What an absolute embarrassing time to be an American. I apologize to the world on behalf of America for this fucking lunatic.

[-] GeriatricGambino@lemmy.world 80 points 4 months ago

I appreciate that you mean well, but apologies on behalf of America are just empty, worthless words. I know I have no use for it and can't imagine who would.

I have nothing against you personally, and the fact that you're not a Republican ghoul is already a lot to ask in today's Trump's America, but the rest of the world is well past caring about Americans futilely commenting about their sense of shame on the Internet.

the rest of the world is well past caring about Americans futilely commenting about their sense of shame on the Internet

I'm well past caring about the rest of the world tut-tutting and waiting for American wage slaves to solve an unprecedented global problem. If you're not out in the streets demanding your government take proactive sanctions and tangible actions you are at least as culpable as any average US dissident who is risking a shit ton more than you. What's your excuse?

Look at this fucking thread! Suddenly it "getting scary" because the demented old fuck wrote a grade-school level angry letter? It wasn't scary before because the troops were aimed at internal opposition and third world countries? Give me a fucking break...

[-] GeriatricGambino@lemmy.world 29 points 4 months ago

I'm sorry. What?

My excuse? I live in France buddy, do you think it's on me and my fellow compatriot wageslaves to protest our government in order to make them act against your government? We have our own struggles to contend with if you can believe it, and even if we had the time and energy, how is it our place to try to repair the shit show going on in your country. As to our leaders, the US has been trying to brazenly fuck us for the past year, almost on the daily now, don't you think if they could do more to defend themselves they would?

«As least as culpable» ? So, maybe more culpable? I don't even know how to qualify that type of thinking. Again, it's not my country, I only have to suffer the consequences of what's going on there like the rest of the world. I guess, sorry there's an ocean between us? My bad.

Tut-tutting?

The guy felt the need to apologise on behalf of the US. Except he doesn't speak on behalf of the US. I appreciate they're trying to be a good person but what am I supposed to do with it, is it supposed to make us feel better? Because to me it doesn't. Thanks but it's a meaningless gesture. Is it supposed to make them feel better? In which case, OK cool whatever. But I'm sorry my expressing a feeling of lassitude about American commentary adressed at us, Europeans and the reest of the world, upset you that much. I guess I'll make sure to do better next time and put in efforts in my spare time to try help you fix your country for you?

iF yOuR nOT dOiNg oUr JOb fOR uS ThEn i dONt waNt tO kNOw

So it's the wage slaves in other countries which must sort out your internal affairs instead?

One of my governments is already staunchly anti-Trump. The other one, hundreds of miles away, doesn't listen to my region, which is why we have two governments in the first place. Am I to travel all the way from the north of Scotland to London because Americans can't keep their house in order? Is the rest of the world meant to do similar?

Americans have loudly and proudly derided other countries for decades. Claiming they're the best at everything, more freedom, more money, only country to have touched the moon, fuck yeah, than the rest of the world. The Land of the Brave. The Land of the Free. Freedom™. Freedom to carry weaponry on the off chance you have a tyrannical government that needs overthrown.

And yet we're the ones being told off for getting annoyed that we all must suffer because of your internal politics?

Do you not think other parts of the world have their own struggles to deal with? Their own political campaigns for/against various things?

This is an American problem to be dealt with by Americans.

And this is why other people are done with apologies from Americans.

I should just save myself time and bookmark my previous post to link to. It's always the same two responses:

  1. "The entire world is descending into facism" (which means I don't have to do anything about the facism in my country for some reason).
  2. "Why aren't you fixing our mistake for us? You expect us to do something ourselves?!"
[-] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 19 points 4 months ago

apologizing is useless, organize, fight ICE in the streets, get into local politics and make sure no liberals democat gets into any position, only actual progressives with balls.

I'm an American and I'm kinda tired of hearing my countrymen apologize and say they are embarrassed. Were over a year into this and waaaay past the time to say that kinda shit. We shouldn't be embarrassed, we should feel ashamed and angry. And we shouldn't apologize, we should be actively finding ways to make a change no matter how small.

I know there are plenty of other Americans that probably lurk on communities like this so I'm mostly saying this to them. And the only reason I'm saying this is because about half the time I see other Americans apologize and say how embarassed they are it often seems like it's a way to say "see? I'm one of the good ones." None of us are the "good ones" anymore unless you are actively putting in the work. It doesn't matter if you didn't vote for him because he's still the president. People have died, continue to die, and will die in the future because of this man and he's doing all of it in our name. If Trump actually causes a global conflict with his bullshit we will not be blameless when the dust settles and our country will have to pay for this regardless of who you voted for.

[-] maudelix@lemmy.world 30 points 4 months ago

It’s unbelievable difficult when they have you at the throats financially. I don’t think you fully understand this until you in the middle of it. Being the primary provider for my daughter, I have basically two options. One is to work on a way out so she can have a better life (current plan) OR to risk that she will be an orphan by actively going against the government as everyone outside of US expects. If you have your own children, take a minute to really think if you okay with your child becoming an orphan or homeless, because that’s the reality here. Even posting this risks my employment, as freedom of speech is long gone. This is just my opinion, and does not reflect the opinion of my employer.

[-] TheGoldenV@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

That plus what little healthcare we have is tied to employment. If I didn’t have a family I’d be more aggressive. I do have a family and will defend them if it comes to it, but aside from protesting (didn’t do shit) and bitching at my representatives I’m out of viable ideas.

I’m open to suggestions that don’t end with me or mine dead.

Mr. Peace President: "I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace"

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 30 points 4 months ago

"Give me the Peace Prize or Greenland gets it" is Trumpism to it's core.

[-] callyral@pawb.social 51 points 4 months ago

Is that fucking for real?

Holy shit I just looked it up. It's an actual letter sent by the US president. Below is a GIF (tenor.com) expressing how I feel about this:

Mr. Boss from Smiling Friends: "We are so fucked."

I'm American born and raised and here's the truth: whether by incompetence or malice, the United States' politicians handed over governance duties to corporations and, for my entire life, have made choices in direct opposition to its stated values.

My government is not your friend, or friend to me or anyone I have ever met. Since at least Reagan, and indisputably since """Citizens United""" it is a vessel for the primarily the military industrial complex.

The world would be in a better place if the US held to its espoused values of democracy and liberty, but although I've known many citizens who take these to heart in their daily lives, and are honorable and loving people, and imagine themselves members of the global community, in practice our government stands on these principles only so far as they are profitable for the military industrial complex, and for billionaires.

They have stripped hollow our education system and trampled consumer protection at every turn. They have at multiple times operated illegal concentration camps, and served as inspiration to the nazis themselves. They have waged death for oil and resources, in our name. When we stand against them, they imprison and kill us.

The world is deeply ill-served by a globally influential United States until massive systemic change occurs. They must give us ranked choice voting. Curb the supreme court. Enshrine systemic balance in policy, not gentlemen's agreements. Until then, ice us the fuck out and save yourselves from our lunatic leadership.

I got a bit depressed when after reading it the only thing that seems weird is the capitalization of some words. Why "8 Wars PLUS"? Why "Total Control"? And why the PLUS? does it mean at least 8, maybe more? Isn't he sure how many wars he ended? Is it an acronym?

It's truly terrifying somebody with the reasoning skills and restrain of a toddler has access to nuclear weapons, but even worse that so many people still support him.

[-] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 23 points 4 months ago

Chapters? There will be whole college courses based on this shit, just like there are for Nazi Germany.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 16 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Oh, yeah, Trump is going to be the most studied president for the next 100 years, and NONE of it is going to be positive. A few MAGAs will write some books, but their MAGAs so they are either stupid or evil, and most of them can't write anyway, so they're books will be awful, and will get savaged by every other historian for the next century.

It's absolutely stunning that this is an official letter written by any government official, let alone a country's president. It reads worse than a 12-year-old's homework.

Not to mention completely false information included in the letter. What '8 PLUS' wars have you stopped? What do you mean there are no documents? The USA has literally signed an agreement with Denmark to waive all their claims to Greenland. And why are you blaming Norway's prime minister for you not getting a Nobel peace prize?

I could understand him declaring all this in a public speech. That's essentially what American politicians do for a living. However, stating such insane claims in a more-or-less private letter seems to suggest that he actually believes any of it. Which I guess is a possibility in the context of a senile, mentally deranged child predator...?

I'm just glad that when we finally elected Hitler, it was old, obviously psychotic Hitler and not 1936 Hitler.

Not that the next few years will be easy, but the fact that they pretty much immediately showed their hand as fascist bullies instead of dogwhistling for another 4 years and training up a protegé will make it so much easier to activate the cognitive dissonance of people who fell for that shit.

Like, there's almost no theological excuse for supporting Trump right now. I expect to see an attempt at some weird modern paganism similar to Hitler, because he is very obviously and daily going against the belief system of his base.
