I’d like to thank my back and knees for being there for me when I needed them.

Thank you for the unsolicited pictures of your wood.

I think you got short changed on that cord. 4'x4'x8' is a cord of wood, and that looks like far less that

It’s in about a 10’ space and doesn’t include some logs I split for kindling

Maybe he is only showing part of the good stuff for the sake of opsec.

Face cord is a much more common measure for firewood in many locales.

I hope that’s a storage area and not the house. Word of caution don’t stack wood close to the house as it invites bugs to the home. (Termites and carpenter ants especially.)

You may have done it right, but I’d rather warn and help then just move on.

I appreciate the warning, and learned that lesson a couple years ago.

This is on a concrete pad that used to have a hot tub, surrounded by pressure treated wood and about 20’ from the house, and it was okay last year.

Glad to hear you’ve got it in a good spot. Sorry you did have to learn that lesson the hard way.

Oh man, reading stuff like that I can't appreciate enough that my house, the most expensive thing I have or will spend money on in my entire life isn't made of a material that would succumb to a few months of unchecked exposure to a handful of insects.

Seriously. The possibility alone would leave me terribly nervous.

There are insects that burrow into concrete type materials too. If you have drywall or wood trim or food in your house, there’s a critter that can come visit you. Nature gonna nature. We’re all worm food eventually.

I got a logging truck load last year and cut it all to size and split it all over the winter.

Way better then a gym membership.

I wish I could do this every day. I used to have about five acres to maintain, along with pigs and chickens, and I was in the best health of my life, physically and mentally.

Gyms don’t give me the satisfaction of a grueling task that can be completed.

I got chickens a couple weeks ago and I’d love to get a couple pigs in the spring because pigs have the best meat.

Pork chops, ham and bacon from one animal?

[-] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

Not to mention filled to the brim with lard.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Yeah, my heirloom pigs had thick lard layers. Kept me in deep frying grease for a year.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

If you do get pigs seek out an heirloom breed. I had Berkshires and not only could I sell the meat at a premium, it was so tender and marbled it was like making ham out of veal.

That sounds fantastic.

I’ll have to look into it.

Let's all hope they'll be there for you tomorrow.

More of an experience we all will have. Back and knees are notorious for being whiny little bitches long before someone actually gives up on doing physical things.

(if you want to prolong it as far as possible, exercise and stretch before you're climbing up hill to regain normal levels of mobility!)

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I started this yesterday and this morning my back was tight.

I made a ham and egg breakfast burrito, took 800mg of ibuprofen and 35mg prednisone and got in a rhythm with t.

I only really feel bad if I stop moving too much.

[-] MotoAsh@piefed.social 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yep! Keep at it. As long as you're not over-stressing things on a continual basis, it DOES get better with consistent exercise/stretching.

Also the continue moving thing is very wise to notice: keep at it, or your body WILL find a way to be a lazy fuck.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Only problem is I won’t have another cord to move tomorrow.

How did you split them? By hand or did you use a splitter?

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

It was mostly split when I got it, but I split a few of the smaller, drier logs for kindling by hand.

I’ve got this great maul that’s basically a solid steel wedge welded to the end of a driveshaft.

[-] crank0271@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Ah, nice. A splitter fit for a caveman (or your avatar, I suppose).

That looks like a face cord aka 1/3 of a cord.

A cord is 4 ft tall, 8 ft wide, and 4 ft deep.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

This is about 4.5’ tall, 3’ wide, and 8’ long with a slope out to 10’, minus five or six logs I split down for kindling.

Maybe a bit less than a cord but I neglected a banana for scale.
