I got roasted so hard by my last group when I tried to first time dm tyranny of dragons (to be fair, the first part of it is combat heavy and I didn't handle it as well as I could have) and it triggered my anxiety about it so hard that I dropped from the group and havent played in 5 years

[-] justdaveisfine@piefed.social 26 points 1 week ago

That actually sucks man, I'm sorry, that's not how a first time DM for any new system should be treated.

[-] kautau@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

Or even just a new DM in general. The whole thing is a group activity for mutual enjoyment. I ran a cyberpunk red campaign as the GM with 6 players for like a year, and it was my first time DM/GMing in general, and it was also a brand new system at the time. Everyone was very forgiving, lax and then serious in the story when it mattered. I certainly would have quit if people were assholes because my math wasn't there or I had to flip pages to figure out like fire damage calculations without having them bookmarked or whatever

I wont lie about still being a bit salty, especially since it was our 3rd round with new dm, the group had a few people (me as well) who wanted to dm. So we kinda took turns. I played through the good and bad of the other campaigns, dont care still had fun. I just dont know what changed when it was my turn.

[-] Redacted@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago

Fuck those people. You should try dming again its really fun

[-] Zagam@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago

Fuck em' find another group. Anyone that wants to give a DM shit isn't worth having at the table anyway.

[-] RedC@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

I feel like there's a difference between constructive criticism for a dm and outright shifting on their attempt. I feel the group did the latter

[-] psud@aussie.zone 2 points 6 days ago

I don't think there's even room for constructive criticism any time close to the event. You want to encourage anyone who wants to GM, not do anything that might dissuade them

[-] iceonfire1@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Oof that's a rough place to start. As published that campaign has major issues and relies heavily on the dm to identify them and change it to be playable.

[-] frostedtrailblazer@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

Anyone that bms their first time dm actually just sucks. I’m so sorry to hear you had such a bad experience :(

[-] RagnarokOnline@programming.dev 18 points 1 week ago

I’m in this meme and it maketh me morose

I have the same quest and I've talked to every villager I can find and while some of them respond positively to the "want to play D&D?" prompt, none of us have been able to solve the scheduling minigame 😔

[-] C8r9VwDUTeY3ZufQRYvq@sopuli.xyz 15 points 1 week ago

Good meme, needs more pixels. 7/10, would upvote as I scroll past again.

[-] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 week ago

I haven't played in 11 years 😭

How do I trojan horse Dnd into my game night? I'll dm 🥹

[-] burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 week ago

Invite new folks who want to play ttrpgs specifically, let the typical folks know that there will be new folks, and see who sticks around after the shoe drops.

[-] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 week ago

If you're willing to try pathfinder, you could go with Pathfinder Game Night: Dawn of the Frogs. It's a 3 session adventure that comes with everything you need to run a game: maps, pregenerated characters, a set of dice, some standees for you and the enemies, and an adventure book explaining the rules and the adventure you're on.

[-] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago

I haven't played Pathfinder before (I used to do ADND(2.PF) how expandable is it without official materials? (I guess it doesn't super matter, none of us have played a ttrpg in years)

[-] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

All of the rules are actually freely and officially available online here https://2e.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx including every monster officially released, usually with a picture. You'd probably be better off buying at least the core rulebooks to actually read, though.

Also, Dawn of the Frogs only has 4 pregenerated characters, so if you have more friends than that it might get a little complicated.

So to actually answer your question, it depends on how much work you want to do and what your definition of "official materials" is.

I'm in if you want a (mostly) noob. Could probably talk my partner into joining.

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago

My group fell apart because of scheduling issues. I miss it.

[-] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

In my 30 years experience playing, groups rarely fall apart due to scheduling. They fall apart because the game isn't compelling. People will make the time if they're enjoying it.

[-] psud@aussie.zone 1 points 6 days ago

Me and my group started a game, we played on Monday evenings so I created a mailing list and called it [Mondays] (it was the early 2000s, email was the best option). About 3 minutes after that one person becomes unavailable for all future Mondays, so the Mondays group met for years on Tuesdays

About half the people are different and the group went from five to ten to four over the years. Right now we meet on Fridays. I have a different group that meets on Mondays

[-] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Despite scheduling, you kept it together. Congratulations!

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

ehh we were pretty far into Avernus and then one of the players travelled for 3 months, and after that there were a bunch of scheduling conflicts and everyone started forgetting plot points and characters.

[-] nightwatch_admin@feddit.nl 10 points 1 week ago

Hello Compression Artifacts, my old friend.

[-] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 week ago

Oh, so you moved to a GOOD system. :p

[-] Grumpy404@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago

No im just lonely and dont like online games that much compared to in person.

[-] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

I meant like, PBTA or Daggerheart

[-] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

If it makes you feel better, I've been in this hobby nearly 30 years and I've had regular games for maybe 5 of them.

[-] justdaveisfine@piefed.social 9 points 1 week ago

I'm in the same boat. I also got rulebooks for Pathfinder 2E + Mutants and Masterminds in case I wanted to mix it up.

Now they all have a neat little spot on the shelf to collect dust.

[-] Grumpy404@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago

I would play more rpgs on tha table but i havent had a real group in a while nor do i know anyone willing to play, ive looked but no luck.

[-] punkibas@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

I was in the same boat. Have you tried solo roleplaying? It's not for everyone but I'm enjoying it a lot lately. Especially with the mythic gm emulator.

[-] psud@aussie.zone 2 points 6 days ago

[not op] I'm in it for the social, neither online (without open mics and video) nor solo is appealing

[-] Alaknar@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 week ago

How do I report OP for posting my personal details?

[-] tangonov@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

I still buy maps and assets for my 0 campaigns. One day...

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

There's some online services that connect people. It's really hit or miss, but could lead to a decent campaign for you.

[-] Dhar@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

Who are you and why are you me?

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 4 points 1 week ago

Hmu I like online games

[-] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 4 points 1 week ago

There might be meetups near you doing games. There's one here in NYC that's very friendly I've been to.

[-] PenguinMage@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Man that hurts... just bought more rulebooks for a campaign in the alien universe... in the off chance I could actually run it... ever...

Assuming you're an adult, there are a few Conan Exiles D&D roleplay servers and also some Neverwinter Nights 2 servers if you're looking to get into D&D but don't have anyone to play with. It's also a good place to meet people to play actual D&D on like roll20 or Tabletop Simulator or whatever.

But also, it seems like there are some people here who would probably play a game with you. You might have to run it though. It's much easier to find players than DMs.
