...and tanked a hit from the first cargo wagon.

Sounds like it's time to add logistics covering your whole rail network so that your bots can replace any other trains suffering the same fate. I think this is the only reasonable response to this event.

It's non-intuitive, but unless you are running really fast, your speed shouldn't really change the odds of a meteor hitting you.

I'm rusty on this, but I think some weird shit happens if you run close to the speed of light that could affect this.

Wait, in factorio or in actual life? If in life do you have anyplace that explains how that works?

[-] Zorque@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Meteors aren't generally aimed, so barring obstacles in its path, they'll hit just about anywhere.

I'm sure there's some higher or lower odds based on hemisphere and latitude and the typical trajectories of meteors before they get to the planet, as well as relative density of the atmosphere... but that's going to affect general areas, not specific ones. Whether or not you're moving and at what speed (unless it's fast enough to move between continents or something 🤪) won't matter as much.

Mind you, that's based entirely on assumption and no actual fact. I'm sure a person with actual accredited smarts would be able to dispute it effectively.

Your surface area doesn't decrease from you having a higher speed. In fact, because humans are quite vertical objects, moving them fast along the horizontal axis means they actually have a somewhat higher chance of crossing paths with something dropping vertically.

This is the same for rain, by the way. But since moving at a higher speed typically means you get to your destination sooner and spend less time outside of a house, it's still generally a good idea to go fast.

I was talking about real life, but I think factorio calculates damage in more than one physics iteration. If that's the case, your odds increase a very small bit by going faster, but a bit that is way more significant than the "indistinguishable from zero" you get in real life.

Oh, and just to add, your hits of being hit by a meteor on any single trip reduce the faster you move. But the trains are always out there, so their odds of being hit in a game-play don't change (or change very little).

Touhou players in shambles after reading this.

I never liked the space exploration meteors or sun flares or whatever there called. Felt just. Idk weird to me. Like didn't provide much content or skills or learning. Felt more of a trolling then anything especially ESPECIALLY when it it's on a rail away from my base and manually have to go fix it.

Otherwise great mod though. Getting the the secret ending I heard is incredibly hard

...they can fall to nauvis?

[-] Catpurple 14 points 1 week ago

It says Space Exploration, so I assume they mean the mod, not the Space Age DLC. The mod was designed to be much harder than the DLC, and among the new challenges were periodic meteor strikes and Coronal Mass Ejections, big lasers from space that could burn down whole forests and badly wreck your bases and outposts. Space Age lacks those features.

I remember you needed a defense cannon to deal with the meteors, though only in a certain range around the cannon, and a big, ridiculously power-hungry planetary shield... thing? to stop the CMEs.

If I remember correctly, SE existed for quite a while before SA was ever even announced. Last time I looked they weren't even compatible with each other.

[-] Giloron@programming.dev 2 points 5 days ago

Out so long they highered the developer and he helped make SA.

[-] SethranKada@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Huh, good to know. thanks!

[-] DScratch@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

I’d be upset

[-] SmokeyDope@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

Was this on nauvis? Ive never seen a meteor fall before

[-] brown567@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

It's the Space Exploration mod, not the Space Age DLC =)
