Miller: “The tragedy is a political party and a movement that has ripped down our statues, our monuments, our holidays, our heroes, our heritage,” Miller continued, ignoring the fact that the Trump administration has itself called for the removal of statues that do not align with its version of history.

“The Republican Party under President Trump celebrates beauty again and beautification again, and just as President Trump has beautified Washington D.C., now he’s repairing, finally, an area of the White House that has been left in disrepair for decades.”

”The tragedy is a political party and a movement that has ripped down our statues, our monuments, our holidays, our heroes, our heritage.”

White supremacy dog whistle.

Columbus was a rapist and murderer. Confederate statues were erected during Jim Crow. The "heritage" of the US is one of subjugation of non-white people (a definition that has changed multiple times).

I mean there are things in American history that are worth celebrating. But it's usually the nameless people who struggled against the ones they build statues of.

I do find the whole concept of feeling some sense of accomplishment and pride over things you personally had nothing to do with to be kind of distasteful. If you aren't living your life in a way that you can feel proud of your own actions and instead feel the need to act as if you have some ownership of things that happened before you were born then maybe that's a sign that you need to make a change.

And removing these statues and monuments and holidays, and whatever don’t deny the white nationalist and racist past of our country. It just means that we no longer choose to celebrate it.

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 week ago

Funny you mention Columbus. Remember when Italians weren't white enough to be a part of that club? Even Irish weren't white enough.

[-] stringere@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 week ago

non-white people (a definition that has changed multiple times

Yeah, even the wops and micks weren't considered white for a while. There's always been someone else to blame for your situation in the US.

If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.

OK, do you have literally any argument for tearing down a section of the White House?

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 21 points 1 week ago

No, but also look at this made up culture war problem.

Keeping things as they were will suddenly become woke, mmw. Even though they like to call themselves conservatives.

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Name one other war where the losers are celebrated as much as the First American Civil War (may as well get used to calling it that now).

This is why, when one people conquer another people, they destroy all of their art and culture and literature and history. You give them an inch and they take a mile. They lost...they can either not accept that and keep fighting, or they can assimilate, willingly or by force if necessary. Tale as old as time. Slavery was a third "option" for lack of a better word, but not after that war.

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago

you give them an inch...

Agreed!

Fuck them.

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 34 points 1 week ago

Many of the statues and monuments weren't historical. They were built by racist orgs still trying to hold on to hope for the confederacy. Which also lasted such a short time that its existence is negligible as a source of historical significance. Also, if you are that invested in art and culture, maybe be an artist instead of being a complete tool?

[-] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 7 points 1 week ago

He's not that good an artist, better kill all the ~~Jews~~ Palestinians

[-] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 week ago

I wonder if there is a statistically significant inverse correlation between artistic ability and despotic actions.

It's plausible enough that your generalized rule might be legit.

[-] stringere@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

In my experience with people who claim the title 'artist' it seems a fair amount of them are arrogant and some border or were full on narcissists. This is not to be confused with artists I have known. I am addressing specifically those who go about claiming 'artist' as an identity and wielding it like a club as if calling themselves that qualifies them to be a general pest to be around.

I can understand the prevalence of these traits in 'artists' because it does take some extreme self confidence or arrogance to believe you have a unique vision that can change the world through your chosen medium. So maybe there is something to that. Frustrated that their self perceived genius is unrecognized and their talent unappreciated and not bring able to persuade others to their vision, they turn to forcing their viewpoint on others.

Just rambling, pay me no mind.

Racism is the culture they want to celebrate.

[-] southpaw84@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago

Was this the Union’s grave mistake that they allowed them to continue to live here? To enjoy the freedoms we hold dear and to share our nation with them despite their abhorrent beliefs? They will not allow us the same fate if they find themselves in a similar position.

That’s the difference between us and them.

And for this fucking monster to speak in half-truths without showing his full true self (but we all know). This is not a dog whistle so mush as a bullhorn.

Hitler waited in the wings too, right?

It increasingly seems to me that, ironically enough, the only way for tolerance to exist is for it not to allow intolerance to continue to exist.

[-] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago
[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 23 points 1 week ago

Tolerance is not a moral choice but a social contract.

The intolerant have broken that social contract and therefore are not entitled to its benefits.

Punch a Nazi.

The only thing I don’t like about it is that Paul Rueben’s doesn’t deserve the association

Stephen Miller is a whiny little bitch that uses a fake name, Stefan Enzio Muller. And I’m pretty sure I, a 5’4” woman who doesn’t exercise, could beat him up.

I challenged him to a fist fight. If he loses, he has to move to Venezuela. He didn’t respond to my challenge.

[-] wavebeam@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

What a coward

[-] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago

He doesn’t need to put up a defence, they already did it. The fascists are laughing at you, Americans.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Polling shows that just 33 percent of U.S. adults approve of Trump’s changes. That number drops to 24 percent when specifically asked about the demolition of the East Wing.

I bet this is the same sort of people - in some instances, maybe the exact same people, literally - that supported Nixon even after he got on the helicopter and flew away in utter shame.

I mean....who the fuck would support this? No one asked for this and the pedo-in-chief didn't get permission from anyone.

[-] stringere@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

I'm hoping the construction crew lose all licenses they may have. Whoever has been dping the work absolutely does not have the permits necessary for demolition or any of the new construction.

I love that the US is being sued and there is a request for an immediate stop to all work while the legalities are established. I'm surprised there isn't a lawsuit from an historical preservation society of one kind or another.

[-] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago

Don’t you just want to punch that little bitch Nazi in his whiney little mouth?

[-] Microtonal_Banana@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago

By "our" he doesn't mean all the US citizen. Only the Nazi ones.
