yeah "refuses to lose weight", because they didn't know he was fat when they cast him.

and no, the show doesn't even try to come up with an explanation. why would it. he's fat, we know why people may be fat. like what the fuck was this idiot smoking when he watched the show that he thinks Hurley's weight is the main focus?

as someone who can't be bothered to watch Lost, what are some of the reasons given for him remaining fat?

[-] hesh@quokk.au 2 points 14 hours ago

One of if not the best TV show ever produced, don't listen to the haters. Check it out someday

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

yeah you can have criticisms of the show but most i hear is from motherfuckers who still think they died in the crash

[-] treesapx@lemmy.world 55 points 2 days ago

Asking Lost to give you answers is the reason none of us talk about Lost.

[-] 8oow3291d@feddit.dk 12 points 2 days ago

The opening text image did explicitly say that the writers did come up with explanations.

I recall something about him finding a case of candy bars in the plane's wreckage, and hiding them so he could have them all to himself.

They find an abandoned station full of nonperishable food supplies and he becomes the person in charge of supply rationing.

Also I think at one point they pull the "I tried, but I just can't seem to lose the weight" card and kinda give up.

But most importantly, if he lost a ton of weight those time travel episodes would be tough to track!

Meanwhile Huell Babineaux is slim and trim in Better Call Saul, massive in Breaking Bad, then back to slim and trim in the Better Call Saul scenes that take place after Breaking Bad.

Hurley was only on the island for 108 days before being rescued. As he said on the show "I'm a big guy, it's gonna be a while before I lose a few notches". 108 days isn't a massive amount of time.

In season two he did hoard some food from The Hatch for himself, but then when the 2nd food drop came he ultimately gave it all away (served as part of his character arc). There was never a 3rd drop of food in the show.

This is just a silly meme it's best not to judge the show from it. They don't "keep making up excuses".

The guy who played Sam in game of thrones said he would ask people, who pointed out tye similar plot hole with his character, something along the lines of "you know I don't actually live on the wall right?" I don't want to search for the clip to find the exact quote so sorry if that's too far off.

[-] JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyz 29 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Also something along "theres living dead, giants, dragons, magic, and the only thing you find unrealistic is someone not losing weight?"

[EDIT] To downvoters, it's in quote marks, because it's a quote.

[-] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Because there is no in-fiction reason why that would be the case. Dragons aren't realistic, but not losing weight is internally inconsistent with the rules of the world as presented to us.

John Snow regularly gives his best buddy his extra rolls because he has a gluten allergy.

Boom, explained.

[-] qarbone@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

And it would be good if they showed something like that on screen. Shows Jon as a kind friend, if a little too soft.

[-] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I don't have any context to know if that works here or not, but either way, relying on headcanon to explain the primary text is a hallmark of sloppy writing.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

He was fat in the original books.

[-] starik@lemmy.zip 75 points 3 days ago

He probably didn’t get paid millions for his first major gig

[-] SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world 59 points 2 days ago

Maybe not the first season or two. But he was a series regular for six seasons for what at the time was one of the most popular television shows, ever. His character had unique staying power in that show.

[-] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 59 points 2 days ago

You could say he lends that weight to the role

[-] slazer2au@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago

Fuck you, take my upvote.

[-] JennaR8r@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 2 days ago

Is this implying that everyone on those stranded-on-a-desert-island shows are just actors and they stay in hotels and live comfortably when the camera isn't on them?

[-] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 days ago

I just assumed The Skipper on Giligan's Island ate a lot of coconuts.

[-] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago

The Skipper was 60's fat, Hurley is 21st century fat.

The difference is about one entire person.

[-] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

Hah, good point.

[-] RamenJunkie@midwest.social 4 points 2 days ago

There were actually ten people on the Minnow but The Skipper is also a cannibal.

[-] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

Sadly, it was clear that The Skipper wasn't cool because he didn't eat the rich. Source: I was forced to watch this show on re-runs as a kid.

[-] sanbdra@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

The real mystery of Lost wasn’t the island, it was the writers explaining that 😭

[-] lessthanluigi@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 3 days ago

He is the only thing I remember about that show. Then again, I have never really watched it
