Wow, I can't wrap my head around hitting someone with a car and then berating them before driving away. Psychopathic shit. I hope they catch him.

[-] DrCake@lemmy.world 76 points 2 weeks ago

She didn’t even “come out of nowhere” looks like the driver should have seen her crossing with enough time. That’s assuming he even looked up from his phone

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 54 points 2 weeks ago

When I was 5, a motorcycle run into me on the sidewalk making me do like a 720 spin while they crashed like 20 meters later. They immediately got up and started cursing at me before they took off when a Kiosk attendant got out. These people have no shame.

[-] buffing_lecturer@leminal.space 28 points 2 weeks ago

I think his behaviour sort of makes sense if you consider how scary it could be for him (bear with me).

He's clearly in the wrong. He knows it. Especially in the court of public opinion; he hit a kid, walking to school. It's broad daylight and it happened at a crosswalk. It's not looking good.

Surely, then, it can't be his fault. Taking responsibility is not an option, it doesn't even cross his mind. If he lashes out, if he berates the person he hit for doing something wrong, maybe he can convince himself it wasn't his fault. Maybe he can convince the girl or the bystanders that it wasn't his fault.

I think this is also why people can be so opposed to bike lanes or other infrastructure that promotes mixed use of roads. When most things are built with only cars in mind, it's easier to blame a pedestrian or cyclist because they seem to be guests in a space for cars.

This guy should have his driving licence revoked.

[-] RenLinwood 56 points 2 weeks ago

He should have his legs revoked

[-] maximumbird@lemmy.world 37 points 2 weeks ago

He should have his ass kicked

Then his license revoked

I thought Canadians were supposed to be nice?!

[-] lengau@midwest.social 26 points 2 weeks ago

It's Alberta.

[-] Soup@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

Albertans are, by and large, our shittiest people. Like, I know some nice people from there but they’re rare and I only know them because they left. They’re loud, obnoxious, stupid as hell, and the only thing really have is oil so they’ve made it, and cosplaying being country, their entire personality.

Fuck Alberta.

american immigrant. probably

[-] Bo7a@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago

Nah. It says Alberta right in the headline. No need for looking elsewhere.

[-] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 101 points 2 weeks ago

Notice how when she gets hit she falls over the hood, does a little spin, and ends up sitting on the ground? It doesn't even look like her head hit the ground. That sucks.

But if this was any modern truck or SUV, and not a minivan, she might be straight dead. There's no rolling over the hood of one of those, it's just grill into face, back of skull into ground, and if you're really lucky it doesn't roll over top of you afterwards.

[-] varnia 85 points 2 weeks ago

This is so surreal: She just gets up and keeps walking, while the driver - who was either drunk or just distracted - tries to blame her for the whole thing.

I would like to see a followup on this story where the driver faces legal consequences.

[-] matti@sopuli.xyz 50 points 2 weeks ago

I was hit by a car from behind in my early twenties. I sprung up after the impact to look for the person I was walking with. I had a few scrapes and a deeper cut in my arm but nothing that I even noticed for a few minutes. The next day is when that kind of impact gets you. For weeks after, taking an elevator or riding a bus would hurt. It took months to take any running steps. I feel really bad for this girl, it's a big deal even if she's walked it off at the time.

No one seems to be aware that the GODDAMN car does not have right of way in a crosswalk.

[-] Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de 67 points 2 weeks ago

Fuckers like this should not be allowed to drive a vehicle. I am betting he was on his phone. That is only way I can explain why he didn't notice her until the last second.

[-] jimmux@programming.dev 10 points 2 weeks ago

I've seen drivers look me right in the eyes and still pull into my bike lane. Some drivers just don't register anything smaller than a car.

That girl is limping, I hope she went to the get it check out. Poor thing, just mining her own business to get berated and traumatized by some prick.

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 27 points 2 weeks ago

Article mentioned it's minor injuries, but seeing how she get flung off by the car it's definitely not just bruise, but probably nothing permanent.

[-] Eddbopkins@lemmy.world 52 points 2 weeks ago

Omg that is insane that she just gets up and walks away. I see back and spinal, injuries, injuries on both legs. And possible damage to both arms. This guy needs his license revoked for life and this girl needs medical attention immediately.

[-] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago

From the article:

Police said they were dispatched on Oct. 2 at approximately 8:38 a.m. to assist EMS with an injured teenager in the area of Windhaven Gate and Windstone Road in southwest Airdrie.

Upon arrival, it was determined the teen had been crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a white Dodge Caravan, RCMP wrote in a release.

The 17-year-old sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision.

Police said the driver fled the scene, driving eastbound toward 8 Street.

So it sounds like she got medical attention pretty quickly and her injuries were minor, thankfully. Which is pretty remarkable with how fast the driver was going and how she went flying. But good news for the poor kid. I hope she gets a follow-up though, because sometimes injuries from these things can take hours or days to manifest.

Like you, I hope they catch the driver and he gets his license revoked, and also some charges brought against him. His driving was irresponsible, and leaving the scene after hitting someone is a really shitty move.

I know others were positing that because there's no audio maybe he was freaked out and upset that she got up and started walking away. But even in that situation who the fuck acts that way?! Maybe, just maybe... She was walking away to get out of the crosswalk and away from the lunatic who just ran her over. It sounds at least equally reasonable that as she is a teenager girl and got hit by an older male driver so he might fear for her safety and wanted to say least get clear of the vehicle and further danger.

[-] Tonava@sopuli.xyz 10 points 2 weeks ago

I hope she gets a follow-up though, because sometimes injuries from these things can take hours or days to manifest.

This 100%. There's way too many cases of brain and neck injuries that are only noticed much later on, and then the insurance companies will deny they could have occured because of the crash that caused them, leaving people permanently injured and fighting for compensation for years

[-] critical@reddthat.com 50 points 2 weeks ago

And this is why we should have 30 km/h speed limits.

[-] errer@lemmy.world 19 points 2 weeks ago

Looking at the video he does appear to be going that speed or less. Probably why she isn’t dead.

[-] apprehensively_human@lemmy.ca 24 points 2 weeks ago

Which is exactly why we should have 30 km/h speed limits. The difference in survivability is massive at lower speeds.

[-] SaraTonin@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

On a course i was once given the statistic that at 30mph 90% of pedestrians die, and at 20mph 90% live.

Now consider (from the same course) that breaking isn’t linear and most stopping happens at the end. So if you’re going 30 and would stop at point x during an emergency stop, then if you start an emergency stop at the same point while doing 40 you’ll reach point x doing 30.

Yeah. I don’t speed, especially in areas with pedestrians.

This kind of situation is probably not that rare. I know a guy who got rear ended at a red light by a minivan while on his bike. Broke both of his legs. While he's howling in pain on the ground the woman who hit him gets out, stands over him for a second, gets back in the car, and drives away leaving him there to wait for other aid. She never got caught. He guessed that she got out to help, saw how badly she had maimed him, and decided to flee instead.

[-] Sweeetie_Feeties@lemmy.today 29 points 2 weeks ago

This guy needs charges and the poor girl needs to get checked out medically.

[-] SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works 24 points 2 weeks ago

Fuck sakes Alberta

[-] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 23 points 2 weeks ago

If that was my kid, Murder was the case that they gave me.

[-] jason@discuss.online 21 points 2 weeks ago

A kid got hit on his bike in my community recently. I'm not sure of the outcome. What is the town doing about it? The local police are stopping kids and giving them fines for not wearing helmets...

[-] stevedice@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 weeks ago

Just a couple of days ago I had to bang on the hood of a car to get the driver to notice me. I swear to god they get stupider and even more entitled every day.

[-] jimmux@programming.dev 4 points 2 weeks ago

I've done that too many times.

Why is it always Alberta seeing the USA as a role model when it comes to behaviour and mentality?

[-] Tinidril@midwest.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

If this were the US, then there would have been at least one gun involved.

Bon Jovi have a verse that starts with the correct medicine for this gentleman. Neck should also do the trick.

[-] Phil_in_here@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago

I'll play devils advocate here. We have no audio and no testimony from the victim or witnesses in the article. He only exits the van when she walks away.

He could have been unjustifiably distracted, hit the girl, was collecting himself to get out of the van, and then she just walked away. So he gets out and says, "what the hell, you can't just walk away from something like that. We need to call an ambulance or get you to a hospital or something" and her, being a teenager who would rather not engage at all would brush it off with "no, I'm fine, fuck off".

What do you do? You can't detain the girl. So she leaves and what? You call the cops and say "I fucked up and hit someone with my van." Who does that help? Now shes lost in the crowd. You can't just stay there, so you drive away. What else is there to do?

He's 100% guilty of hitting a pedestrian who was plainly walking in a clearly marked crosswalk where it is likely busy with other highschool students as there are clearly others in the video. Don't get me wrong, fuck that guy. We can fairly judge him on that account. And that verbal interaction absolutely could have been him victim blaming, but that is conjecture. I'd believe any first hand witness over him, and pretty much any secondhand retelling from someone a witness spoke to. But we have no evidence whatsoever about what was said.

That's a ragebait title.

[-] TheDudeV2@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 weeks ago

Even if every charitable assumption you've made is correct, you and every reasonable person knows exactly what he should have done.

You said it yourself. You man up, you call the cops, you tell them “I fucked up and hit someone with my van”, and that there is a human being that needs help. That's it. That's what you do. That's what every single person should have done.

It seems to me you're trying to engage in healthy dialogue, but "That's a ragebait title" is just not true; the headline does, in fact, summarize events rather well.

The adult, the driver of the car, that hit and injured another human, let alone a kid, bears 100% of blame and took none of the responsibility.

Anyone else find it odd someone just happened to be recording this on a handheld device?

Edit: a less sleep-deprived user has pointed out this is probably CCTV recorded on a cell phone. Get your rest, friends.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 38 points 2 weeks ago

Suspect it's somebody filming their CCTV screen from a handheld device.

[-] Throbbing_banjo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 weeks ago

Holy shit I need to sleep 🤣

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 13 points 2 weeks ago

CCTV probably

[-] Valmond@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, all the conspiracionists.

[-] RenLinwood 7 points 2 weeks ago

Not really, everyone carries a camera with them at all times and a bunch of folks have one or more mounted on their cars

[-] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Alberta

Mostly filling with redneck refugees from the south, looking for oil, avoiding the IRS and spreading their sickness to the rest of Canada. Like 'Murican entitlement such as not caring about pedestrians.
