americans are not an intellectual people (to put it mildly) and also didn't care.

Then he does this huge unforced error, sends gas prices skyrocketing, suddenly Americans actually start caring while Trump's messaging is completely unfocused and all over the place, and the old deal, previously a nuanced compromise, suddenly looks fantastic in comparison.

Yeah, Obama sucks, but you gotta appreciate the schadenfreude and karma of watching the right humiliate themselves and collapse their own narrative entirely by their own actions.

brother, we're so beyond this type of posting. congratulations: you've found a crumb of smugness amongst the wreckage of our present lives.

congratulations: you’ve found a crumb of smugness amongst the wreckage of our present lives.

Thank you. Without crumbs I'd starve.

I'm not sure when we moved beyond being able to make fun of reactionaries for creating problems for themselves, Wily Coyote style, but I'm not sure we should've left.

Your first paragraph makes the assumption that the American people are/were on board with what is happening with Iran. Trump never attempted to get the population to support his actions. It's deeply unpopular with his base and liberals alike.

With project 2025 they seized all levers of control. Checks and balances, if they ever existed, are all but gone. Seems the courts are the only thing left that produce any pushback and that is an intentionally slow process vs the move fast and break things actions of Trump.

He doesn't care about his approval ratings, and congress isn't doing their job. Huge amounts of aipac money are being pumped into all levels of government. Disinformation campaigns from 24/7 news stations keep the normies divided. Bot farms are further manipulating the online narrative using ai.

The whole thing is fucked, but it's a little more nuanced than the general population not understanding (or frankly wanting to understand) the JCPOA.

Our government has basically been overthrown, and other than protests or violence, there is nothing we can do to stop it until November. We don't have a viable mechanism to eject Trump in the meantime, and he's going to continue stacking the deck in his favor with gerrymandering and other sketchy shit until then.

Turns out money and power runs things, and that doesn't produce the best outcomes.

But I'm not talking about "the whole thing," I'm talking about this specific thing.

Obama pulled it off because Iran had significant geopolitical leverage and he wasn't dumb enough to confront them with direct escalatory military action (he still used Stuxnet) like Trump was.

He had no issues carpet bombing Afghanistan because they didn't have any military power that could oppose the USA.

Even for Trump, the real deviation from the standard Uncle Sam treatment was this year's crapshow. Last year's operation midnight hammer could have happened under any president for the past 3 decades and no one would've blinked an eye.

[-] Ophrys@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago

Also, "everyone" is conveniently ignoring that invading and bombing iran has been a bipartisan wet dream since the islamic revolution took place. I assume almost every american politician is probably gooning every day to the images of burned bodies tbh

What? Soft power? Negotiation? Breaking bread with our (fr)enemies? Nah, we don't do that here. Besides, how else are people going to know that we're big, tough, and strong? /s

"Everyone has a plan until they're punched in the face."

Corollary: Nobody has a plan when punching people in the face doesn't work.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

we used to be so bug and strong we didn't have to punch people in the face dammit

also i'm keeping it

Yes, that's because Obama had a fucking healthy brain and body.

Trump is demented and dying in front of us.

Great job, Republicans. You owned your own country and deteriorated the world (which you and everyone you love live in) in order to own the libs.

Fucking goddamn idiotic numbskulled dumbasses. Every fucking one of them. Absolutely braindead, worm-brained, self-destructive assholes. I genuinely hope history destroys every one of them.

I'll never forget, will you?

[-] FatVegan@leminal.space 8 points 2 weeks ago

He was smart enough to drone strike children and got americans to think he's a nice guy. Or americans are just dumb and or don't care

[-] coverupyourface@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 weeks ago

Republicans have absolutely no clue how the past few months damaged America's reputation in the world. Especially in Arabic countries and Europe the trust in America has gone from an already low level to absolute zero. Every country which isn't absolutely braindead tries to cut ties with the US as fast as possible. This is a loss of soft power which made the US dominate the world and might never be repairable even with a sane president. America's decline is accelerating because of that down the line, long after Trump has left this world.

[-] Eat_Your_Paisley@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago

Yes but he's a black democrat so it doesn't matter

[-] Forsho@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 weeks ago

Oh look, a war criminal is rubbing it on another war criminal about how he killed less children.

[-] Scrawny@reddthat.com 9 points 2 weeks ago

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

Too bad he didn't cause any meaningful change to the DNC and immediately dissappeared after his term letting the party flounder without a real direction. We're still feeling the effects of his lack of leadership. He was the disruption candidate that forgot to disrupt.

[-] papitoooo@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 weeks ago

What was he supposed to do? He gave us 8 years of competent leadership. One deserves retirement.

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Make meaningful change in the DNC. You know, like my comment said. Look what Trump did to the RNC. He completely reshaped that party. Obama left it floundering so he can make money giving speeches.

I was in the Finance Industry during the 2008 Crash and its aftermath.

The way Obama unconditionally saved the Asset Owners, refused to fully restore the Regulation of the Industry that had stopped crashes like that from happenning (until none other than Clinton repealed it) and made mainly workers pay for it all (which is why inequality has exploded since), was not "competent leadership".

Unless you think that when a leader of a nation sacrifices the many to save the few from their own massive fuck-up that's "competency".

And don't get me started on his droning campaign were so many civilians were killed that Obama changed the definition of Enemy Combatant to be all men ages 16 to 60, so that they didn't count as collateral casualties.

Obama was a veritable political songbird, his song beautiful and inspiring - great communicator, impeccable image management. What he was not was compentent, at least not at representing the interests of all, or even just most, of the citizens of the country he was president of.

(I suppose you could say that he was competent at some things, though not at being a President).

He's also been happy to help rehabilitate bush and is now being pro republicans staying around as a party.

Hell in office he was more than happy to continue bushs programs and agendas

Idk it irks me that he seems smug about it. Dude your country is fucking disintegrating...

[-] humanamerican@lemmy.zip 17 points 2 weeks ago

Obama doesn't care. He and his family are set for life, and if USA becomes to hostile toward them, they'll move to another NATO country and live like royalty.

[-] notwhoyouthink@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago

Idk about smug, but I do see where you’re coming from.

It’s entirely pointless and definitely irritating to keep hearing ‘when I was in charge we did things differently’ when the bar is as low as it is right now. It does not help, and clearly serves the ego of the speaker. To say as a leader that you did things ‘better’ back then is low hanging fruit and an incredibly poor and patronizing attempt at continuing your role as a leader. Waxing nostalgic about your time as leader does absolutely fuck all to help us out of this, which you of all people have more power than any of us to do. Otherwise this is what it is: lip service and an easy ‘gimme’ he thinks we side with him on.

Don’t get me wrong: he alone cannot pull us out of this, and I agree he indeed contributed to the eventuality we now call reality.
