To be more precise, people here are more like themselves and don't use self-censorship, communicating like bots.

Ya know what type of shit Reddit is saying about lemmy?

Nothing at all.

And this will be the only time I find myself wishing lemmy were similar. Seriously, you people need to let this shit go.

[-] calmblue75@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago

That'll be difficult, because a number of lemmy users have been redditors before. On the other hand, number of lemmy users that could have migrated to reddit is nil, which is probably why redditors are not talking about lemmy or the fediverse as much.

[-] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Could also be because they don’t care. Lemmy acts like the bitter ex.

Yeah for fucks sakes lads

[-] Nangijala@feddit.dk 56 points 2 days ago

I self censor a ton on here, are you kidding me? I have blocked every news and politics related instance I could find and still, the instances that are left are filled with political brain rot from the most unhinged extremist black and white thinking leftists online.

The only reason I'm still here is because I have a small handful of instances that I actually enjoy frequenting, where people are trying to make a healthy environment to speak with one another and share thoughts and ideas that aren't always about politics.

The only true positive about Lemmy is that it isn't a corporate entity with carefully curated ads, algorithms and tons of bots. However, Lemmy is proof that the corporate model has trained us all so well over the past decade to think that being online is all about getting mad at politics and each other so we are basically perpetuating the bullshit trends they started like the brain dead lemmings we are.

To me Lemmy is no different than any other social media platform that thrives on hate, yet somehow thinks its unique and/or enlightened. It's a shame because there a lot of potential here to make something that unites people instead of continuing the echo chamber model that the big corporations have worked hard to put us all in because it earns them money to keep us angry with one another.

But whatever. All these "big thinkers" on here thinks their time is best spend screaming at each other and calling everyone they disagree with a fascist so who cares about trying to build a better online community? I'll keep blocking shit until I only have the productive instances left.

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

It’s a shame because there a lot of potential here to make something that unites people instead of continuing the echo chamber model that the big corporations have worked hard to put us all in because it earns them money to keep us angry with one another.

This enlightened centrism bs that pretends that "divide" is some simple concept that needs to be attacked by "both sides" is just either the absolute laziest way to sift through issues or purposefully malicious.

I’ll keep blocking shit until I only have the productive instances left.

Interesting that to you "productive" is quite literally the opposite of productive, and really appears to just mean places that agree with your enlightened centrism.

Lemmy is proof that the corporate model has trained us all so well over the past decade to think that being online is all about getting mad at politics and each other so we are basically perpetuating the bullshit trends they started like the brain dead lemmings we are.

This part right here is just a wild baseless theory, and sounds extremely privileged to think that discussing serious issues that are especially important right now means "being online is all about getting mad at politics and each other so we are basically perpetuating the bullshit trends they started like the brain dead lemmings we are."

Idk man some people myself included like discussing and/or arguing something. A lot of people argue impolitely or misrepresent points, but a huge portion of lemmy users have autism or other neurodivergence, so sometimes they're not good at picking up nuance or what the other person actually meant. Also, most people in general are tribal so I think what you're asking for might be impossible on an unrestricted platform.

I have had tons of actually good discussions on lemmy, I can link you some if you want, but it sounds like you're seeing people say "trump just broke 5 court orders and fired all the judges who disagreed with him, then illegaly sent the national guard to Oregon. This is fascism" and saying "you can't call everyone you don't like a fascist!!" Those at least fascist-leaning actions. Do I think it's actual fascism? No. But all of those actions are the dictionary definition of fascism, so if someone calls someone taking many fascist actions in succession a fascist... idk maybe hyperbole but not that extreme. It's like calling Bernie sanders a socialist. It's like well not really but I know what you mean.

[-] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Do I think it’s actual fascism? No. But all of those actions are the dictionary definition of fascism

Do you not notice any dissonance here?

[-] starelfsc2@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 hours ago

I'm not really sure, maybe it's just the extent or the amount of incompetence that makes it different to me. It's sort of like fascism-lite, because even if trump WANTS all trans people taken away / treated as undesirables and has caused a lot more people to hate them, he hasn't been able to enact "if you are trans you will be killed" like I would expect under fascism. I also don't feel like even the crazy maga people want the democratic party to not exist, they just want democrats to "stop being stupid."

I was listening to an expert on cults talk about trump and MAGA, and he said trump plays to the crowd rather than saying what he believes. For instance when he said "I hope you're all vaccinated " in Missouri i believe, the crowd booed him and he quickly changed to "you should have the freedom to choose." I think narcissistic con man fits everything he does more accurately than fascist, but still that's why when someone calls him a fascist I don't really complain.

[-] Klear@quokk.au 26 points 2 days ago

Avoiding topics isn't self-censorship. It's when you curtail your own expression, so stuff like f*#@ or even euphemisms like "heck".

OP was probably referring to the annoying trend of memes with censored words like "sex" or "kill".

These get posted all the time, but at least there's always a couple people calling out OP for being lazy.

[-] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

I kinda feel the opposite.

Self censorship is when you refrain from engaging in certain topics, not when you do blatantly obvious word replacement. Censorship is about preventing the dissemination of ideas, not the dissemination of words.

Ya wtf is up with eevery Meme sublemmy just being politics? That shit should STAY in a politics sublemmy. I don't go to Memes to be sad and angry, I go to Memes to ESCAPE and ENJOY myself.

I had such hope for Lemmy, but its just a cesspool of hateful extremists with a handful of people trying to genuinely enjoy themselves.

[-] Fredthefishlord 5 points 2 days ago

Because it's primarily people who care about politics and their personal choice in regards to politics in regards to corps that caused them to join lemmy, predisposing lemmy to politics

[-] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

Lemmy is where smug leftists go to see which one of them can outrage the most people.

Ignoring politics doesn't make them go away. You're only making your life worse for yourself if you're not saying on top of the latest political news and not voting in every election.

[-] AceOnTrack 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I use Lemmy in the same way I used Reddit back in the day: a time waster at work.

I don't need to be reminded that life is shit while I'm at work. I know that, I'm at fucking work!

I get enough political bullshit outside of Reddit/Lemmy, thanks.

[-] prole 1 points 1 day ago

Then this isn't the site for you.

Lemmy is no different than any other social media platform that thrives on hate

💯Lemmy is dominated by leftist extremists and insufferable Linux advocates. Then there’s a large section of the mentally unwell. And a whole category of communities filled with automated copies of Reddit posts and zero comments.

Happy healthy well adjusted and successful people are not Lemmy. It’s mostly the lunatic fringe.

The modding of communities into echo chambers is more extreme than on Reddit even. Productive political debate is impossible here.

[-] starelfsc2@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'm pretty happy but not that healthy from a chronic illness so maybe you have a point.

Idk I've had I would say a majority good interactions on lemmy, I've definitely seen people being cringe and rude but that doesn't seem to be the norm. Maybe it's just because I qualify what I say a lot to not be misunderstood idk

Some examples:

me raising a point counter to the post and generally nice replies

friendly discussion on lemmys user numbers

Me responding slightly rudely to someone discrediting protestors

[-] prole 1 points 1 day ago

Then there’s a large section of the mentally unwell.

I'm wondering what you think makes people "unwell" here, specifically. Care you explain?

[-] Nangijala@feddit.dk 11 points 2 days ago

Honestly, my experience is that the Linux crowd are some of the most wholesome people on here, but otherwise I mostly agree with you. I was very quickly disillusioned about this platform being any better than all the social media shit I had just left behind. There are still good people and instances here and I hold on to the ones I have found, but the rest of my Lemmy experience has been very disappointing.

[-] GoldAxolotl@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Well, in some of your comments here you've very nicely formulated conclusions about Lemmy, which are, i think, spinning constantly in many Lemmy users' heads — there are indeed many cons presented on platform. Not only because people, while moving on "another platform", usually forgot to also adapt their behaviour to some new platform, but they moreover bring with them loads of bs that is acceptable on other platforms mainly because of the way they operate. However, some people do it on purpose — to make all possible places as shitty as possible (they kinda build their own image). Another thing is Lemmy's technical limitations — it's not a big corporation making money on selling sensitive user data to ad providers and brokers. So, yes, no fancy features, top-tier functions. Honestly, i have no idea about how exactly devs are running platform nor how they planning to run it in the future. Anyway, for now, i just able to accept it as it is currently presented.

It's nice that you're trying to keep your feed clean by blocking unwanted instances and/or particular communities. But there are at least a couple of hundreds of communities on fediverse, and at least ~25% are those not abandoned, actively posting. This is a real inconvenience of a platform: why not to let users just pick a bunch of communities they like from a big list and then feed will contain only posts from selected communities. C'mon, there must be some other much less painful method to let users discover new places on platform. Another major pitfall for me is that some instances and/or communities within them block access to their content for other ones. Personally, i don't think that atomisation and alienation are the points of federation. Let me also add, that Lemmy, despite it's kinda unique nature, is still an object of monitoring and tool of propaganda and manipulation. Yes, we want some big place on the internet to be exclusively for cool interesting stuff and adequate conversations, but... intelligence 👮🏽‍♂️ always steps in and does it's worst preventing any attempts of cozy cohabitation. Thou, i've seen some definitive tendencies for balance, adjustments for neutrality and compromise in terms of politics and other sensitive topics in major communities and lately there was some significant progress imo + algorithm breaching techniques were quite weak and i've seen as less unwanted content as it's possible for now. However, different parties are constantly seeking for ways to abuse platform and flood it with some total 💩 Moreover, certain countries' intelligences invest in this kinda shit very hardly, so i cannot really imagine the amount of problems everyone is dealing with in here: from developers to community owners and moderators, and to regular users. Usually, i don't scroll much of a feed and go straight to preferred communities. Yet, for me it's still quite interesting to scroll down sometimes and see if there's any unwanted content (and also what's going on with certain people's minds to be ready for bs floods). It's often presented, unfortunately. Ironically, some of this content included complaints from user, who was unable to block all unwanted instances and communities — while that user's instance turned out to be unwanted for me 🌚 leftists... some of them behave more like fascists, or nazis. Not really surprisingly, coz their brainrots are just an extremes of very similar bs, ideologies based on hostility, constant violence and repression for "sustainability".

Only small amount of non-ultra left or right people are able to communicate adequately and defend their position — they often even adequate enough not to consider themselves a part of any modern bs ideologies and so they're just individuals who had appropriated some, idk, the way they perform some little domestic things, prepare meals and so that makes them a bit "conservative" or "liberal", but they're ok, even cute sometimes. But i still get this unwanted content with agitation on "action" (terrorism really), that everything is rotted, end is near, etc. and patridiots screeching on absolutely everyone with different opinion (all 😼, can't change anything, hooked up on some copium or some other triggering for sensitive people, provocative stuff) — in their instances they usually never get banned, thus they ban everyone else, in order to make their poor dumpsers look civilised; they clean any dissidence so hard it's implied like there are some random casual conversations between absolutely normal human beings (yeah, that's exactly why they just always come to consensus in all disputes), while, of course, their communies are strictly moderated and censored as some happy gulag camps or recordings of ice camps of absolute innocence.

Agreed on many Linux users being polite.

I don't understand how these photos of a man pre and after war have anything to do with Lemmy

I think it just means, likely that the lemmy users have "seen some shit" that eventually caused them to join Lemmy instead of the horde of reddit users.

[-] judgyweevil@feddit.it 1 points 1 day ago

Idk, I think Lemmy would heal ex Reddit users from the trauma they had to endure

[-] Mothra@mander.xyz 30 points 2 days ago

It's not an amazing meme and I'm not sure I agree with it, but in my understanding it is trying to say that we, Lemmy users, are experienced and not naive unlike Reddit users.

You are probably right though

[-] thatradomguy@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

What do 4chan users look like?

Truly, I got so sick of being in constant trouble for behaving in a way that didn't matter three years ago on Reddit. Profit kills everything good.

[-] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 17 points 2 days ago

My god Lemmy users are self congratulatory.
