it's supposed to connect 'steam' with 'extremism' instead of something like Twitter, Truth, or Fox to coincide with their recent 'fact finding mission'

[-] thallamabond@lemmy.world 100 points 3 weeks ago

Absolutely, here is RFK on Sept 10 saying they cause mass shootings. (Completely ignoring the ENTIRE WORLD OUTSIDE THE US)

https://www.newsweek.com/rfk-video-games-mass-shootings-gun-violence-2127808

Also Congress has called for the leaders of discord, steam, Reddit and twitch to come and testify about extremism.

https://www.engadget.com/social-media/house-committee-asks-discord-valve-twitch-and-reddit-to-testify-on-online-radicalization-184100470.html

I don't see any of the social media heads who donated to Trump's inaugural on that list.

[-] yetAnotherUser@discuss.tchncs.de 24 points 3 weeks ago

Steam is very much connected to extremism. Far right extremisn to be precise.

Take a look at any Steam forum and you'll see. The reason is because Valve hardly ever hires moderators and delegates responsibility to the developer who created the game the forum is about.

I think German speaking Steam has a total of two global (i.e. paid by Valve) moderators? Not sure where I've heard this though.

[-] somewhatsanguine@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 weeks ago

This actually true, even though I swear it didn’t used to be like that. There are sooo many far right people on the forums and in the discussions. I was looking up a game where one of the female characters has the option to date her female friend. I went to the discussion tab to see if anyone knew what choices you had to pick to unlock it. A whole bunch of trolls calling the game “woke” and disgusting for hating an OPTIONAL story arc. Even on games like Life is Strange, which isn’t a new game and is pretty well known for having lgbtq elements, tons of far right people gay-bashing in the discussions tab.

I wish we lived in a time before videogames when there were no political assassinations or mass shootings.

/s <-- do I even need this?

I bet he played violent video games, like Among Us

[-] SoupBrick@pawb.social 36 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

"It is a cruel, evil game that teaches decit and murder. That is why I don't let you play Clue, son."

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 65 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Because it's saying "leftists play video games, rightists play and watch sports" without saying it. Same with the "serially online" thing.

[-] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 44 points 3 weeks ago

Lol, just check out WoWs general chat to find as many right wingers as you want.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Yeah but that's not the perception uh people that think they're offline rightists have.

Would love some MAGA to say this to me. Then I whip their ass in any game or sport they want to play. Gravy Seals can get balled on.

[-] chisel@piefed.social 62 points 3 weeks ago

I see. Video games cause violence. Guns had nothing to do with it. Mandatory id, facial scanning, and government reporting on all video game platforms is totally cool and justified. /s

[-] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago

You see, guns in video games, where nobody is hurt, are bad. Guns in reality are good.

It's a bad example, the gun in this case was good. Would have been great if just aimed 15 cm higher.

and a gobsmacking negative review of Sea of Thieves despite that 2,000 hours of playtime.

Oh damn, he's one of those people... Sounds like the worst charge so far

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 weeks ago

I am more concerned that he logged like 3 work weeks worth of time playing "power washing simulator"

[-] merdaverse@lemmy.zip 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

People under capitalism are so alienated from their work that they escape to something as mundane as Power Washing Simulator. Having a stable job with a modicum of satisfaction and control is a power fantasy nowadays.

I am telling you that there is proof video games effect people. Ever notice how most people born in the 80s grew up and all became plumbers? I mean sure all the competition has driven costs down for all of us and with just a little work you can find a plumber that will do the work for free, but a lot of these plumbers can no longer support their families and are forced to live in sewers and fight turtles for food.

[-] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

there is proof video games effect people

Holy shit they can give birth now?

[-] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 18 points 3 weeks ago

The trick to using effect/affect is to use them interchangeably and at random, then you're bound to be right sometime. Or panic and use "impact" instead, like a coward.

affect.

You affect things. Things have an effect.

Jesus Christ, if true, what the holy incompetence.

Nothing incompetent about it. Just evil this time.

They want a profile of the guy. They want to sell him as a left-wing extremist. They'll outright lie about it if they have to--they mostly have already--but lies work better when they're based on some level of truth.

[-] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 30 points 3 weeks ago

His Steam profile has over 100 "Mind Blown!" Awards lmao

You can look up the tweet from the article to get the link to the Steam profile

To me what's stupid is that they found nothing, as most of us would have expected going through a steam account, and yet they are "leaking" this information and what kind of bullshit narrative are they trying to push this time.

Trying to back up RFK's bullshit, disproven games caused mass shootings BS?

[-] selkiesidhe@sh.itjust.works 26 points 3 weeks ago

The fuckheads in office are searching for stuff they can blame. It's couldn't possibly because he was a right wing nutjob. Oh no it must be video games! Time to start cracking down on that now!

Dumb fucks...

The evangelicals supporting trump are responsible for the recent mastercard debacle to remove steam games. I wouldn't be surprised if they start into a new wave "video games cause violence" bullshit.

Also I thought the kid seemed fairly normal but him being a SoT sicko makes me wonder.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 17 points 3 weeks ago

Criminally insane.

They’re trying to obtain chat logs and communications across any channels. Each game’s developer is probably going to get a subpoena to hand them over.

This isn’t surprising or stupid.

It's supposed to paint the "Games turn people violent" narrative, nothing else.
This dude could have 2000 hours on Animal Crossing and they'd still find a way

[-] Revan343@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I don't know that 2000 hours in sea of thieves means he's incompetent; sure the game can be finished faster but maybe he just really likes it

[-] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

That’s because 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who was charged earlier this week with murdering Kirk at a speaking event last week, reportedly used Donald Trump’s name as an alias on the Valve-owned gaming storefront at one point. Sources told Bloomberg the reference to the president is what led to the Secret Service’s involvement despite the Homeland Security agency having no role in protecting Kirk at the time of the assassination.

1.) If you didn’t vote in '22 or '24 and legally had the ability to do so, you’re not a Liberal or Progress, full stop.

2.) No Liberal or Progressive would want to be associated with Trump, even ironically for the “lols”.
