The tl;dr of events:

  • Dude was gifted some cases of beer from his boss.
  • Took a swig from a can, and died a few days later.
  • Turns out boss was part of international drug ring.
  • They got the cans mixed with legit cans of beer, they would process the ones with meth and give away the rest.
  • Boss accidentally gave away one of the meth cans

Slightly more info:

  • He gave a can to his buddy at the same time, buddy's can was fine. He tasted the tainted can and spit the sip out right away.

  • The boss had a warehouse with a bunch of cans where they'd process the drugs and such. They had footage of him there which is how they caught him and figured things out.

There's a lot more to the whole thing, but he didn't just buy laced beer from the store... if that makes things any better/worse

The fuck that owns the super market should be tossed into the sea.

[-] non_burglar@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

He was tossed into the clink for 21 years.

The boss who gifted the beer was given 21, the market owner got 22, still doesn’t bring the poor guy back.

Shitty misleading title as usual these days.

What's misleading about it?

The product came from Canada.

The "beer" is in quotation marks, indicating that it wasn't actually beer.

A 21-year-old was killed.

In New Zealand.

It says Canadian beer killed him. The contents which were not beer is what killed him. Should have said something like drugs killed teen that were smuggled and stored in a Canadian beer can.

Further, 'Molson Canadian' is a brand of beer, usually referred to as 'Canadian', leading to more confusion.

No, it says Canadian "beer" killed him. It's an immediate signal that it wasn't actually beer.

This is so insidious i think the penalty should be a lethal injection of this shit.

Imagine having a full on engineering and chemistry team that makes it ships it then processes it into crystal meth to be sold overseas and domestic. They have an entire process from raw materials to crystal meth…

[-] DonkMagnum@lemy.lol 4 points 2 weeks ago

The Cartels invented that process after our "war on drugs" made it impossible to get pseudo-ephedrine over the counter in drug stores, which was a key ingredient in good ol' fashioned biker meth. Biker meth wasn't a nice drug, but it was afternoon tea compared to the new production methods. The new stuff is much more addictive and it causes permanent changes in the brain. You can get off new meth, but you are never the same... this is a key ingredient in the increasing levels of violence and psychosis amongst street addicts.

It's crazy for sure. The logistics are neat. Crazy that all that work is cheaper than the domestic production. I've always wondered if the "liquid meth"is the finished product with liquid added or if it's one of the intermediate steps and still needs to be precipitated and washed before sale.

NZ is especially attractive for the cartels and big dealers.

In Mexico, meth costs about $500 a kilogram. In Canada that same amount sells for $10,000, while in New Zealand one kilogram sells for almost $300,000.
