Could someone remind me what version and how long a journey this has been?

[-] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 57 points 5 days ago

A long time. Over 14 years. It was Beta 1.7.3.

[-] veeesix@lemmy.ca 26 points 5 days ago

He’s been playing 1.7.3 for 14 years??

[-] DesolateMood@lemmy.zip 44 points 5 days ago

Nope. He's been playing beta 1.7.3

[-] Allero@lemmy.today 36 points 5 days ago

Which is, to clarify, before Minecraft 1.0.0

[-] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 28 points 5 days ago

Apparently, yes. According to some randoms on the internet, he's been doing it pretty casually. He brought his Minecraft wolf as well.

[-] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 33 points 5 days ago

Holy shit he finally made it. I had forgotten about him!

[-] SCmSTR 9 points 5 days ago

Holy fuck he actually did it?!

[-] Gold_E_Lox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 6 days ago

wat, i really didnt think it was possible

[-] Allero@lemmy.today 12 points 5 days ago

It...takes a while. Also, modern versions don't have this.

[-] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

That's just 2.5 km per day. He was definitely taking his time.

is his game running like crap because of the game not handling being that far out?

I tried to watch the latest vid and it made me nauseous.

[-] OhioComrade@lemmy.ml 15 points 5 days ago

Basically his coordinates have become so big that the game has trouble of aligning physical location to the actual blocks. You'll see this when he hovers over a block the overlay no longer matches where the block actually is, it's like half a block off.

[-] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 6 points 5 days ago

the game does get glitchy when in the far lands. at least it does in the videos I've seen in the past

[-] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 days ago

I'm going to guess it's either lots of lightning updates, precision loss or spawning lots of mobs. If you mean prior to rendering the far lands, then the second one.

[-] GerardsGuitar@retrolemmy.com 11 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Heck yeah! Can't imagine how long that must have taken!

[-] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 37 points 5 days ago

Over 14 years for him, because he didn't speedrun it. But he was the first one to start though!

I think his channel was the first I ever subscribed to in YouTube. What a nostalgia hit.

Not sure how this is news, because this was already done many times before:

https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_Far_Lands/Infdev_20100327_to_Beta_1.7.3

On July 8, 2015 RetroApo became the first player to reach the Edge Far Lands through legitimate means in vanilla Minecraft, traveling through the Nether.

I also want to note that the underlying bug was fixed over 14 years ago.

[-] ashleythorne@lemmy.world 23 points 5 days ago

kurtjmac was one of the first (I'm not sure if the first) to start the journey. His journey is notable because he did not use the nether or any glitches and built up a community over those 14 years.

His journey is notable because he did not use the nether or any glitches

On June 19, 2020, at 12:08:57 UTC, KilloCrazyMan became the first player to reach the Edge Far Lands through legitimate means without going to the Nether after 9 months of beginning his journey. He was followed by Eckwall on January 20, 2021.

built up a community over those 14 years.

Never heard of him until reading this post... I also couldn't find a video on his channel where he showcases that he reached them yet...

First transatlantic flight a success!

Critic says, "Not sure how this is news, Christopher Columbus got there on a boat half a millenia ago."

A person just accomplished a long time goal for a good cause and your first response was to dismiss the effort. Must be drowning in party invitations to be so sour.

[-] SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago

I remember hearing about this when he first started. Good for him!

[-] Agent641@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Is this like, the end of the Minecraft world?

[-] Wrufieotnak@feddit.org 40 points 5 days ago

Yes and no. It is the end of the normally generated and functioning Minecraft world. Afterwards there is still something, as can be seen, but the generated terrain is scrambled and fucked up, because its X and Y coordinates are outside the expected range. Because normally no one will reach it with normal play.

[-] Khrux@ttrpg.network 27 points 5 days ago

Also worth adding it sadly doesn't really exist anymore, the iconic look here is gone, although game mechanics still begin getting weird.

Also although people have teleported to it, Minecraft is so big that I assumed nobody would ever reach it in survival. I'm not surprised it took 14 years.

[-] Agent641@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Is it circular around the spawn, or square?

Did this guy know it would take him so long?

Why did he do it?

[-] JustARegularNerd@aussie.zone 12 points 5 days ago

It is square around the world origin

He sped up his pace in the last few months, but I remember estimates when he was doing it episodically (instead of live streaming) being in the ballpark of 34 years.

I personally don't know (someone else may be able to enlighten), but he does a fundraiser (FLoB-a-thon) to raise money for causes he believes in as part of this series.
